A New Vision for the Future
Making its debut at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show, the EXP 12 Speed 6e concept represents a bold statement on the future of electric cars – and of luxury mobility.
Designed to transform the EV sector in both concept and execution, the EXP 12 Speed 6e fuses the unrivalled hand craftsmanship for which Bentley is famous, with electric performance, heart-stopping design and the range of a true grand tourer.
The EXP 12 Speed 6e is a statement of Bentley’s intention to create the world’s first true luxury electric sports car – and an overt invitation for the public to feed back on Bentley’s vision for the road ahead.
Exterior Design
The EXP 12 Speed 6e is not just an opportunity to envision an electric Bentley. It represents the future of Bentley design, both inside and out.
The exterior body shell is a sleek expression of sports car design, inspired by contemporary architecture, aircraft fuselages and the geometry of the natural world.
A natural evolution of Bentley’s design DNA, it takes the marque’s trademark muscular haunch and powerline to exhilarating new heights. The short front overhang, long bonnet and wide, planted rear aspect all contribute to an unmistakable sense of speed, while the iconic matrix grille features an exquisite smoked stainless steel finish. Contrasting copper highlights offer subtle acknowledgement of the car’s status as a fully electric vehicle, while an illuminated ‘6’ logo can be seen through the grille.
Throughout the car, form coexists with function to support a more sustainable future. The twin bonnet scoops, for example, double as heat sinks, keeping down the temperature of the car’s batteries and drivetrain, without the need for additional cooling technology.
Interior Design
Bentley’s future is one of innovative materials as well as inventive technology. The entire central tunnel, for example, is hewn from a solid piece of glass, encompassing a high-definition OLED curved display. All principle onboard controls are accessible from here, including navigation, entertainment and climate control.
Just as they do on the outside of the car, copper details provide visual interest throughout the cabin, adorning the gear selector and Bentley Dynamic Drive dial control. Even the veneer panels inside the doors feature copper accents, drawing the eye to the handcrafted, natural wood finish.
Tomorrow’s luxury customers will expect intuitive technology and traditional craftsmanship to be integrated seamlessly – a demand that has dictated much of the car’s groundbreaking design. The wing mirrors dispense with the usual reflective glass in favour of cameras, feeding visual input directly to the dash. It’s one more example of Bentley’s future design direction – and the company’s ongoing commitment to exceeding customer expectations in everything it does.
Electric Performance
Luxury is only one side of the Bentley equation. That’s why the EXP 12 Speed 6e has been conceived as more than just a showcase of design and craftsmanship. It is an entirely new format for both urban and open-road driving.
Electric power provides an opportunity to exceed the performance limits of cars built on the conventional combustion engine. From a standing start, electric motors deliver phenomenal levels of torque, which translates into heart-stopping acceleration.
In order to deliver a true grand touring experience, the EXP 12 Speed 6e would be built with the capacity to drive from London to Paris or Milan to Monaco on a single charge. This impressive range would be supported by fast recharging, thanks to inductive technology.
New Technology, New Thinking
Not all new concept cars are truly innovative. The EXP 12 Speed 6e is about much more than a car, however. It represents a first step on a journey that will change the way today’s drivers think about mobility and what it can be. From rapid charging and fast acceleration to a world of connected lifestyle services, where onboard concierge software responds to complex voice input, the world of luxury transport is set to change immeasurably.
For Bentley’s design team, this means looking beyond the horizon, to a day when drivers become passengers and car ownership gives way to transport as a service. The car of the future will be more luxurious, more sustainable and more autonomous than ever before.

I took these photos on 22 Feb 14 at the third weekend of the Sherwood Forest Faire near McDade, TX, about 40 miles SE of Austin. Sherwood is a small, intimate Renaissance Festival but a lot of fun. I saw some old friends from the Texas Ren Fest but also met a lot of great people. So many photo ops abound - if you have a chance, check it out!!

