"The Karen people have been using shifting cultivation for growing rice for more than 100 years to live in harmony with their forest. Students are helping harvest rice (a process that takes 1-2 weeks) while chatting in Thai to learn about farming techniques and the culture that exists around the rice harvest."

In order to go abroad you need a passport and in most cases a visa. "These are your responsibilities," Berry said.

Students must also remember to check their American mindsets when they get their visa stamped. They must understand the cultural mores in their host country.

"If you're in a conservative Arab-speaking country," Berry said, "don't walk around like a hoochie-mama. Use your common sense. Represent Northeastern well."

Four political science internships are available for students who want to help represent in foreign governments: in Dublin with the Irish Parliament, in Leuven (Belgium) with the European Union Parliament, in London with British Parliament, and in Canberra with the Australian Parliament.

"Even though these are political science focused -- like, working with the government -- they are open to all majors," Berry said. "For example, if you focus on woman's issues, they'll work with you to put you with someone to help you further that goal."

Experiential research with a hands-on humanitarian focus is available, too. This includes a placement in Ho Chi Minh City, in Vietnam.

Also new this year is a faculty-led "dialogue" program, which entails earning class credits, in Cuba and in India.

"After a 2-hour drive south from Chennai I arrived in Kancheepuram, an ancient Indian city steeped in Hindu tradition. The city is home to countless Hindu temples, and this photo was taken at the 1200-year-old Kailasanatha Temple. I was shown by one of the old resident Hindu priests how to “sit” properly, though he seemed to be much more limber than I. Somehow I still got my legs into that pretzel--the problem was getting them out!"

Students and faculty traveled to Ethiopia over spring break for a blend of cultural and academic experiences in the East African nation. There, they visited historic locations and met with high-level officials at the U.S. Embassy, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Oxfam, and the African Union.

Choosing the right luggage to take is key for packing for study abroad and traveling once you arrive.

For the nine students who made the 21-day trip in January 2017, the scarcity and simplicity of life in Cuba – from the 1950s cars to the empty supermarket shelves to the limited Internet service - challenged every convention of their lives back home.

The study abroad trip combined two classes: Journeys through Latin America: Contemporary Cuba, taught by Murillo, and Health, Culture and Elder Care in Cuba, taught by Kirby Veevers, an adjunct professor of Health Professions who specializes in palliative care, aging and long-term care.
