The steps were made famous by Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 film, "The Battleship Potemkin." From the bottom, as in this photo, one can see only the steps. From the top one sees only the landings.

Haven't shoot landscape for awhile. I have to dust off my camera and revisited Jumeirah Beach Park .

Somehow I don't think these have seen a lot of use lately.

This footbridge was out of use for quite some time after being hit by a lorry. See here – all fixed now :)

The Convent Stairway

Santa Tereza Rio de Janeiro

The Great Madness

This work of art began in 1990, as a personal tribute to the people of Brazil using the

colours of the Brazilian flag; green blue and yellow.

In 1998, when the stairway was almost finished, I discovered a place where old

European tiles are sold (at Praça XV, on Saturdays) to collectors and designers. I

was so impressed that I knew I had to buy them, even if only one at a time, but as I

brought these new imported tiles back, I realised there was no space left at all.

So I then invented the idea of always changing the tiles in a continual labour of

substitution. This original idea generated a living, constantly changing work of art.

Normally a work of art is changed or restored when there's an earthquake or fire

etc... but this work is very different. People sometimes thing I used broken tiles to

save money, but the fact is that tiles in the colours of the Brazilian flag are not

available, I had them made especially for this stairway then I broke them up with a

hammer and mixed the shards together with whole tiles. The stairway has become

a world collection of tiles with more than 2000 (two thousand) different examples.

There are tiles from: Portugal-Spain-England-Scotland-Ireland-Germany-France-Morocco-Holland-

Belgium-Czechoslovakia-Austria-Switzerland-Poland-Egypt-Algeria-Turkey-Israel-

Greece-Italy-Syria-Lebanon-Iraq-Iran-Saudi Arabia-Russia-India-Pakistan-China-

Japan-Thailand-Indonesia-Phillipines-Korea-Tunisia-Uruguay-Nigeria-South Africa-

Argentina-Colombia-Chile-Peru-Venezuela-Bolivia-Ecuador-Canada-USA-Mexico

and Brazil.

On 7 December 1999, I cried with emotion when I succeeded for the first time at

painting my own tiles. It was an unforgettable day. This was all that I needed to be

able to paint the pregant woman who has always appeared in my painting ever since

1977 because of a personal problem. Since then I have been painting tiles to honour

all who have helped to make the history of this great nation: composers, singers,

sportsmen, journalists, TV presenters, professionals, businessmen.

Also some of my friends, clients and neighbours who have always helped me in this

work of art, made with sacrifice, obsession and great love.

You too can take part, by sending me an old tile in the post. I promise to send you a

photo of the tile in the stairway, which has 215 steps.

I will only complete this crazy original dream on the last day of my life.

This is a beautiful, windy, serene, quiet and desolate area, Snake River Canyon with Owyhee Mountain Range in the horizon.

I was in serene solitude, enjoying it all... Nearest human habitation is a small village called Kuna, Idaho, which is 22 miles to the North and Mountain Home AFB, 20 miles to the East. Both on Idaho State Highway 69, aka, Western Heritage Scenic Byway, which is, indeed, beautiful with wide expansive vista.

I was taking in the beautiful otherworldly scenic view and was also hoping to get a glimpse of a nesting pair of Raptors and the like as it also happens to be the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, dedicated to famous conservationist, Morely Nelson. Every now and then I could hear the call of a Falcon but could not spot one.

Then came this 4x4, in there this young Love-Birds with an entourage of 4 Photographers/assistants. I had the feeling that it was an Engagement Photo Shoot as couples in romantic settings like to be left alone and nobody comes this far with 4 photographers/assistants just to hang-out and take romantic pics! Couples simply take "Selfies" with their i-Phones!!! So I greeted them with a smile and "Engagement (photo shoot)?" He replied with a smile "Just to hang out".

But I sure felt the moment right, about some time into the (Yet-to-be-declared-Engagement) Photo-Shoot, on the other side of the ledge, he proposed to her !!!! He got on his knees and all, proposed to her and then even added "You still have time to back out of it " as photographers were clicking away to their hearts-content... She was totally surprised, exclaimed something, which I could not hear in high-wind, but she did happily accept, judging from the smiles and hugs from my vantage point!!!

Later, on their way out, as we exchanged pleasantries and I congratulated the couple, he admitted to me with a grin, that he didn't tell me when they arrived, so "not to ruin the moment" (and the surprise).

This is something that I will always remember, the moment and the beauty of it all! What are the chances of something like this happening in such an area when one is on vacation and was there for a few hours only...? Lucky and Sweet indeed! May be a Good Omen too!

Thanks to my good friend Dan Alban, who grew up in Nampa, Idaho, for recommending this place, Swan Falls Dam, Idaho, among other places in Idaho for me to see! And for his family's generous and wonderful hospitality!

Idaho is really beautiful, especially Snake River Valley and Gorge area and up in the Pine Forested Mountain areas such as Idaho City and the High Desert country. And the beautiful, absolutely beautiful Sunsets! I will upload more pics later.

Just occasionally it might be said that I put off tidying up just a little too long. I know when that moment arrives - it is when it takes longer to find the tool than to use it!
