The skyline in downtown West Palm Beach could soon look a little different. Palm Beach Atlantic University is one step closer to building a 25-story, mixed-use tower on Acacia Rd and Dixie Hwy.
The project will cost $250 million. On Tuesday, the Palm Beach Board of County Commissioners approved Palm Beach Atlantic to issue the bonds. To make it clear, the school is the one paying for this project, not taxpayers.
This tower will add 990 beds to Palm Beach Atlantic University, as well as a new dining facility, fitness facility, and parking garage.
"This project really is to bring students back on campus and bringing them back on campus gives us an ability to educate them whole body. So they're there. We're physically available to pour into them. And then it also gives us the ability to just take some of their trips from being commuters," PBA Associate Vice President of Construction and Facilities Curt Brown said.
Brown said his will help with traffic in the city and create more affordable housing for students. "Currently we have 1,400-and-some beds on campus, and what this will do is increase that. It's basically an affordable housing project for our students. Who can live on the 25th floor of a residence hall overlooking the ocean and the water at affordable rates downtown?", Brown said.
These college students will have a brand-new high-rise facility that will be a marker for downtown West Palm Beach. "They build relationships with other students that they wouldn't know if they didn't live on campus," President and CEO of Barber & Associates, Anthony Barbar said.
The school is getting ready to start construction this summer. It will take two years to build, and they plan to have it open in August of 2027. The project has a five-year economic impact of $1.36 billion and will create close to 4,500 jobs.
"It's exciting for the students, for the students that are going to live there, for the students that are going to enjoy the benefits of it. It's going to be a very exciting project for Palm Beach Atlantic and for the city of West Palm," Barbar said.
The plans will be in front of West Palm Beach city commissioners on Monday for final approval.

It would seem from the views, comments and faves I've been getting for these shots it seems I'm not alone in my admiration of the Tietgen Dormitory by Lundgaard and Tranberg Architects. It would therefore be rude of me not to upload a few more shots before moving on.
Across from our hotel was this student apartment tower. This was literally the view from my hotel room.
It was actually fascinating.
Auckland is filled with international students, incidentally. Here, they live similar, yet very different lives.
In one, a woman changes her shirt (so much for blinds) presumably for a night on the town, just below, another watches tv, wrapped in a blanket.
While connected by a common living situation and a common occupation, the similarities end there.

The simple circular form of the Tietgen Dormitory is an urban response to the context, providing a bold architectural statement in the newly planned area. The building's circular form - symbol of equality and the communal - is contrasted by projecting volumes expressing the individual residences. "
Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA) is a private Christian university in West Palm Beach, Florida. The university's nine colleges focus on the liberal arts with a select collection of professional studies. In 2022, its undergraduate enrollment was approximately 2,400.
Founded in 1968, the university grew out of a local Baptist church. It operated out of assorted buildings until the first purpose-built campus building was completed in 1982. A subsidiary campus operates in Orlando. Eighteen sports teams represent the university in NCAA Division II competitions.
Palm Beach Atlantic University was the vision of and was founded by Jess C. Moody in 1968 while he was the pastor of First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach. He served until the first class graduated in 1972 and resigned from the presidency to focus on his duties at First Baptist Church. Two laymen of the church, Donald Warren and Riley Sims, became involved as trustees before the university began and continued to contribute time and support for many years. Warren served as chairman of the trustees for 38 years until 2007.
In July 1972, Warner E. Fusselle, previously president of Truett-McConnell College, became the second president of the university and led the accreditation process with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools which was achieved in December 1972.
George Borders, Vice President of Student Affairs at Stetson University, became the third president of Palm Beach Atlantic University in 1978. He was popular with students and the Florida Baptist Convention. After his resignation in 1981 to become the president of the Florida Baptist Foundation, Claude H. Rhea became president. During his presidency, the university developed the Rinker campus and expanded its academic programs.
Paul R. Corts, previously president of Wingate College, was the fifth president of Palm Beach Atlantic. He presided over the addition of two graduate programs, from 1991 until 2002. He resigned in 2002 to accept a position as Assistant Attorney General for Administration with the United States Department of Justice.
David W Clark, President of FamilyNet, and founding provost of Regent University became the sixth President in 2003. During his presidency enrollment grew from 2,600 to 3,291. Five new buildings were completed including the Warren Library, a mini campus in Wellington was built, and 96 acres (390,000 m2) for a new athletic campus were acquired. The university budget grew from $43 million to $73 million. Over 4,600 or 40 percent of all degrees were awarded during his tenure. President Clark announced his retirement during the 2008–2009 academic year the end of June.
On July 1, 2009, Lu Hardin took office as the seventh president of Palm Beach Atlantic University. A former Arkansas state senator, Hardin had previously served as the president of the University of Central Arkansas. Hardin resigned the presidency of PBA on March 4, 2011, shortly before pleading guilty in federal court in Little Rock, Arkansas, to two federal felony charges (wire fraud and money laundering) which occurred during his tenure at UCA.
On March 10, 2011, William M. B. "Bill" Fleming, Jr., the university's vice president for development, was named interim president by the university's board of trustees. After a nationwide search, Fleming, who had served as interim president for more than a year, was elected by the trustees as the university's eighth president, beginning his presidency on May 8, 2012.
PBA's campus is located in West Palm Beach. The first structure built specifically for PBA, the W.G. Lassiter Jr. Student Center, was completed in 1982. This was followed by Johnson Hall and Sachs Hall in 1989. A new campus was established in Orlando in 2002 and in Wellington in 2002. The Wellington campus ceased operations in 2017.
Residence halls include Baxter Hall, Coastal Towers Apartments, Johnson Hall, Oceanview Hall, Pembroke Hall, Rinker Hall, Watson Hall, and Weyenberg Hall.
Classroom buildings include the Vera Lea Rinker School of Music and Fine Arts, the Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy, Borbe Hall, MacArthur Hall, Rinker Hall, Oceanview Hall, The Greene Complex for Sports and Recreation, Memorial Presbyterian Church, Fern Street Theatre, Holy Trinity Church, and the Okeechobee Building.
A permanent home for Sailfish athletics is in the form of a 78-acre Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Athletic Campus at 3401 Parker Avenue in West Palm Beach — just a short drive from Palm Beach Atlantic University. The campus, located between I-95 and Parker Avenue just north of Southern Boulevard, provides facilities for training and hosting intercollegiate and intramural and club sport competitions. The facility opened in September 2014 and was completed in August 2017.
On January 16, 2020, Debra Schwinn was announced as the new president of the university, following Fleming's retirement. Schwinn took office on May 4, 2020.

