LUC was responsible for public realm and landscape design for 500 bed student housing development in the Partick area of Glasgow’s West End. LUC deployed a clear hierarchy to the design proposals creating a series of interconnecting primary and secondary spaces. The primary spaces deployed a distinctive paving pattern that was inspired by the rich textures of wheatfields, a nod to the area’s bread mill heritage.

A rear view of a fine house that was acquired by the University of Hull during the 1960s for student accommodation. Some 15 of us were shoehorned in there, most of us sharing rooms. The dormer window at the top marks the attic, shared by Charles and me in 1971/72.

It was a very exhilarating time for us all, and we had to cater for ourselves - learning the rudiments of cooking proved a handy exercise in gaining a useful life skill. I actually enjoyed preparing a simple meal as a welcome relief from the intensity of studying and essay writing.

We forged very deep and enduring friendships from our shared time in The Fuchsias. I was deeply saddened by the untimely passing of my old room-mate Charles at the age of 63. He was one of the finest and kindest people I have ever known. But I have remained in touch with other housemates. I emailed a copy of this photo a few days earlier to three friends, all of us now scattered to the winds - two of us in the United States, the others in France and Sweden. It was a delight to swap the memories. Hard to believe though that we are all in our 70s now.

Architects; Philip Dowson for Arup Associates, 1963-64.

Flickr has seen quite a few Oxford buildings recently. I feel this may be a good occasion to have another look at Dowson’s Corpus Christi College building in Cambridge which was designed well after the initial design for first building at Somerville was completed in 1957. Somerville buildings and Corpus were being built almost at the same time but experience gained from earlier designs for Somerville came very handy for Corpus detailing. The theme for these designs almost became Arup’s house style. Dowson wanted to use the concrete in this country to withstand the weathering and every attempt was made to stop the dirt from the windows to be washed on to the concrete.

Another concern at Arup’s office was to tackle the problems of psychological isolation in tall structures. Their aim of creating student communities with a sense of place without forcing them to live in monastic surroundings, explored ‘layering’ the elevations to control the dirt washing, providing privacy and also a feeling of security, avoiding vertigo producing glass elevations. The repetitive ‘peristylar structural grid’ floating in front of glazing achieves both objectives and after nearly 45 years of use the weathering is proving successful. Smithsons tried something similar, almost at the same time, with their timber framing in front of widows for living accommodation at St Hilda in Oxford with a surprisingly rustic approach.

The slender frames for both these projects are finely crafted in limestone aggregate. Somerville’s frame designed in 1957-58 for casting insitu is not as visually refined as pre-cast H frames at Corpus designed in 1962. The joints between frames at Somerville are partially hidden while at Corpus these are proudly expressed and displayed.

Wolfson Building at Somerville and Trinity Hall in Cambridge were designed in 1965 and1966 respectively and are playing with glass volumes creating bay windows surrounded by precast beams or frame.

Architects: Stephen Hodder, 2005.

Stephen Hodder had an unenviable task of designing an extension to Arne Jacobson’s building next door. He decided to follow the lead by using the same palette of materials and respecting the feel of the original successfully.

The experience of walking around Hodder’s project after coming out of Jacobson’s, just proves that the old master is streets ahead.

From out here I like how the windows look and I hope they never get replaced no matter how much the tenants hate them for their draftiness and difficulty of operation.

A lot of people have left their homes in Donetsk because of heavy fighting and are now staying in studenthouses in the city. The separatists in the city are asking people to donate clothes and shoes to those who have fled. Here a family is looking for clothes in a building controlled by the separatists in the center of Donetsk. As a journalist I cover the war in Ukraine.

This is the Breakfast Room, tapered raised shape of which is clearly visible in the courtyard and here. Isn't this simple and direct approach to architecture remains refreshing and even more meaningful for avoiding 'clever gymnastics' one is likely to encounter in recent buildings.
