SCREEN PRINTING

This laid back screen printing workshop is for adults who would like to come play with squeegees, silk screens, ink and brushes. Bring in something to screen (a shirt, table cloth, pillow case, scarf, party invitations, whatever!) and create a stencil, screen and some sweet new artwork on the 4th Floor.

ZINE MAKING

We'll work with members of the Society of Ink and Paper to learn about indy publishing and zines, while creating some simple zines using available materials in the library's zine making lab

Maybe you've been wondering about the latest on the bathroom renovation saga. The short version is that I returned to Trinidad on July 12, hoping to resume work both the almost-complete larger bathroom and the far-from-complete smaller one, only to learn that a key member of the crew may have had a nervous breakdown (not in any way related to my renovation job, I'm sure).

I've been too busy settling back in to deal, but today the intrepid Louis Armstrong, my joiner, came to install the glass wall in the main bathroom (towel placed there mainly for effect). So now I can take a shower without having to squeegee the floor of the entire bathroom afterward. Now only for the walls to be painted and shelving and towel racks to be installed. But one step at a time.

This poster was created for a FotoFest exhibition titled Mechanical Perception featuring photographic work by Mei-Mei Dillard, Eileen Maxson, Brian Piana, Soody Sharifi and Anderson Wrangle. These artists are also alumni from the University of Houston Photo/Digital Media program hence the lineup for this show. Mechanical Perception exhibition runs from September 5 – October 12, 2008 at the FotoFest Headquarters.

This was one of my first poster outside the usual Nameless Sound or rock music poster; this being one for a local art space. This was also the first poster that I created my new studio space, Box 13 ArtSpace. It was challenging to work in a new yet smaller studio space. As you can see, there are no drying racks so I had to lay everything out on the floor. Hopefully I can get a drying rack in the future.

This was from the second day of screenprinting. You can see the second color just after running the squeegee across and I lift up the screen.

Lines on the image probably caused by squeegee... a good reason not to use one! Oh well, you live and learn!

Winter was pretty easy around here this year so my car didn't see any snow, ice or road salt. That didn't mean it wasn't desperately dirty. I had a friend properly correct paint on the hatch as an Oregon gas pump attendant tried to wash it with the squeegee and scratched it to hell...

Paint was washed, decontaminated with IronX and Griot's clay before being protected with Avalon King Armor Shield IX. The wheels were removed from the car one at a time, washed front and back and protected using BlackFire Wet Diamond paint sealant. While the wheels were off, the wheel arches were cleaned and any accumulated dirt cleaned out. The interior was vacuumed and dusted, front seats got leather cleaner and rejuvenator from Griot's while the glass got cleaned inside and out.

About 12 man hours went into getting the car back up to snuff.

Functional and aesthetically pleasing – these are the results of good design. We’ve even applied this combination to the simple Squeegee. Ergonomic design and a superior quality genuine rubber blade make our squeegees a must have in any shower. One swipe removes unsightly water spots and prevents the build-up of mildew on your shower doors.

Engaging in the art of Sister Corita Kent

In honor of the re-issued book “Learning by Heart” by Sister Corita Kent and Jan Steward, a series of events were planned. A silkscreen workshop at the Corita Center in Los Angeles was designed to engage the community in the spirit of the authors, propose that anyone would create something themselves, and contribute to a joyous ceremony in the manner of the 1960’s Mary’s Day’s celebrations organized by Corita.

Banners and shirts were adorned with words collected by Jan Steward and designed by Handbuilt Studio. People and children that pulled squeegees, poured inks and stared at their creation until it dried engaged in the celebration deeply and became treasure owners.

Conceived to engage even very young children, the workshop taught by making, and sharing a creative experience.

about the same time as the last post of Susan in the studio, Clement Greenberg was often in town and when he was he stayed at our studio. As artists will, we talked and looked a lot at our work, but on one visit i had this very large canvas that I had started to make a painting on and it was kinda stuck. We all had ideas and so we each took turns over the next couple days working on it til we all agreed it was finished. Not knowing what to do with such a hybrid, we gave it to Clem. I don't know what became of it as it's not in the listing of the Greenberg Collection in the Portland Museum. The margins were initially supposed to be cut to the diamond that is barely discernable in the brown squeegee. I am not remembering the whole progress of who added what, but I do remember Clem left in the morning unhappy with the ochre lines he had drawn in. When he came back in the evening we were all happy with the halos I had put on them to transition them better. That is when we all decided it was done.

Kodak 400 TX. I was enamored with this dim street. Rome, 2014. This frame has a few waterspots from where I didn't squeegee the film properly, but I decided to leave them in.

It's called dedication.

