A product of Harpers of Aberdeen; this iron-ware business evolved from a single firm in the 1850s to become two distinct companies with brothers John and Hugh in charge. From wire manufacture Hugh's went on to specialise in garden-horticultural products while his brother embarked on general engineering and the building of suspension bridges. By the end of the 19th century John's son Louise, a qualified Civil Engineer, had taken on and expanded the bridge-building business. This straining post is a remnant of the Great North of Scotland Railway which ran the line from Aberdeen to just beyond Ballater on Deeside.

Collected from Cushman Blowing Cave from the creek at "Large Brown Rock" in the main chamber.
On the BG-11 plate close-up, this is the green colony that extends around the edge of the plate.
Many non-pigmented, motile bacteria are present, interspersed with the algae.

Community Tamalada (Tamale-Making Party)
In preparation for SoulFiesta del Barrio, we are organized a community tamalada (tamale making party).
Members from the Logan Circle Community came together-including Norwood Cooperative, families of Thomson Elementary, women from N Street Village, and member of Luther Place Church to make Mexican and Salvadoran tamales made of corn (elote), and Guatemalan tamales made of rice. The tamales were served during the SoulFiesta Block Party the following day, Saturday, August 10th.
The Guatemalan Tamales had a peanut based sauce with rice dough and pork wrapped in banana leaves for flavor, the Salvadoran Tamales had a tomato/pepper seasoned sauce with twice-cooked corn dough and chicken wrapped in banana leaves for flavor, the Mexican Tamales had a Mole sauce with Chicken in a corn dough wrapped in corn husks.
