This beautiful view reminded me a little of Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach, OR, except that there were multiple rock protrusions at this beach rather than just one.

State and local authorities, community members and others gathered on Clam Beach Vista in the early hours of Friday morning, March 11, 2011 to watch for a tsunami wave originating in Japan. A series of large earthquakes struck the north east coast of Japan unleashing a 10-meter high tsunami that took almost twelve hours to reach Humboldt County shores.
Calrailfans at Antioch, 14 July 2018
Our July Calrailfans meet was, as usual, at Antioch, California at the marina park next to the BNSF main line just west of the Amtrak station. Antioch is a potluck BBQ meet and always draws a pretty good crowd. People come more for the food and company than the trains, as the BNSF line is not the busiest in the state and Amtrak runs 10 San Joaquins through there per day.
I normally take the train to and from Antioch and this year was no exception. I went to Antioch on Amtrak 729 to Martinez and then 714 to Antioch. The UP ran the MRVOA (Roseville-Oakland manifest) through Sacramento a bit ahead of 729 and we were about 15 minutes late into Martinez from following it, but 714 was held for connecting passengers.
The Coast Starlight was in Sacramento as I arrived a bit early for 729, but left as I was walking to the platforms. It was about 2 hours late.
We saw 3 BNSF freights and several San Joaquins in Antioch as well as an LPG tanker leaving the Port of Stockton for Panama. The BBQ came out perfect and nobody went home hungry.
Rather than return on a San Joaquin and Capitol as I normally do, I decided to check out the new BART extension to Antioch that opened in late May 2018. Rather than build an extension of its broad gauge electric system, BART built several miles of standard gauge track in the median of Highway 4 from Pittsburgh to Antioch and is using DMU trains on the line. The DMUs are Stadler GTWs, which I had ridden on New Jersey's RiverLine.
I took BART to the Oakland Colesium station, where I connected to Amtrak 744 for the ride home. On 744, I ran into some friends and spent the trip visiting with them, a great way to end the day.

Gov. Justice delivers keynote address during 2018 Commencement ceremonies at WVSOM

Osteopathic School bestows honorary doctorate degree on Governor "for his invaluable contributions, generosity and strong support of WVSOM, the community and the state"
CHARLESTON, WV - West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice delivered the keynote address Saturday during the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine’s 41st commencement ceremonies in Lewisburg.
Following the Governor's address, WVSOM President Dr. Michael Adelman, bestowed an honorary doctorate degree on Gov. Justice “for his invaluable contributions, strong support and generosity to WVSOM, the community and the state.”
Gov. Justice told the graduates they “were an elite group,” but that life’s journey is long and there is always room to be better.
“I would tell you that this life is now going to take you on a journey,” Gov. Justice said. “What do you have to do in life to get better? I would bet you would say study harder, or be more focused, be more determined, communicate better or try harder. But I would tell you just this, if you want to get better in this life the first thing you need to do is admit you’re doing something wrong. It’s the foundation of everything around us. We often times forget that.”
Justice said that after medical school there may be times when life will be tough, but being a graduate of WVSOM will have great rewards.
“You graduates have been prepared by these great people and this great institution,” he said. “You may go off for a while, but we want you back, right here in West Virginia. We are really, truly moving forward. This state is going to provide you with opportunities. Go on your way in life and do greatness, but you’ve got to come back.”
