My understanding is that the X-in-a-square you sometimes see painted on a vacant building warns firefighters that the structure is compromised and should not be entered unless absolutely necessary.
Maybe you need a civil engineer when you die. Not too many people today rest in peace by being exposed.

This 630-foot catenary arch is the tallest monument in the United States. Designed by Eero Saarinen in 1947, it was not built until the 1960s. At the time the complicated, yet subtle, design and unique structural system had never been attempted on such a large scale. Towering over downtown Saint Louis, and the Mississippi River, the shining stainless steel arch symbolizes the city’s role as the Gateway to the West and has become its easily recognized logo. Part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, the arch is open to the public.

Structurally tilted shales in the Cretaceous of Utah, USA.
At center-left is an outcrop of Mowry Shale in Dinosaur National Monument, Utah. The Mowry is a mid-Cretaceous unit having dark-colored siliceous shales. Upon weathering, the shale usually consists of silvery-gray chips. Fragmentary fish fossils are common in some Mowry Shale outcrops. In Wyoming and Montana, the Mowry is a significant source rock for hydrocarbons. It's been calculated that about 12 billion barrels of oil have been generated by the Mowry in the deep subsurface of those two states (see summary in Bremer, 2016).

This picture shows a traditional antiseimic structural system found in Lefkada Island, off the West coast of Greece, dating possibly 250 years ago. On the ground floor, stone masonry is designed as the primary support system, which may fail during an earthquake dissipating in this way some of the earthquake’s energy.

I present the following facts:
1. Insomnia sucks. I remember looking at the clock at 3AM, awoke again at 4AM and tossed and turned, and finally got up at 5AM. The alarm wasn't set until 7:10 AM. I am wondering if it has something to do with caffeine, which I don't normally consume, but I've had erm, 3+ espressos a day for the last week to be social with my coworkers?
2. It's currently 28F outside. And windy. And the low tonight will be 22F. Can I get a WTF?
3. I think I'm really going to miss this place when I go.
1947 Chrysler Town & Country Convertible
Lot 190 | $70,000 USD
Sold
From Sotheby's:
One of the last Town & Country models with structural wooden elements
One of the few post-war cars recognized as a Classic Car Club of America Full Classic
Powered by a 323-cu.-in. straight-eight engine rated at 135 hp
Presented in black over custom red leather with highlander tartan inserts
Wears white ash and mahogany wood trim panels reportedly refurbished by Tom and David Henderson of Classic Woodworks
Rides on 15-inch steel wheels with chrome hubcaps wrapped in Coker Classic whitewall tires
Nearly all cars to earn the vaunted status of Classic Car Club of America Full Classic date from the years prior to World War II, when flamboyant styling and exceptional craftsmanship combined to create exclusive rolling sculptures. Chrysler’s beautiful Town & Country models, produced in limited numbers from 1946 through 1948, are notable exceptions. Rare when new and rarer today, these artfully designed wood-bodied offerings rightly stand among the pre-war greats as Full Classics.
Offered in a range of body styles, the Town & Country’s many attributes are on full display in this 1947 Convertible. Combined with unique finishes, the car also shared the Chrysler New Yorker’s 127.5-inch wheelbase and 323.5-cubic-inch straight-eight engine. One of about 4,300 examples believed to have been produced in 1947, this Town & Country Convertible is among the few fortunate survivors.
Delivered new to Glenn Austin Motor Company of Los Angeles, California, this example was reportedly refurbished under the ownership of noted Town & Country collector, the late Lloyd Mayes, in the 1990s.
Said to have been originally delivered in Noel Green, Mr. Mayes had the car refinished in black. He is also believed to have had the white ash and mahogany wood panels refurbished by Tom and David Henderson of Classic Woodworks.
Other period equipment includes dual spotlights, rearview mirrors, driving lights, chrome bumpers with overriders, and a power-operated, black fabric convertible soft-top with red piping. The cabin is comfortably equipped with dual heaters, AM radio, and custom, rear windscreens. An electric fuel-pump has been added for increased reliability.
The interior has been refinished in a custom red leather with highlander tartan wool inserts, said to have been sourced directly from Scotland. The pattern carries over to the door panels and convertible top boot. A dark red dash insert and steering wheel compliment the unique trim. The inoperable five-digit odometer is stopped at 1,000 miles. Total mileage accrued since the restoration is unknown.
Powered by what is believed to be its factory straight-eight engine, this example is offered with a copy of its build ticket and FCA Historical Services documentation. Maintenance performed under recent ownership reportedly includes servicing the radiator and water pump in 2015, servicing the valves and intake manifold in 2016, and rebuilding the carburetor in 2022.
This 1947 Chrysler Town & Country convertible evokes the laid-back luxury of a bygone era and would make for picture-perfect transportation to one’s summer home or country estate.

When I returned to Scottsdale from Tucson, I joined Fred on a Sotheby's pre-auction auto tour led by Andy Reid who is considered an expert in European sports and luxury cars and is a respected concours judge.

This year I was able to escape the snow and join Fred in Scottsdale for sunshine, cars, and music! I also drove down to Tucson to meet Doug for lunch and spend a nice evening visting with Richard and Lola.

On an important trip to London a couple of days ago, I managed to find time to make my first visit to the National Portrait Gallery to view, what else, but Bailey’s Stardust. To me, David Bailey is one of those names deemed with greatness, exceptional talent and a corker of a phonebook; making it mildly entertaining therefore, that the first portrait I viewed featured Marc Newson and Jonathon Ive, the latter being a childhood friend of my mother’s. This was evidently Bailey’s personal invitation for me to continue through the exhibition with my head held high, feeling as significant as the middle-aged women sporting pearl necklaces and Prada handbags, despite practically entering debt from the smoked chicken and orange salad I had previously purchased for lunch.
I had a skip in my step, embracing the talent before me, marvelling at the classic black and white portraits, smiling at the shots of Bailey and Warhol in bed, quietly singing along to the touch of music in the ‘Fashion Icons’ room, and staring for approximately ten minutes at the portrait of “Prince Albert” for his ‘Democracy’ series in pure fascination.
Yet, it was the room titled ‘Catherine Bailey’ that stopped me in my track. It consisted of personal and intimate images of Bailey’s wife and children, including a shockingly heart-warming photograph of his newborn child, fresh from labour, forcing even myself – a self-proclaimed-disliker-of-children – to well up ... just a little bit.

Construction is the realization of great architectural ideas. At the moment the shovel first pierces the ground, the abstracted journey of design gets translated into its literal counterpart. Structural steel columns, beams, and cross bracing work in symphony to mimic the swirling dynamic of pencil sketches, parti models, and visualization technologies. This series of photographs describes and highlights a clear translation from idea to reality, capturing a specific moment of time and exposing the bones of precedent thought. This photograph is #3 in the series of 5.
Photograph was taken during the construction of BMW Welt in Munich, Germany.
