No sunrise again this morning.
I stay in bed until 7.
I linger over coffee, and am slow to do my barn chores.
Not that the lingering and easiness is bad, just that without the sunrise, I'm never quite sure when my day is supposed to begin, or how to just *go.* It's terribly disorienting.

Ralph Johnson's design for this Perkins+Will tower took a genuinely clever idea and built an entire facade around it: the staccato rhythm of these protruding balconies on the south face is meant to echo the flow of highway traffic passing nearby, each one offset just enough from its neighbors that the whole grid reads as motion rather than repetition. Completed in 2010 across 46 stories and 714 units, the building earned an AIA Chicago Distinguished Building Award for exactly this kind of thinking, ornament that's actually doing conceptual work rather than just decorating a box.
Converting to black and white strips away whatever color story the glass and cladding might otherwise tell and puts all the attention on pattern instead: rows of glass-railed balconies jutting out in a syncopated rhythm, some flush with their neighbors, others staggered a beat off, creating a visual stutter across the whole facade that's the whole point of the design. A rooftop terrace runs along the top, its own railing catching the same monochrome treatment as everything below it.
To the left, an older tower with a pinnacled crown holds down the edge of the frame, giving the staccato balconies something classical and static to play against.