Artist Statement
The platters I have sent to this exhibition combine several ceramic traditions. The first is, The Palace Art Pot. Palace Art Pots were made to demonstrate wealth and power. They were made to tell a story, to commemorate an event or a person, and to demonstrate skill and challenge the abilities of the artisans who made them. The second tradition is the Fish Platter. Fish platters were a staple of the Neo Arts and Crafts Movement of the 1950s and 60s. The third and last tradition is the One-Line visual and verbal Pun, Platters of the ceramic Funk Movement.
Humor through the use of the visual pun was a mainstay of the California Funk movement. Humor in clay has a tradition as old as the use of the material. I have always felt that humor has been given short shift as a serious emotion. Art work that uses humor and has been actively excised from collections of serious art. It may be that we do not understand the function of humor as well as we understand the function of the other emotions.
In the work presented I have tried to inject some humor into the decorative / commemorative object. The platters are big to give them a slightly overblown sense of their own importance and to be able to be viewed from a distance . They are meant for the wall and the table. The large size to fit the importance of large gatherings.
I have tried to replace historical patterns with objects reduced to pattern. Some of the objects are extensions of my environment or reflections of personal interests. Images of turn of the century technology, (the Machine Age), are a personal favorite. Subject matter ranges from humorous depiction of everyday objects to gender stereotypes. My abilities as A draftsman are limited but seem to be adequate for the kind and quality of image that the subject requires. They have a cartoon look as opposed to the crisp complexity of fine china.
The clay body, a red earthenware, is heavily potted and makes no secrete of its variations and flaws. The glaze work is in the Majolica style and is done very much like a watercolor on soft paper. The pots are fired twice. They are bisqued to cone 05 and glazed to cone 04. Some may have an additional firing to Cone 018 for low temperature luster and enamels. They are fired in an oxidizing atmosphere using an electric kiln.

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. (November 15, 2016) - Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued the following statement after an event he participated in with Bombardier Aerospace officials today, where it was announced that the aircraft manufacturer plans to expand its plant in West Virginia:
"From my first days as West Virginia's Governor, I've made it my priority to bring new investments and jobs to our state. Today's expansion announcement by Bombardier represents continued momentum toward a stronger, more diversified state economy. I thank and congratulate Bombardier, its leadership team and employees on this milestone. And I look forward to seeing the far-reaching impact of new jobs in North Central West Virginia."

Bombardier Plans Expansion of Maintenance Capacity at its Commercial Aircraft Service Centre in Bridgeport, West Virginia
Bridgeport, November 15, 2016 – Bombardier Commercial Aircraft and the State of West Virginia today announced plans to expand Bombardier’s aircraft service center in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The planned expansion is intended to enhance Bombardier’s capacity to provide heavy maintenance, component repair and overhaul support for its CRJ Series and Q Series aircraft. Ground breaking for the project is expected to take place in the spring of 2017.
“The fleet of Bombardier commercial aircraft in North America has grown to over 1,620 CRJ Series regional jets and Q Series turboprops – that’s an impressive fleet number that can only be supported by expanding Bombardier’s service centres,” said Todd Young, Vice President and General Manager, Customer Services, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “We’re excited with this growth plan for WVAC, as it confirms our commitment and ability to continue to deliver on the comprehensive service solutions that our customers have come to expect from us. In addition to serving our operators with improved turnaround times and enhanced service solutions, we are also pleased to be collaborating with the State of West Virginia on this project.”

The announcement was made at the facility and was attended by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin, other local government representatives and members of the Bridgeport business community. Alongside Todd Young, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft was represented by Stephen McCoy, General Manager, Commercial Aircraft Service Centres; and Chad Hill, Director of Operations, WVAC.
The existing 145,000 square-foot (13,470 square-metre) service centre, would double in size to approximately 300,000 square feet (27,870 square metres). Currently, the service centre has a capacity to operate at 500,000 man-hours a year; post expansion, its capacity could increase to one million man-hours per year to accommodate up to 20 maintenance lines at a time -- up from the nine lines operating today.
Following the expansion, WVAC will offer complete maintenance services including a sheet metal back shop with repair and fabrication capabilities; heat treat services; non-destructive testing; CNC

machining and fabrication capabilities; tooling design and fabrication; composite repair and fabrication; welding services; interior refurbishment; wheel and tire overhaul; and paint services.
About Bombardier’s Commercial Aircraft Service Centres Over the last few years, Bombardier has secured several long-term heavy maintenance contracts –covering maintenance and repairs for commercial aircraft. Bombardier’s commercial aircraft service centres are designed to maximize quality and increase return-to-service speed within a competitive, predictable cost structure. The facilities are backed by Bombardier’s 24/7 technical help desks, in-service engineering teams and support staff deployed around the world.
In addition to the WVAC, Bombardier also operates commercial aircraft service centres in Tucson, Arizona and Macon, Georgia. Each of the three centres has received the FAA’s AMT Diamond Award of Excellence, the highest honour bestowed on an aviation maintenance employer, for many consecutive years (Bridgeport 18 years, Tucson nine years and Macon five years). The corporation also operates a US network of business aircraft service centres in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Dallas, Texas; Hartford, Connecticut; Wichita, Kansas; and Tucson, Arizona.
