This is one of my favorite shots, thought I would publish it in b/w, it takes on a whole new character when the late afternoon sunlight is cut from the shot. Bulldogging or Steer Wrestling no matter what you call it, it is a fast pace sport.

The dream of every citizen of the former German Democratic Republic: a Trabant car from Sachsenring. Front-wheel drive, two-stroke engine, thermoset body and often ordered in sky blue with pleasure. In 1976 the Trabant provided 47% of all cars used in the GDR. The dream usually lasted a very long time – there was often over 10 years of waiting. Then there was great joy for the mobility that was finally gained. However, this model was sometimes delivered without a steering wheel. You had to get that to really get going :-)

The Trabant is nicknamed "racing cardboard" because of the body made of pressed paper (soaked in phenol resin), which is reinforced with short cotton fibers.

While on RAGBRAI, the massive bicycle ride across Iowa, I had the opportunity to pose on Bufford, the largest steer in the midwest.

Vintage car steering wheel. Holkham Hall Museum, Norfolk, UK.

Back in the day, the sixties, it was a chore to turn the wheel of a car until power steering came into vogue. Then you could steer a car effortlessly with one finger tip. At some time the auto industry must have realized that this power steering was a bit too effortless so steering wheels changed from power steering to power assisted steering.

I've positively identified this as a Ford Fairlane Sunliner. I'm guessing around 1957.

Kottayam, Kerala State, India.

The 123rd edition of the Kottayam Boat Race / Champions Boat League (CBL), held on 16 NOVEMBER 2024

The most impressive of all the boat races of Kerala is the Snake Boat Race, which is commonly referred to as Chundanvallams. The brilliant performance of the rowers portrays the inherent sporting zeal and sportsman spirit of the local inhabitants of the southern state of India Kerala.

Snake boat has got a length of 100 – 120 feet and usually more than a hundred people are on board. Both the ends of the boats are raised from water level. The rear end has a height of about twenty feet from the surface of water. Nearly eighty six persons are rowers, ten to fifteen are to give the rhythm, four are to steer the vessel. It will finish the 1.4 Km track in less then 5 minutes.

Steers are less aggressive than bulls, this lot, about 20 of them were very friendly, although if I’d have seen that big dribble before I got into position to take the photo I might have moved a little further back. Steers are also normally raised for meat, sorry boys but your future is looking as though it’s not going to be too rosy.
