These are the steps ascending to the Mississippi River overlook at Riverview Park in Alton, Illinois. The second I saw these I had to take a shot. They screamed at me of a dilapidated remnant of the early 20th Century - 1920s or 30's. With this in mind, I just couldn't take a photo and leave it the way it was in perfect brilliant digital color. I had to give the photo a bit more "character". This image is the fruit of my effort

El pueblo de Guimerà se fue formando, de arriba abajo, a los pies del castillo y la iglesia gótica, rodeado por murallas con cuatro portales, de los que quedan el del sector N, el de la E y el de la W . [1] El lugar que ocupaba el portal de la banda S, posiblemente destruido por la riada de Santa Tecla (1874), es ahora conocido por el "portal". Las calles, con arcos que unen un lado y el otro, tienen un trazado irregular, estrechas y con pendiente, de regusto todavÃa medieval. Las casas, construidas en parte sobre porches, conservan puertas y ventanas de época renacentista. [1]
Del castillo de Guimerà quedan muros de las diversas dependencias y la torre de planta circular, medio derruida, que posiblemente era la torre maestra. [1] La iglesia, gótica, es de una nave de tres tramos con crucero y ábside poligonal de cinco lados, con cubiertas de crucerÃa. La fachada es centrada por la portada con cuatro arquivoltas apuntadas y una ventana ojival en la cima. En el lado izquierdo se levanta la torre campanario de planta cuadrada, acabada a finales del siglo XV o inicios del XVI (en la parte superior hay un escudo de la familia Castro-Pinós, que corresponde en esta época). [1]
Las excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas en el transcurso de los últimos años por parte del Instituto de Estudios Ilerdencs han puesto al descubierto las estancias de la planta baja del castillo, asà como el camino de acceso desde el pueblo.

La ciudad de Guimerà , aturonada a la derecha del rÃo Corb, es presidida por los restos del antiguo castillo, documentado desde el siglo XI, que fue primer centro de una baronÃa y después de un condado. [1] Durante el siglo XII perteneció a la familia Alemany de Cervelló. En 1343 pasó a Castro, en 1371 los Pinós (de hecho Castro-Pinós) y en 1663 los duques de HÃjar, que fueron señores del lugar hasta el año 1832, en que se extinguieron los señorÃos jurisdiccionales.
En tiempos de la primera guerra carlista, y concretamente del 15 al 30 de septiembre de 1835, el castillo quedó muy dañado. El tiempo se ha encargado del resto.
La iglesia, dedicada inicialmente a Santa MarÃa y ahora en San Sebastián, fue comenzada en el siglo XIV por los señores del lugar, Guerau Alemany de Cervelló y Geralda de RocabertÃ, los escudos de los que están en la fachada.
Hay noticias de una parroquia anterior, en el mismo lugar que la actual, que inicialmente pertenecÃa al obispado de Osona y que en 1154 pasó al de Tarragona. Quedan vestigios de muros y una portada y, en el Museo de Guimerà , algunos capiteles románicos

At the top these steps are quite hazardous. The top step is cut about 30cm into the pavement. Anyone walking close to the fence could easily lose their footing and fall sideways onto the steps which are steep and narrow with nothing much to stop someone coming all the way down. It's been the same for years and I've never heard of anyone taking a tumble
