East Hill Lift
The East Hill today is the start of the Hastings Country Park, stretching some 5 miles along the coast to Fairlight, encompassing over 600 acres of glorious unspoilt countryside, with open cliffs, wooded glens and the Fire Hills so called due to the fiery coloured gorse that sweeps across the top.
An application for a lift on East Hill was put before Hastings Borough Council by the original Hastings Lift Company whilst construction of the West Hill Lift was in progress. When it went into liquidation the Council resolved to undertake the scheme itself and commenced excavation at East Hill. The East Hill Lift was finished in the spring of 1902, the total cost being £6,000.
The upper station was designed to look like a castle having brick facing with local blue stone dressings. In each of the two castellated towers was an iron tank containing about 1,200 gallons of water, connected to stand pipes on either side of the track for illing tanks beneath the cars.
The lover station in Rock-a-Nore Road looked like a picturesque cottage and was built over 23ft deep chamber containing the huge cross-over pulley round which the railrope passed from one track to the other. The cutting between stations at its deepest is over 120ft and carried the 22ft-wide track at an incline of 1 in 1.28 for 265ft.
In 1973 the council discovered that it needed to be brought up to current safety standards and the antiquated water balance mechanism was replaced with an electric motor. The lift was closed and after some delay the work was completed with new cars on new chassis at a cost of £35,000 and the lift finally reopened in September 1976.
Resent Improvements
Since 2003 Hastings Borough Council has made a significant investment into both lifts as part of a modernisation programme. This has included items such as the overhaul of the gearbox and replacement of track and sleepers at the West Hill Lift between 2003 - 2005 and the repair of the concreate track, replacement of the carriages and overhaul of chassis at the East Hill Lift in 2009.
Both lifts have also benefitted from new electronic control and safety systems including overspeed sensors and secondary braking devises. The total cost of these improvements has exceeded £1m but have helped to ensure that the lifts remain in safe operation, carrying in excess of 200,000 passengers each year.

ROCK-A-NORE ROAD 1. 5204 (North Side) East Hill Lift TQ 8209 NE 8/484 II 2. 1903. The housing at top for machinery built of random stone with parapets and coping, and at rear (north) bartizans on corners. The front (south side 2 squat square towers flanking wide moulded arch, glazed in, in front of which are the tracks. The lifts are on a steep incline. At the bottom a small brick building with corrugated asbestos roof; gable with tile-hanging and small Venetian window, below is a central doorway and flanking windows with stone hood over on brackets. Back Ground
National Commission for Human Development (NCHD) was established in July, 2001 as a federal statutory body. It is a fast-track initiative to improve social sector outcomes at the grass-roots. The goal of the Commission is to fill the implementation gaps and improve public sector delivery mechanisms to achieve the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) through:
Universal Primary Education (UPE)
Adult Literacy / Gender Empowerment Program
Reducing Population Growth Rate
Improving Infant & Maternal Mortality
Capacity Building at Grassroots
NCHD has been officially declared as lead agency for the spread of literacy programs in the country by the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The 2006 UNESCO International Reading Association Literacy Prize has been awarded to NCHD for its National Literacy Program.
Visit of Mr. Pervaiz Lodhi – Member PHDF
Mr. Pervaiz lodhie a distinguished member of PHDF visited Malala Feeder School on 7th March 2015 alongwith his team and the Worthy Director operations Sindh Humaira Hashimi Sahiba. The team arrived at Malala feeder school at about 12.00noon. A warm welcome was given to the distinguished guests. The students from Malala wrapped in school uniform give a salute the honourable guests and offered flowers to the guests. Thrown rose petals in a queue to the head Masters room.
Where Mr. Moti lal – Head Master briefed the honourable guests about the back ground and the efforts taken for establishment of such a wonderful building through donations. He elaborated that besides donors the I-care, PHDF, Mir Ghulam Ali Talpur and the chairman usher and zakat the children are continuously supporting the school by making donations from their pocket money, which were a unique contribution and the idea for construction of malala feeder school. They started the school with the number of 25 children only but now after hectic efforts and continuous work hard the number has raised to 455. At the movement 5 Feeder teachers are placed while 3 other teachers are voluntarily putting their time and efforts.
Then the guests visited each class room one by one, where two children from each class presented rose flowers to the guests. The guest asked many questions about the education, the attitude of the teachers and their satisfaction from the school and learning land marks. Checked and found whole the school very neat and clean.
A gathering of parents of children was also arranged in the school, after visiting class rooms the honourable guests moved toward the stage where function started with the recitation of holy Quran. A student of class three Ghulam Rasool recited from Holy Quran.
Naat Maqbool (PBHM) was presented by three female students namely Huma Naz, Mehmoona, Nayab and Iqra
Mr. Pervaiz lodhi – member PHDF said in his address that PHDF put a unique idea of public and private partnership and have proved that by collective efforts Pakistan can meet the desired goals and objectives especially in the field of education. He called a meeting with stake holder and the private sector yesterday and will be meet with the honourable minister and PHDF members in Pakistan to contribute on their part in the uplift of NCHD and the objective of Education and literacy in Pakistan. He thinks that it is only NCHD which has office in every district of the Pakistan and grass root approach. He will try a funding and the support of Pakistanis in America and bring some good news as well. He is himself contacting various philanthropists and groups in this regard also. Insha Allah we will bring a positive change in Pakistan and continue our mission. He appreciated the innovative idea for construction of Malala school building. He also suggested that he will show the movie to the father of Malala who is visiting America in coming month.

