We spent the day driving our daughter to Music Camp at Stetson University in Deland, FL.

I found this locally made vintage lid in a secondhand store. I could tell what it was though it was hanging high in the rafters and I brought it down with a pole.

Thirty bucks.

It's not a bargain unless you can tell someone it is.

I found one of these at a secondhand store in Hollywood, but it had a hole in the crown. Every other one I've found has a hole in the crown, actually. I was pretty lucky to find this one. I had another vintage fedora once... a black Smithbilt... but it was stolen from my car.

Technically not really a church, Stetson Chapel, on the campus of Kalamazoo College, is used for all sorts of events. I once a groomsman in a friend's wedding in this building. The tower contains a real bell that is rung by a traditional bell ringer. Not a hunchback, but a skinny lady of a certain age, who has lived a long life of many adventures. And drives a Toyota.

Stetson Chapel was dedicated on Founders Day, 1932, the 99th birthday of Kalamazoo College. It was named in honor of Dr. Herbert Lee Stetson, for many years President of the College. The Chapel, built through gifts of many students and alumni, seats 750. It was designed by architect Aymar Embury of New York City. The chapel bells were installed in 1984. These eight English tower bells are each inscribed with "Lux Esto" and the name of a major figure in early College history.

Kalamazoo College is probably best known as host to the USTA Boys Nationals tennis tournament (lousy Wikipedia link), but the college has been home to the Kalamazoo Bach Festival for nearly as long. While Stetson Chapel's not the only hall the festival's used, it's always been the main venue.

I first attended this festival in the early 1960s, and made it to most festival concerts until about 1980. For several years in the mid-70s I joined my father and sister in the Festival Chorus under the baton of Dr. Russell Hammar. So Stetson's familiar ground.

It's a gorgeous building. And Kalamazoo's an excellent, small, liberal arts college with an international emphasis. I very nearly attended K instead of Macalester.

I was in Kalamazoo again, obviously, last September 4, I think to transport my sister to a doctor's appointment. On the way I realized I'd not taken any Kalamazoo pix except around the hospital. Why not, I thought, visit K's campus?

The 366 Snaps photo for September 4 features a shaded meeting area behind the chapel, with what I believe is Mandelle Hall--a library when I was in high school, but long since converted into an admin building--in the background.

Number of project photos taken: 25

Title of "roll:" Kalamazoo College

Other photos taken on 9/4/2012: I took along the V1, and shot a few campus pix with that camera as well. They weren't significantly better than those I took with the tablet.

Known as one of America's top 300 historic homes, the Stetson Mansion a a true delight to visit. The 10,000 sq ft home sits on over 2 acres in DeLand, Fl. adorned with gardens, gazebos, fountains, patios, and a pool. From the exterior it appears to be Victorian however architecturally it is a mix of many styles. Lovely stained glass windows in the stairway areas in the front and rear of house.

The roof of Stetson is open once again to permit the lowering of roof support steel into place prior. The final step will be to install clear roof glass at the peak to provide daylights in the atrium

Built at the height of the Florida land boom in 1927, the lavish Spanish-styled Rolyat Hotel had a brief life but was later adapted to become the campus for Stetson University of Law in Gulfport. Many original details remain to delight today’s visitors.
