The stones were from a temple remodel somewhere in Thailand, the owner wanted to make sure that they would not fall down in an earthquake and he wanted the support to be artistic and invisible. www.ironrivercreations.com

The idea behind structuralism is that there are things we may not know but we can learn how they are related to each other.

-Claude Lévi-Strauss

I chose this quote by Strauss because structuralist believe that structures are the 'real things' that lie beneath the surface or the appearance of meaning and that is what Strauss is saying when he says there are things we dont know of but we can still learn our relation to them.

I chose this picture because if you were just looking at the outside of the android you would see its flesh and think it is human however if you cut it open you would see its electronic structure. The way structuralist believe meaning is hidden beneath the surface.

I visited Salem, a city where I worked from 1980 to 1987, in August 2010 to see and photograph a classic boat festival there. While there, I looked in a bookstore door and noticed this bookcase, which looked just as shown here. I didn't photograph it at the time because I thought the breeze from my shutter or the photomeric pressure from my flash would make it collapse. It's a year later, and it is still standing, so I took the chance...without the flash.

I like the work of Jeanette Barnes. Her hyperactive personality is evident through her use of line and energetic mark making. I made this piece in response to her work.
