The day that started out foggy turned out to be pretty sunny by the time we made it to Washago. This is where the CNR's Bala Subdivision, Toronto to the West, crossed the Newmarket Sub from Toronto to North Bay and its connection to the Montreal-to-the-West mainline as well as the Ontario Northland to the north. The Bala was the former Canadian Northern and the Newmarket was the former Grand Trunk; they took opposite sides of Lake Simcoe north of Toronto and crossed here, north of the lake, to pursue their destinations to the north (Newmarket, ex-GT) or to the west (Bala, ex-CNoR.) Until 1921 the two railroads crossed each other at an interlocking tower; once the two railroads became one - Canadian National - the crossing was eliminated and other rearrangements of the two mainlines occurred as a result of highway changes to eliminate a bottleneck where the railroads lines were crossed. The Severn River crossing was also a factor in this re-arrangement. This is Train 220 (Winnipeg to Toronto) as it approaches the depot off of the Bala Subdivision. Mostly piggies, it has a "stock car in use" (my notes...I guess there were live ones in it?) first out behind the units. That wasn't an uncommon sight even well into the '80s out on the Canadian Prairies. The train had only 33 cars and van behind those three wide-cab GP40-2's, so I suspect it was pretty hot beef back there...and that is my friend's AMC "Gremlin" underneath the water tank. It seems to sneak into a lot of shots of mine!

A pair of knitting needles I have had for years. I don't knit, but used them as part of a decoration that consisted of a basket of yarn with the needles protruding. I am a crocheter and crochet hooks would have gotten lost in the basket, thus the use of knitting needles.

Started my walk about 07:30. There were quite a few hot air balloons up. There were occasional dog walkers and joggers.
In the early 2000s the kids and i would often go four wheeling and dirt biking through this area. This gentrified arroyo had been natural in those years. This now passes through neighbourhoods. None of what we see other than the volcanos had been here.
I'm glad we had that time. I'm not sorry that things have changed. The photo opportunities are just different now.
There is one section of this arroyo that is still mostly natural where I had begun my walk.
I'll post a shot from that section later.

Your scanner can lie to you.
Yesterday when making a double exposure with 2 different negatives I discovered that the negative was not as underexposed as I thought it was when I first scanned it.
The print showed a brighter image.
This is a scan of 2 negatives on top of each other, I might eventually scan the print and post it as well.
Printing is important, If you can find a way it will be a game changer if you love film photography.
The 2 negatives together were emmet gowin's idea when he was picking them up to look at them he looked at them together in the light, not sure if he did it on purpose or not.
He also may have said something like “be careful to not be accused of mimicking my work and tell them it was my idea”.
I’ll take it.

I rarely post flowers and almost never link to any songs, but I am doing both today. Not sure why. Oh, yeah...it is Wednesday and I thought I should go for this bokeh thingy (HBW everyone!), but still have no explanation for the song. Other than I borrowed a title from it. So here it is.
START POINT LIGHTHOUSE WAS BUILT BY TRINITY HOUSE IN 1836, MARKING ONE OF THE MOST EXPOSED PENINSULAS ON THE ENGLISH COAST. START POINT RUNS SHARPLY ALMOST A MILE INTO THE SEA ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF START BAY NEAR DARTMOUTH. THE LIGHTHOUSE - SITED AT THE VERY END OF THE HEADLAND - GUIDES VESSELS IN PASSAGE ALONG THE ENGLISH CHANNEL.
JAMES WALKER DESIGNED START POINT LIGHTHOUSE IN 1836 AND IT OWES MUCH TO THE GOTHIC MOVEMENT IN ARCHITECTURE OF THE TIME, WITH ITS BATTLEMENTED PARAPET. TWO WHITE LIGHTS WERE ORIGINALLY EXHIBITED, ONE REVOLVING AND ONE FIXED TO MARK THE SKERRIES BANK; A FIXED RED SUBSIDIARY LIGHT STILL MARKS THIS HAZARD. THE OPTIC USED WAS THE FIRST OF ITS KIND USED BY TRINITY HOUSE.
EVEN SO, THE LIGHT WAS FOUND TO BE INADEQUATE IN FOG AND A BELL WAS INSTALLED IN THE 1860S; THE MACHINERY WAS HOUSED IN A SMALL BUILDING ON THE CLIFF FACE AND OPERATED BY A WEIGHT WHICH FELL IN A TUBE RUNNING DOWN THE SHEER CLIFF. A SIREN REPLACED THE BELL AFTER ONLY 15 YEARS.
IN 1871 THE INTERMEDIATE FLOORS OF THE TOWER OF 1836 WERE REMOVED AND EXTRA ACCOMMODATION PROVIDED IN COMMON WITH ALL TRINITY HOUSE STATIONS.
COASTAL EROSION CAUSED THE COLLAPSE OF THE FOG SIGNAL BUILDING IN DECEMBER 1989; THE SITE WAS LEVELLED, A NEW RETAINING WALL BUILT AND A FREE STANDING FOG SIGNAL STACK PUT IN PLACE.
THE LIGHTHOUSE WAS AUTOMATED IN 1993. THE LIGHTHOUSE IS NOW MONITORED AND CONTROLLED FROM TRINITY HOUSE’S PLANNING CENTRE IN HARWICH, ESSEX.
Story: Jeremiah has been asking to learn to knit for months because he wants to make a scarf. He started today, working diligently and carefully. He's ambidextrous, so I though it would be hard for him, but he caught on quickly!
Technical: The situation developed quickly, and I just grabbed my camera. This was my first and my favorite, but I'm not really pleased. The focus is on the needles, but I'm not sure that's where it should be. My eyes seem a bit confused. Also, it was overcast and gloomy, so I had to have my ISO pushed WAY up. I kept making adjustments to my exposure and moving around a bit, but I just couldn't make it work. Maybe a different crop?
CC always welcome.
