Three-alarm fire damages Los Gatos home

On Wednesday, July 11, 2013 at 1304 hours, units of the Santa Clara County Fire Department responded to reports of a residential structure fire at 16341 Lavender Lane in an unincorporatd area of Los Gatos.

The fire was initially reported by neighbors and appeared to have started on the second floor with flames quickly spreading to the attic. Construction workers across the street from the burning home left their worksite to check for occupants inside the house. They discovered a male that had been sleeping and assisted in getting him out of the house.

As the fire continued to burn additional alarms were struck summoning more firefighters to the scene to provide relief for crews that had responded on the first alarm. There were no injuries reported, but the home is uninhabitable. The fire was declared under control in just under 2.5 hours.

The small tour group proceeding to what is traditionally the front door, but at the Rosenbaum house this is the back door and carport.

Touring Alabama's one and only structure designed by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The Rosenbaum House is the second of Wright’s Usonian style homes to be built. The Usonian style home was a new designed concept intended as a low-cost housing for middle-class American families. In 1938, newlyweds Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum were given a two acre lot and funds to build a home by Stanley’s parents. After reading about Frank Lloyd Wright, they commissioned Wright to design and build the house. The first phase of the house cost the couple $14,000. The Rosenbaums moved into their new home in September 1940. The first photographs of the house were placed on exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

Built in an L-shape, the house is made from natural materials, largely cypress wood and brick. Multilevel low-rising steel-cantilevered roofs covering both the living spaces and adjoining carport. The distinctive feature of the house is its glass, with most of the rooms have their own door to the outside. The center of the house is the “service core”, built around a large stone hearth. The original Usonian floor plan provided 1,540 square feet of living space. After the Rosenbaums fourth child, the family needed more space in the already cramped house. The Rosenbaums asked Wright to design an extension. Wright’s 1948 modification added an additional 1,084 square feet in a second L-shape.

The house was occupied by the Rosenbaums until 1999 when Mildred was moved into a nursing home. This makes the longest occupancy by the original owners of any of Wright’s other Usonian homes. The Rosenbaum family donated the house to the City of Florence and sold the furniture and contents of the house to the city for $75,000. When the city acquired house, the house was in poor repair, with extensive water penetration and termite damage. According to the tour guide, “we almost lost the house for good after a building inspector looked over the house and saw the severity of the damage that he recommended for the house to be torn down since it was in an unsafe condition.” City leaders came up with a plan to fund the restoration of the house. With the help of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, along with the many volunteers and professionals, the Rosenbaum house was meticulously restored and opened to the public in 2002 as a museum.

The Rosenbaum House was place on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Built in 1772, this Georgian structure housed the Nantucket County courts until the present courthouse and town hall was completed in 1965 (opened to the public in 1966). There is some evidence to suggest that the date over the first floor of the west elevation is a bit early, and the structure was not built until 1775-76 ( nha.org/research/nantucket-history/history-topics/rotch-c... ). It was designed by William Rotch, an important leader in Nantucket's whaling industry, and was constructed by Ebenezer Rand & Sons. The building has served as a Federal custom house and has been owned by the Pacific Club since 1861.

Because of the history of the edifice, it is locally known by a number of alternative names, including the Rotch Counting House, the Rotch Warehouse, and now the Pacific Club.

Nantucket, Massachusetts is a charming 17th-century community located on the Island of Nantucket off the coast of Cape Cod in the southeastern corner of New England. Much of the community's well-preserved architecture dates to the 18th and 19th centuries. The island, county, and town are essentially one and the same, as the town and county have a consolidated government. Nantucket, which serves as the seat of its county, was home to over 14,000 residents in 2020.

The entire island is a part of the Nantucket Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The same year, the district was designated a National Historic Landmark, and is one of the largest such districts in the country.

The island is easily reached by a year-round pedestrian and automobile ferry connecting it to the Cape Cod town of Hyannis. Additionally, there are other seasonal ferries that connect Nantucket to other nearby ports.
