Another attempt at Startrails. Getting better and definitelylooks better if you stick the North Star in the centre of your shot in my opinion. You can see what I can only assume is a military aircraft leave Leconfield in the bottom of the frame.
If you're on 500px or facebook I have more work over there and feel free to add me :)
- www.kevin-palmer.com - While I slept in my tent, I left my camera to shoot startrails in the grassy field at Steel Creek Campground. The 91% full moon illuminated Roark Bluff along the Buffalo River. This shows the stars apparent motion in 3 hours time.
Taken from Oxfordshire, UK with a Canon 1100 with 18-55mm kit lens. ISO-800 8 seconds f/3.5
I was imaging continuously from 23:10 until 04:10 BST on 12th13th August 2022. I captured 8 meteors on this camera but some of them are too faint to show up on the stacked image.
2,040 images + 30 darks were stacked using StarStaX. Image processed in Fast Stone Image Viewer.
Have been planning on trying this so last night the nightsky was clear and gave it a go. 120x30 second exposure.
i'll leave the location a secret. this is 70min worth of star trails.
ISO1600/f3.5
i wont recomend doing this but i occasionally leave my camera in(well thought out) locations... unattended to take startrails. never in the same spot twice i'll add! its risky but its worked out ok so far*touch wood*
the above shot was just over 1hr of what was supposed to be nearly 3hrs!! of star trails but unfortunately a low fog rolled in and covered the lens in moisture ruining the other shots..............
Long Time Exposure - about 1hour and 30minutes.
Sony A580
Sigma 10-20 @10mm F/5 ISO400

This picture was made at the stellar observatory "Max Valier" in South Tirol - Italy
it was my first attempt of taking pictures of Startrails with FILM and i found that the results are generally better than with digital (but i have to experiment much more with digital to confirm this).
Unfortunately the framing was not as perfect as i expected (i would have liked to have less grass in the frame and sharper) and i find the little "dots" on the right side of the picture caused by the planes really disturbing.
Expérimentation des bases du startrail. Environ 200 prises de vue de 10 secondes - F3.5 - 800 ISO.
Un peu plus de 120 photos retenues pour le montage pour éliminer des lumière indésirables.
Finally a clear night sky for Canberran summer (pissing rain and cloudy for the past 2 months). I didn't get there till about 12.30 am. Spent another hour looking for a nice foreground while at the same time it needs to be away from light pollution, but in the end I decided to make do without any foreground. It was an amazing night sky tonight, plenty of shooting stars (I think I spotted 3), the Orion constellation, Southern cross and I even had a partial shot of the Milky Way.
Shooting details:
94 photos with ISO 1250, 40 seconds each, and 1 second apart (to allow the camera to save) - all stacked in Photoshop CS5.
Used an intervalometer (or remote camera timer) to program the exposure length and slept in the car while the camera was clicking away. The 94 is not a pre-determined number. I wanted to take 120 but I just couldn't wait any longer.
Manual focus (focus to infinity), turn off VR.
Post-processing:
Photoshop CS5:
File > Scripts > Load files into stack > Add files (Don't align) > OK.
Select first image, and set blend mode to lighten.
Right click layer, copy layer style, then select the rest of the layers and paste layer style.
Flatten image, save as uncompressed TIFF.
Lightroom:
Increased saturation to bring out the colours.
Then imported to Topaz Denoise to remove noise.
Imported to Color Efex Pro 4 for some extra details. The image was dry otherwise.
Increased saturation in Lightroom again.

Startrails over the Parpaner Rothorn in the Plessur Alps, Switzerland. Caught also a shooting star from the Perseid meteor shower.

Sternenspuren über dem Parpaner Rothorn in den Plessur-Alpen, Schweiz. Habe dabei auch eine Sternschnuppe des Perseiden-Schwarms eingefangen.
One of the busiest star trail I ever shot... Too many plane are there to spoil the party :-)
Anyways hopefully will be able to shoot at another cool less crowded location soon....
Con algún que otro fallo patente, mi primer intento de startrail...Como decimos en mi tierra "el diablu cuando nun tien na que facer co'l rabu mata mosques..."

This is my first startrails photo ever. Not much time available for this usual startrail shot and most stars are not visible because this shot taken at the centre of Athens.200pics x 2.5 sec
Finally got a night to go under the dark sky. Though the sky is not as good as New Zealand but is pretty amazing to see the northern sky. 35kms from main city Nagpur, we went to friend's farmhouse near Bazargaon village.
We were couple of friends (stargazers) equipped with binoculars to look at star clusters and hopefully comet lovejoy, but unfortunately we had treeline near the horizon and the comet not being more than 20deg above the horizon we could not spot it. So, decided to do a short timelapse / startail with all of us enjoying the rural night sky and campfire along with livestock.
Here is a composite of startrails along with livestock and us in the foreground enjoying the camp fire.

A startrails image taken from Mam Tor looking north towards Kinder Scout. 137 25 second images combined using 'Startrails' software.
I was not expecting to see this many stars from San Juan Island, but once I went outside and saw how many stars there were I ran back inside to get my camera and tripod! This is a composite of 174 pictures to get the star trails (equivalent to leaving the shutter open for about an hour and a half). I blended them together by hand in photoshop, which took about four hours for the computer to process! (This photo looks best when viewed full screen)