Had a fabulous tour this morning of this garden located atop the newest student apartment residence at UC Berkeley, "Garden Village". Just been open a couple of months. Professional gardener maintains it, and produce is sold to local restaurants and public, as well as residents of building. Inspiring.

Student residences 1936
The University of Aarhus, which dates from 1931, is a unique and coherent university campus with consistent architecture, homogenous use of yellow brickwork and adaptation to the landscape. The university has won renown and praise as an integrated complex which unites the best aspects of functionalism with solid Danish traditions in form and materials.
The competition for the university was won by the architects Kay Fisker, C. F. Møller og Povl Stegmann in 1931. Stegman left the partnership in 1937, Fisker in 1942 and C. F. Møller Architects has been in charge of the continued architectural development and building design of the university until today.
The University of Aarhus, with its extensive park in central Aarhus, includes teaching rooms, offices, libraries, workshops and student accommodation. The university has a distinct homogeneous building style and utilises the natural contours of the landscape. The campus has emerged around a distinct moraine gorge and the buildings for the departments and faculties are placed on the slopes, from the main buildings alongside the ring road to the center of the city at Nørreport. All throughout the campus, the buildings are variations of the same clear-cut prismatic volume with pitched roofs, oriented orthogonally to form individual architectural clusters sharing the same vocabulary. The way the buildings emerge from the landscape makes them seem to grow from it, rather than being superimposed on the site.
The original scheme for the campus park was made by the famous Danish landscape architect C. Th. Sørensen. Until the death of C. Th. Sørensens in 1979 the development of the park areas were conducted in a close cooperation between C. Th. Sørensen, C. F. Møller and the local park authorities. Since 1979 C. F. Møller Architects - in cooperation with the staff at the university - has continued the intentions of the original scheme for the park, and today the park is a beautiful, green area and an immense contribution to both the university and the city in general.
In 2001, C. F. Møller Architects prepared a new masterplan for the long and short term development of the university. Although the university has been extended continuously for more than 75 years, the original masterplan and design principles have been maintained, and have proven a simple yet versatile tool to create a timeless and coherent architectural expression adaptable to changing programs. Today, the university is officially recognized as a Danish national architectural treasure and is internationally renowned as an excellent example of early modern university campus planning.

NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, TYNE AND WEAR, ENGLAND — July 5, 2026: A tightly cropped abstract telephoto architectural shot focusing on the cream panelled facade of Sheares Hall student accommodation. From my bedroom's window at the 11th floor of the Clark Residence. It's one of the buildings that once formed the largest hotel in New York City, the Hotel St. George.