The Princess spent time with Design Director Tandine Rawkins, and observed how she free-hand sketches all the artwork for every design. Her Royal Highness then moved to the printing room and had the opportunity to take part in screen-printing a design on fabric by pushing coloured dyes through an engraved silk-screen using a squeegee. The Princess also observed the last step in the production process where the printed fabric is fed through a conveyor oven, which heat-fixes the print to the basecloth. Vintage Footbridge looking a bit folorn, could do with a squeegee at least.

4 screens down and one more to go. I'm ending up using my squeegee each layer because of my paper size. I'm registering by eye and varying ink colors. Each print is different.

The Xynole soaks up a lot of resin - 9 or 10 gallons for the first coat. Betsy stirred all day. The vertical side surfaces were a challenge. What worked best for us was to pour the resin on a foam roller as it pushed it up, then squeegee. The weather has gotten unseasonably cool; waiting for warmer temps this weekend to apply the second coat.

Shot through our very dirty windows is why it's so blurry. Guess I should get out my squeegee.

Montblanc Great Characters Andy Warhol writing instrument.

The Great Characters Edition Andy Warhol is paying tribute to one of the major proponents of the Pop Art Movement. With his striking works, Andy Warhol broke down the barriers between ‘high art’ and ‘commercial art’ and made a sensation turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. The complementary contrast between the cobalt blue precious resin of the barrel and the narrow orange rings on the cone and forepart reflect the colour variations in Warhol’s Colored Campbell’s Soup can series from 1965, which are also carefully worked into the stainless steel cap. A dollar sign is finely engraved on the handcrafted, rhodium-coated gold nib of the fountain pen, while the squeegee he used in silkscreen printing is captured in the design of the clip. The cap ring of the edition is adorned with an engraving of Warhol’s signature.

My first attempt at photographing lightning... from the safety of my apartment building of course. Too bad our windows do not open up much. Otherwise I would've used a squeegee to keep the window clean of rain drops.

I always thought I'd rescued Squeegee, since he was a stray, and I took him in and cared for him. His health problems would have made it impossible to live for more than a year longer had I not. The truth is, Squeegee actually rescued me right back!

I had my first migraine when I was seven years old. I can recall my mother having mentioned having a headache sometmes, and I didn't understand because I'd never had one. then, one fall day, it hit. I was outside playing, and all of a sudden, out of the blue, I had this terrible pain in my head. It didn't take much for me to realize this was probably what Mom was talking about. However, the sudden, hideous onslaught was different than what she experienced. Over time, they became a little more frequent, but not enough for me to realize why I was getting them. Back then, it was most likely a combination of hormones and cold fronts, and with each year, the headaches I had already begun to call migraines because of their intensity, were hitting enough for me to start expecting them.

When I was in Junior High School, I started singing solos. In High School, I recall riding on a school bus to a performance, and leaning my head up against the window because the coolness seemed to help. Eventually, almost nothing would. By early adulthood, they were frequent enough that I started carrying over the counter bottles of Vanquish or Excedrin in my purse. By then, I knew that light and sound and heat made them unbearable. In my thirties and forties they peaked to where it was almost constant, and I had been seeing a neurologist and taking anti-seizure meds to break the pain cycles.

In 1998, I met Squeegee. In January, 1999, I adopted him. Little did I know that this pretty, orange wonder had an ability that would help me way more than I ever helped him! Squeegee could sense when my headaches were coming on- usually in my sleep when I wouldn't realize until it was too late, and would be unable to function at all the following morning, missing work, church, and life. With his warnings- high pitched squeeks that would wake me out of the deepest sleep, especially since I'd been a very high soprano and pick up on high pitched noises like sirens, (or Squeegee :-) ) before most people do, I would be able to get up and take my meds, and often avoid being out of commission, and in agony for at least ten hours! His persistence was uncanny, and he would only stop squeeking when I would get up and take the medicine!

This morning, a cold front began to come through Central Florida. It wasn't a major one, but the pressure drop triggered a migraine, which these days, I don't have as often. Squeegee's been off his game a bit since he's an old boy now, but in true form, he began his squeeking while it was still dark, and stopped when I arose and took my meds. It took 6 Ibuprofen tablets, a cup of coffee, and over 9 hours to begin to feel normal, but without Squeegee, I wouldn't have been able to drive the thirty miles I had to go to get to work in Orange City this morning. As usual, my rescued kitty rescued me back.

Tonight I think Squeeks will get some extra tuna as a reward! This pic of him was taken some time ago, but Squeegee hasn't changed very much. He's a little raggier around the edges, but so am I. He's my precious boy, and I suppose we'll be rescuing each other for a little while longer.
