Our Spanish students visit Guernica/Gernika by Instituto Hemingway Spanish School Bilbao

Guernica is situated a half hour’s train ride away from Bilbao. It is most famous for the bombing that it suffered in 1937, in which it was almost completely destroyed by the Nazi Luftwaffe. This was the first attack targeted specifically against civilians in military history. Since that day, Guernica has become a symbol for peace, in the hope that such an atrocity might never be repeated.

 

Guernica es un pueblo que está situado en la provincia de Vizcaya, en la comunidad autónoma del País Vasco, que fue bombardeada y destruida completamente por las fuerzas nazis (Luftwaffe) el 26 de abril 1937. Este fue el primer bombardeo selectivo contra la población civil realizado en la historia de los militares. Desde entonces Guernica se ha transformado en un símbolo de la paz, y se espera que nunca se repita tal atrocidad.