This building when visited by me as a student in 1967 left a lasting impression and I was unable to get it out of my mind. I knew it was listed but I also heard that it was no longer owned but the church and has changed its function which can often create a mismatch and spell disaster for the original building.
It was designed as residential accommodation with 35 study bedrooms and three small flats for tutors and a caretaker’s flat to make the college fully residential.
The client gave the architects considerable freedom in developing the distinct design which has now become a residential home for the elderly. The original design concept was based on a circulation route between an existing nearby chapel, the new building and an old existing residential building. Some of these circulation spaces had to be enclosed for the new frail users but the integrity of original design is still proving strong enough not only to accept the change of use but I am informed is highly popular with a long list of tenants waiting for a place to move in. The old library with beautiful roof lights has made a wonderful dining/sitting area. The building now sits among new housing and other development and has lost its dominance over an open landscape with its bold forms and the mature tree. The new rather ‘flowery’ approach to landscape no doubt appeals to the users of the building and once again the old sombre looking building seems to sit there like a contented grandparent with colourful toys belonging to the grandchildren in its lap.

And still the shots of the Tietgen Dormitory by Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects keep on coming, well, at least for another day or two. Seen here are the projecting bays onto the inner courtyard, they're clad in a Copper alloy and look as good as they did when the building was completed in 2006.

De Uithof is the campus of the university of Utrecht. This colourful building is the Casa Confetti, housing for 377 students. It was built between 2006 and 2008 and designed by Marlies Rohmer.
I know everyone in AA went out and got photos of this sunset, so I'm trying to not upload the shots of just the sky... when half the state is shooting the same thing you are, it's hard to take a shot that's a little different.
The sunset reflecting off of the crew boys' house here was what got me when I ran outside and saw it.
I messed with the color profile on this one, but it still looks different in Safari vs. Firefox (the Safari version is loads more saturated. In this case I'm pretty sure that's the 'correct' version, and the Firefox one is undersaturated). I've no idea what the issue is anymore.
This is a detail of the colourful building called Casa Confetti, which houses 377 students. It was built between 2006 and 2008 and designed by Marlies Rohmer.
I would hate for these pages to become an 'obituary' column. However, some architects were almost invisible 'friends' during formative years and as these pages demonstrate, their work was always awaited eagerly and was a vehicle of inspiration for many.

As much as I like the 'exterior' (ie public) face of the Tietgen Dormitory building, it's the courtyard inside the doughnut shaped building that makes this place pretty special for me.

Grade II listed. Original design was to have many blocks, threaded like beads with link corridors weaving their way around mature trees but only two were ever built.
This era saw lots of 'modulated' prefabricated buildings, expressing living units on elevations. This was one of the best of its type and weathering has not been unkind for a concrete structure.
Living in Concordia U's, Loyola Campus, west-end 'Con. U. Student Ghetto' . . . a post-war, mass housing project where 3 story walk-up apartments housed plenty of students from Con U. Rent was cheap if you had a room-mate or 2. Facing East-here.

LUC was responsible for public realm and landscape design for 500 bed student housing development in the Partick area of Glasgow’s West End. LUC deployed a clear hierarchy to the design proposals creating a series of interconnecting primary and secondary spaces. The primary spaces deployed a distinctive paving pattern that was inspired by the rich textures of wheatfields, a nod to the area’s bread mill heritage.

Here we see an almost-textbook postwar Modernist dorm: lift-slab concrete frame construction, brick infill resting on the slabs, and anything extending beyond the prism requiring a different expression, in this case a lighter-weight steel frame for the fire stairs, plugged onto the terraces at the short ends of the bar. One hopes that if the building catches fire, it doesn't do so in winter, but nevermind - based on my own undergrad experience many miles away, I bet those are great hangout spaces.
This is SOM - not sure of the lead designer - and in this shot, I was consciously trying to mimic the kind of perspective chosen for the official photos, which so emphasizes these interesting end conditions that the evident symmetry of the elevation is partially suppressed. I'm not sure you could really get far enough away to take a 'flat' view anyway, so maybe I'm overthinking things. This is a nice period piece - perhaps not the most thrilling thing ever put on a campus, but for its genre it's not offensively ugly, and has a little more crispness and dynamism than most buildings of its ilk. The people who designed this thought it was important that certain things be certain ways; even if we might question their dogmas now, it does lend buildings like this a kind of coherence, perhaps even that slippery word "integrity."
With a population of 40K students, the university always needs more dormitories. Most students, of course, cannot fit/live in these apartment dwellings, but must resort to a variety of rented facilities all over the region. This building is across the street from the main campus, so it should be a prime desideratum.

Op de plek waar nu de zogeheten spaceboxen staan (hier dus), verrijst in 2015 een gebouw met zo'n 570 studentenkamers.
De 234 spaceboxen blijven staan tot en met het Europees Jeugd Olympisch Festival dat in 2013 in Utrecht plaatsvindt. Bewoners zal de huur voor de start van dat evenement worden opgezegd zodat deelnemers gebruik kunnen maken van de spaceboxen. Daarna zal gestart worden met het bouwrijp maken van het terrein.
