University Heights is a three-building complex comprised of 20 town home units. Each townhouse unit provides housing to a group of either eight female or eight male upper-class students in four double rooms.
Cambridge, MA: Harvard University - Wigglesworth Hall, a dormitory for first-year students. It was constructed in 1931.
Baker House Dormitory (Alvar Aalto; Perry, Shaw & Hepburn, 1946-1949). An excellent and early (for the US) example of the brick-modernist vocabulary turned to something subtler, suppler and more variegated than the great majority of its applications. Fans of the Aalto office will note such signature touches as the copious use of warmly-colored wood on the interior, the selection of bricks of varying depth and texture, the slight enlargement of hallways to form common areas, and a general avoidance of rectilinear bunker form. The last of these, in this case, is accomplished by bending the whole plan into a gentle snake's curve, embracing without completely capturing outdoor space and granting residents a variety of views.

15 August 2012. The white block, centre-left, is North Lodge, student accommodation run by Unite. The greenish block in the centre is De Havilland Court - which has flats let by Newlon Home Ownership. On the right is part of Emily Bowes Court - also Unite student housing.

§ Aerial view of where this picture was taken from. Please note that this may not be up-to-date as building work has continued on the Hale Village site.
§ In a 2010 article, journalist Julia Kollowe described student housing as recession-proof and a "remaining goldmine".
§ Owen Hatherley thinks the "new student housing is the epitome of our privatised cities".
§ Short 2008 video of the architect Irena Bauman casting a critical eye on Unite's student housing in The Sky Plaza, Leeds.
§ Until 2013 some of these Unite Tottenham flats had a clear view of the Leaning Column of Tottenham Hale to which I awarded the status of treasured historic monument. It was demolished by building work on the new station layout.
§ Thanks to people who pointed out the two Unite links weren't working. Now corrected.
§ Updates for Google Street view aren’t always done at the same time. The result may be a road where you seem to be jumping months. In January 2013 part of Ferry Lane was like this.

Co-ed by wing, the average dorm room dimensions of Aviat Hall are 19" x 11". Dedicated in 2000 and opened for occupancy in the fall of 2001, the dorm is named for recently canonized Sr. Leonine Aviat, who, along with Fr. Brisson and Mother Chappuis, co-founded the Oblate Sisters of St. Francis DeSales.
Architects & Engineers: Arup Associates. Early 1960s.
Philip Dowson started to explore the layering of concrete structure and the building fabrics very early on in his work with Ove Arup. He continued to improve and refine this mode of design, introducing prefabrication and variety of materials to suit different locations. Particular attention was paid to the weathering of the facades. The results can now be seen in some wonderful University buildings, looking fresh and clean as ever.
Opened for occupancy in August 2008, Donahue Hall is named for Fr. Bernard F. Donahue, OSFS, distinguished professor of politics at DeSales University from 1966 through 1999.

At publicly funded campuses like Michigan State University the legislators for the state took away budget support little by little, resulting in bigger than cost-of-living increases in fees and tuition paid by in-state and out-of-state students since the early 2000s. With the federal influx of state funding, some of the state's own revenues are being returned to higher education budgets in 2022 or 2023. Whether this relief will trickle down to tuition payers or not is yet to be seen, though. At any rate as the cost of college attendance ramped up fewer applied for admission. Those attending sometimes needed food pantries to sustain themselves with free or reduced food.
This photo was taken an hour too late. On the countertop are six bottles of hand sanitizer for apartment block renters to make use of at no charge. To the right there were cans of food sitting out, free for the taking: 5 or 6 tiny cans of cocktail-sized sausages (open and ready to eat) and 2 or 3 cans of mixed vegetables. But before going to get the camera/phone from the car to record the ethnographic moment, somebody had scooped up the cans!

Dining hall; conical skylight.
Architects; Ahrends Burton Koralek, 1972.
Photo (6&7) show the main external wall from inside, exterior of this wall can be seen in the foreground of photo 1. The 45 degree concrete cantilevers behind the antiquated lamp post are the bits of chamfered concrete columns missing here and in 7. The glazing washing the wall with daylight is hidden behind the massive brick wall seen in 1.
The curved slot with a shaft of light, penetrating the pulpit/balcony like structure in the corner are being lit by another roof light hidden behind the curved brick drum seen in 1 next to the last bay of the tall brickwork and just before the staggered four storeyed window elevation starts.
This is a masterclass in the use of subtle daylight to do all the architectural leg work with simple structural means. The modern generation of architects should do well by studying ABK's work to fully grasp the poetry of daylight entering interiors.
Opportunities to get out and make new pictures are, of necessity, limited during the COVID-19 outbreak so, from 1st April 2020, I've been hunting through my archives to find images taken on the same date in previous years. I've tried to choose eight each day. They've mostly not been published here before and potentially cover the period 1980-2020. I hope you enjoy them.
Haha it is a student rental!!