Atelier Open Mini is een nieuw project van Atelier Open waaraan internationale kunstenaars mee werken. De deelnemers maken kunstwerken van 10 x 10 cm voor exposities op bijzondere locaties. Te beginnen in Amsterdam, daarna doorreizend naar andere plaatsen en landen. Met de kunstwerken van de deelnemende kunstenaars kunnen kopers hun eigen kunstwerk gaan samenstellen. Ik maakte mijn 6 schilderijtjes met Haas en 5 van zijn vrienden als thema.

I must start out by saying that I am not 100% happy with the edit of this photo.
I wanted to edit my photo with an old Action that I had created back when using Photoshop CS with a PC. This time I'm on a Mac using Photoshop CS3 and the Actions works, but when I go to save it, I end up looking bright purple and the background bright green. The edit is supposed to look grey in the background, a little heavy on the contrast in parts and just... well... good.
This edit you see here, is a bit more darker than I had hoped. I tried to recreate the the edit I wanted and it failed, but since I like the photo, I decided to just set and post this.
Now that I've got that out of my system. I can talk about other things. That was if I had anything to talk about. At the moment life is moving along at a decent pace. Still going out to weekly Geeks Who Drink bar trivia. Being social in other ways as well. Getting ready for winter. Other than that, nothing new. When there is, you'll be sure to read about it in a new photo.
Reception today unveiling up-to-date plans for Beloit College's redevelopment of the old coal-fired electrical generating station along the Rock River across the street from campus. The impressive, 38 million dollar project will be funded by donations to the college and, possibly, some riverfront grants from the state and feds.
Thanks to Daniel Schooff for explaining why the orange brick facade you see now will be covered with a new exterior in this design. The brick is badly damaged. It is a bare wall, with no insulation whatsoever, which was fine when it was a 24/7 hot-burning power plant, but it hasn't operated like that in well-over a decade. It's been completely shutdown for the last 6 or 7 years. Due to some many years of hot-cold expansion, the orange brick facade you see is badly cracked and crumbling. The college will cover it with a nifty new facade, incorporating foam insulation and river water into a low-energy temperature management system -- cool in summer, warm and insulated in winter.
There's no other way to make existing building work. And the smokestack is staying! (The LAST classic smoke stack in a city that used to be filled with them!) As the Alliant Energy representative said, most of these plants are being demolished, as they are usually unsuitable for re-use. It is truly unique to see this happening with the plant in Beloit.
