We spent 6 days at Magee Marsh (the Warbler capital of the world) mid May. We saw 18 species of warblers during that time. We didn't photograph them all, but had good looks at all of them.

The Standard Ten was a model name given to several small cars produced by the British Standard Motor Company between 1906 and 1961. The name was a reference to the car's fiscal horsepower or tax horsepower, a function of the surface area of the pistons. This 1934 Standard 10, WF 6766, is seen arriving at the Pre-War Prescott event on 11th September 2021.
A nice standard-cab consist on this particular afternoon's version of Bloomington-to-Decatur train D36, including SD40E 6329 (ex-CR SD50 6762) and GP60 7108, seen approaching the north end of the siding at Lodge, Illinois. For the time being, the former Wabash searchlights still stand here and a few other places on this, Norfolk Southern's Bloomington District.

Muscovy Ducks (Cairina moschata) are one of the most distinct, ancient, and unusual waterfowl species on earth. Unlike almost all other domestic duck breeds, which are descended from the Mallard, Muscovies come from a completely separate lineage native to Central and South America.
Unique Physical Attributes
Facial Caruncles:
The most striking feature of a Muscovy is the bumpy, fleshy red skin around the eyes and bill. These function similarly to a turkey's wattle, protecting their faces and helping to dissipate heat in warm climates.
Tree-Perching Adaptations:
Muscovies are considered "perching ducks". They have uniquely strong claws on their webbed feet, allowing them to easily grip branches and roost high up in trees.
Massive Size Differences: T
hey exhibit extreme sexual dimorphism. Drakes (males) can weigh up to 15 pounds (6.8 kg) and are nearly double the size of hens (females), which typically stay around 6–8 pounds (2.7–3.6 kg).
Behavior & Environment
The "Quackless" Duck:
Muscovies are exceptionally quiet. They do not produce the classic loud quack associated with ducks. Instead, males make a low, breathy huffing or hissing noise, while females communicate with soft, melodic trills or coos.
Tail Wagging:
They display their emotions very visibly through body language. When they are happy, excited, or greeting a regular visitor, they will vigorously wag their large, flat tails like a dog.
Independent Mothers:
Female Muscovies have powerful maternal instincts and are known to be exceptional brooders. They will sit patiently through a 35-day incubation period (longer than the standard 28 days for most ducks) to hatch large clutches of 10 to 20 eggs.
Diet and Practical Value
Natural Pest Control:
Muscovies are prized by farmers and gardeners because they are voracious insect predators. They are highly effective at controlling populations of mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and grasshoppers.
Omnivorous Grazers:
Beyond bugs, they forage on grasses, seeds, roots, small fish, and reptiles. They generally spend less time swimming than other ducks, choosing to spend most of their day foraging on solid ground.
Culinary Use:
In culinary contexts, they are frequently referred to as Barbary ducks. Their meat is deeply valued for being exceptionally lean, dark red, and robustly flavored—often compared to beef or veal rather than traditional poultry
The Countryside is starting to dry out a bit, but there is still some colour around. I'm sure though that the driver of train 32 was more interested in controlling his long train of paper products through the difficult hilly and curvaceous sections in this area. However he will get a break as he passes the last hill before Colebrook before encountering further difficult terrain ahead. Run of the mill TR Class units TR12 + TR17 have this afternoon's honours with train number 32 bound for Burnie. Craigbourne Dam can be seen in the background.

Gold Standard. Hmmm. I am always suspicious of self promotion. Best Burger in town, best coffee, pizza, poutine in town. These are statements, which I do not put much faith in. I did not try. They may be the best, but sometimes GS is just BS. This store is selling $6 sandwiches. Not expensive for Toronto, but nothing special, nothing I could not make at home.

CN 2124 and CN 2126 lead CN 148 through Copetown West. With CN selling off and scrapping the majority of their C40-8 fleet, getting this pair was a must do.
The TLK Flisak is, by modern Polish standards, a very unusual train. It has been introduced (or rather re-introduced) into the timetable in December of 2021 as one of the very few off-season diesel trains of PKP Intercity. It also has a very exotic route, as it barely uses any mainlines throughout its journey from Gdynia to Katowice. It was created primarily to provide smaller towns in central Poland with a long distance connection, which IC has not been doing for the past 20 years or so. As a matter of fact, it is currently the only passenger train serving the station in Rypin.
The name Flisak is a Polish term for a person which guides rafts down the river, which has been an important job for the peoples inhabiting what today is central Poland throughout history. I find the name pretty suitable, as the train's journey mostly follows the Vistula river.
On 26.02.2026 it was 754.041 hauling the train 54102 Gdynia Główna - Katowice on the unelectrified part of its journey. On the railway line 207 the architecture predominantly dates back to the Prussian period with its very characteristic red brick buildings scattered around everywhere. Just like on this picture, which I took just outside of Sztum, as the train was decelerating for a halt at the local station. Even though the temperatures have risen from -20 to around -3, the ice layer on the tiny trackside lake was thick enough to remain solid for the following days.

After dumping ballast at Sanborn, this trio of standard cabs race this ballast train east towards Waseca. Powering this train is CP SD40-2s 6017 & 6073 and ECO 5025, right by downtown Sleepy Eye (4/25/2025)
I took a white rose from a bunch of roses I bought at the weekend and put it in a black ceramic bottle and placed it in front of a standard lamp with a red lampshade.
TRRA took over the provision of power for the Madison-to-Lindenwood Turn from BNSF just a bit too late for the switch back to Central Standard Time, as it does every year about this time. Nevertheless, good results can be had. Here, westbound T201 takes the signal at Grand Blvd in St. Louis, on its way to BNSF.

A standard cab SD60 approaches North End Morgantown in Bowling Green, Kentucky on CSX Q211. The siding here is being extended to 4 miles long, as a part of the Summer 2016 project for the Mainline Subdivison to be able to handle DPU-trains. Three sidings were extended, Cave City, Morgantown (renamed to Bowling Green), and Mitchellville. Bowling Green was extended to the south end of Memphis Junction Yard, and a new control point was added, Memphis Junction CP. At South End Bowling Green, double crossovers were added.
