I built something!

Two years ago I was asked (as usual) if I have a SWAT van that could be used in a potential Arkham set. I didn’t have one then (or did I?) but 30 minutes later I did.

Back then I figured that if it won’t be used, then I can always sneak it into something else as a taco truck or a TV van, whatever, but it went thru.

The build is pretty straightforward except for the front, that utilizes an odd combo of plates and brackets built in every direction on a footprint of a 2x2 brick to create the distinctive Chevy Stepvan headlight assemblies with it’s eyebrow turnsignals. No doors, as these things usually drive open, and since the doors are of sliding type, I don’t think it’s feasible in this scale.

As usual, I built it in different colors, and different lenghts, but the final product is pretty close to my initial sketch.

This is also the set where I was allowed to wish for an element for the first time ever in my career here at LEGO, and I went for a tyre that I needed for years now.

It’s a real gamechanger for me, and you’ll find that tyre from September 12th in the 76300 Arkham set.

Walk-through vans are not so common in Europe. Some were built for parcel delivery companies like DHL and UPS. This Chevrolet Step Van got a new life as a food truck.

The design of the vehicle is supposed to represent a step van. These were originally built by Grumman, better known to me as the manufacturer of the F-14 Tomcat jet fighter and the Apollo Lunar Module!

Isuzu Reach delivery van in Redwood Village, San Diego.

Photographed in rural British Columbia, this is a 1960's Chevy 3000 Series forward control step van. The body was probably built by Grumman Olson however I cannot say for sure what year it is or which manufacturer did the bodywork because there are just too damn many versions of these. Chevy started making this series of vans around 1955 and continued doing so through 1967. They offered bodies by multiple outfitters with many different front end designs, some were badged as Chevy's others were not. Chevrolet also offered a larger Step Van King model starting in 1965. This is a very rare model because having scoured the internet I have not found another photograph of a Chevy step van with this exact front end styling. It has hubcaps from a GMC S15 pickup or Safari van.

Unit 1-95 - Poste de Commandement (Mobile Command Post )- Ville de Hull, Quebec - Chevy Step Van

I photographed this old Grumman Olson Kurbside delivery van at the Gold King Mine-Ghost Town in Jerome, AZ. The Grumman Olson Kurbside step van was introduced in 1948 by the J.B.E. Olson Corporation. J.B.E. Olson Corp was founded in 1946 by Jimmy Olson former head of the New York state Liquor Authority and Walter Heingartner owner of Kinney Motors Chevrolet in Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Olson teamed up with the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp in 1946 and they built a predecessor to the Kurbside aimed at the laundry industry called the Kargo King but only about 300 units of this truck were made. The Grumman Olson Kurbside was built on a Chevrolet truck chassis, the body is made entirely of aluminum and was originally produced by a related company called Aerobuilt Bodies. Chevrolet sold their own version of the Grumman Olson Kurbside for many years, I believe it was marketed as the Chevrolet Dubl-Duti 3000 Forward Control van and could be ordered as a 3/4-ton Model 3742 with 125” wheelbase & 7,000 LB GVWR or a 1 ton Model 3942 with 137” wheelbase & 10,000 LB GVWR. Identifying old Chevy Forward Control step vans can be quite confusing however because they could be purchased with bodies made by many other companies besides Grumman. The Kurbside was produced through at least 1969, this one is probably one of the last Kurbside model years because it has front side windows that are separate from the double pane windshield. (Kurbside’s in previous years had a rounded double pane windshield that wrapped around the corners). Grumman Olson, now know as Morgan Olson, has also produced the P600 & P800 UPS delivery trucks (the P800 has the rounded front end, circle headlamps and eyebrow type roof that came out around 1965) as well as the small very square, very basic USPS delivery truck known as the LLV Long Life Vehicle which came out in 1987.

A fairly heavily graffitied Grumman Kurbmaster Step Van late one night in Astoria, NY. These icy snow drifts just wouldn't go away this year, one of new mayor Bill DeBlasio's many headaches. 15 second shutter time, I will admit that the snow glow is partially due to the magics of HDR.
