Inspired by Strobist.com I have been messing about with off-camera flash and as usual, Flux and Perl bore the brunt of my experimentation.
The flash is an old Miranda 650 OM set to telephoto mode. There is no manual power adjustment so it's firing at (presumably) full power from about 2 feet away from the cat, camera left, sat low and shooting up.
Although it's hard to tell, the cat is sat on the back of a large armchair, the flash is resting on the left hand arm.
The flash is being triggered with a cheap optical hotshoe trigger from eBay by the 580EX mounted on top of the camera, which is set to it's lowest power setting.
The image was darkened in iPhoto in order to blacken out the background, then sharpened to enhance the detail of the fur. Quite basic but I was pleased with the effect and I think it shows what you can do with even a very old Flash without manual power adjustment.

I set a couple of my flashes out and put them in order of power. This was more my strobist evolution (although I did get the 120j after the b1600). I did in fact start with an sb-400 using a chord off camera! Ah the memories....

This nice fellow has written more than one incredible screenplay, including Raging Bull, Mosquito Coast, American Gigolo, and The Last Temptation of Christ. Repost from yesterday, needed some tweaks.
For Strobists:
Large octobox with grid directly over camera position, and an SB-800 a little above that to throw some fill back into the theater seats. Also, I asked the theater operators to hit the movie screen, right behind me, with a white slide to act as additional fill.
