STROKE: THE SILENT KILLER, A PREVENTABLE AND TREATABLE CATASTROPHE

*Stroke is a global epidemic that threatens lives, health, and quality of life.

It is a major cause of long term disabilities and premature death

Stroke occurs when a vessel that brings blood to the brain bursts or is clogged by a blood clot. With today’s unhealthy lifestyles and numerous health issues such as high blood pressure, physical inactivity, smoking, alcohol overuse, stroke has grown to be an epidemic all over the world. Stroke accounts for 5.7 million deaths each year worldwide and ranks second to ischemic heart disease as a cause of death. It is also a leading cause of serious disability, sparing no age, sex, ethnic origin, or country.

The theme of the World Stroke Day 2009: “Stroke‐What can I do?”

This question implies that everyone can do something about stroke, whether it is on an individual or group level.

If you notice one or more of these signs, don't wait. Stroke is a medical emergency.

Call your emergency medical services and get to a hospital right away!

The FAST test

You can use the FAST test to remember the signs of stroke it involves asking three simple questions:

•Face – Can the person smile, has their mouth drooped?

•Arms – Can the person raise both arms?

•Speech – Can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?

•Time – Act FAST!

Yamaha and Suzuki two strokes - warming up at Chimay

On the 2nd day of February my dad had a stroke while coaching a basketball game. When he texted me that he was on his way to the hospital and that it wasn't good I thought sure he was having heart troubles and was driving himself to the hospital. With no further contact I took off for Kewanee. I was nearly there when I was contacted by dad's assistant coach and the hospital in quick succession and was told that he'd had a stroke-like event and would be life flighted to St. Francis in Peoria. I beat him to the hospital by nearly forty-five minutes despite having quite a drive, all the while fearing the worst.

When I finally got to see him I didn't know what to say. I was surrounded by friends and family even given the late hour and felt that I was standing in a hospital room looking at someone I'd never met. My dad is the strongest and most driven individual I've ever met, and to see him in such a state was something very alien to me.

That feeling didn't last long because once they put the drain in his head and relieved the pressure he was back to being himself. He begged everyone who got within earshot for a cheeseburger and was generally cantankerous about being confined to a hospital bed. His memory and personality were unaffected. His speech suffered only a little. He quickly became disheartened by the lack of motor control in his left side. That first week was a tough one for everyone.

Flash forward to today, and he's able to lift his left leg onto the hospital bed on his own and he can sit unassisted. He's been attacking his therapy sessions with everything he has, just like everyone knew he would. I can't say that I was never scared about what might happen, but i did and do know that if anyone can fight through this it's my old man.
