Taming Light #47

The gentle flow and merging of filaments of light.

For new viewers: These are light refraction patterns or 'caustics' formed by a white light beam passing through a shaped and textured plastic form. The pattern is captured directly on to 35mm film by removing the camera lens and putting the transparent object in its place. Colours are introduced by placing complex coloured optical filters directly in the light beam.

The processed film is digitally scanned for uploading. Please note these are not computer generated images but a true analogue of the way light is refracted by the objects I create.

There is no movement of lights - a single static white light source is used. There is also no camera movement - the image is captured in-camera with a single exposure

BTW they're all 1:1 macro images.

Today was a good day. Not only because it was the end of a 3 day week but I became an official brand ambassador for www.lightpaintingbrushes.com

I'm looking forward to working with Jason and seeing where this opportunity takes me.

Happy days.

A small stream that flows into lake Elliðavatn, SW Iceland. I thought this looked better in b&w, the light was pretty grayish anyway :)

A stream just north of the village. It was making such a wonderful, chuckling noise, I just had to photograph it.

People stream down the Stradun, the widest and most popular street in the old town of Dubrovnik.

The limestone-paved pedestrian street is polished smooth from constant use, giving it a marble like appearance.

If you love London Night Photography and capturing light streams, Oxford Street is a perfect place for you to be with your camera.

The best time to be in Oxford Street is during rush hour as there is a constant flow of double-decker buses, one after another, that pass by. Set up your camera in the middle of Oxford Street where there are proper pedestrian crossings. The crossing will also be the place where the traffic lights are and there is a slightly elevated concrete platform if you will. Stay on this small platform and you will be safe.

Once you are set up, photograph away! I do recommend a tripod or some means to steady your camera when you are on Oxford Street. When I am here, it is one of the few times I have a tripod with me.

Two words of caution. As buses rush by, expect a strong movement of air that could sway your camera. Hold on to your camera! And, even if you use a tripod, you might want to put your camera strap around your neck or secure it to your arm.

Also, do not be surprised (or alarmed) if a grumpy bus driver yells at you out their window. It happened to me. "You're distracting the bus drivers don't you know?" I simply smiled and waved. That may have upset her more. The incident did not deter me from taking another hundred photos.

Oxford Street has never been one of my destinations. In fact, during the day I avoid it at all costs because it is like Main Street on steroids. If you are visiting London for the first time, give Oxford Street a go but don't expect much except for crowds unless your destination is Selfridge's. Seriously, unless you must, don't add Oxford Street to your list of things to do in London.

Water cutting its path

A small stream just off the trail in the south part of Glen Major Forest. Water seeps out of the Oak Ridges Moraine and trickles downhill towards Lake Ontario.

This High Dynamic Range 360° panorama was stitched from six bracketed photographs with PTGUI Pro, tone-mapped with Photomatix, processed with Color Efex, and touched up in Affinity Photo and Aperture.

Location: Glen Major Forest, Ontario, Canada

This creek is often almost dry in summer, but is flowing now because of recent rains. The rains have also enlivened the vegetation.

I just liked the way this stretch of stream had so many colours. Fall seems to be a great time of year to shoot water.
