Guernica is situated a half hour’s train ride away from Bilbao. It is most famous for the bombing that it suffered in 1937, in which it was almost completely destroyed by the Nazi Luftwaffe. This was the first attack targeted specifically against civilians in military history. Since that day, Guernica has become a symbol for peace, in the hope that such an atrocity might never be repeated.

The Museo de Bellas Artes presents a great alternative day out for those rainy Bilbao afternoons. Its works range from the Renaissance to the modern, and are all breathtaking,

"Each of the sculptures of Alejandro Colunga depicts a magician transforming himself into a sofa or chair, and everyone is welcome to sit on these fantastic creations. Depending upon which piece a person rests, he might feel tall or short, fat or thin. But he always feels embraced by the benevolent spirit of the magician. These renderings of the human form stretched to impossible proportions are a series of visual puns that anyone can appreciate, whatever their level of artistic sophistication." [source]
