Spectrum encore in doubt
Eviction notice. Development a threat to storied music venue
MARY LAMEY

Thursday, January 11, 2007
Frantic last-minute negotiations are under way to save the Spectrum, one of Montreal's favourite and most storied live music venues.
The club, on Ste. Catherine St. east of Bleury St., has been served with an eviction notice by landlord SIDEV Realty Corp. and is slated to shut in August.
SIDEV owns about half the block on the south side of Ste. Catherine, between Bleury and Jeanne Mance Sts.
It plans to raze the club and 10 other small buildings to build new retail space and a 15- to 17-storey office tower in their place.
The price tag for the two-phase scheme is about $70 million.
Initially, SIDEV envisioned a project that was to have incorporated a $10-million music club in partnership with entertainment company L'Equipe Spectra.
Spectra produces the International Jazz Festival, the FrancoFolies and other city festivals.
It also runs concert venues, including the Spectrum.
But the developer has scrapped that plan, saying delays are costing it money and it must move ahead with the redevelopment, with or without Spectra.
"Spectra is waiting to find out about funding, and we can't wait any longer," said Sam Benatar, SIDEV's president. "We've been waiting since October."
At issue was the future of the Place des Festivals, a permanent open-air festival venue that has been proposed by Spectra for the northwest corner of Jeanne Mance and Ste. Catherine.
According to SIDEV, the concert venue can't go ahead without the plaza. Place des Festivals, a pet project of the previous Parti Quebecois government, is not at the top of the Liberal government's agenda.
Spectra president Alain Simard is hoping for a last-minute miracle, namely that he'll find a deep-pocketed corporate sponsor willing to pay for the naming rights to the Spectrum.
"A million dollars a year for 10 years to have your name on Montreal's best-known club - that's $10 million, what we need to build it," Simard said.
Spectra took over Club Montreal, as the former Alouette Cinema was then known, in 1982. The intimate 900- to 1,200-seater has been the scene of many memorable concerts by artists on their way up.
It is also a key venue for the Montreal International Jazz Festival.
This is the second time Spectra has been frustrated in its efforts to build a new club on the current Spectrum site.
Five years ago, the company and Softimage mogul Daniel Langlois signed a 20-year lease for the building and had an agreement with Famous Players to open a multiplex as part of the project. The deal fell apart when Famous Players was sold to Cineplex.
"You cannot build a concert hall without public money," Simard said. "The economics just aren't there. You can rent the Spectrum for $1,200 a night. You can't pay the mortgage on a $10-million building with that."
Simard said Spectra had been willing to put up $2 million of its own money.
Spectra's other best option might be to push to relocate across Ste. Catherine from the Spectrum in what is known as the Balmoral block.
The province controls the south end of the block, including the Blumenthal building and TD Bank, which front on Ste. Catherine, while the city controls the parking lot and vacant land fronting on de Maisonneuve Blvd.
That again would imply government money and the project probably wouldn't get a quick green light, Simard added.
SIDEV has not yet formally presented its project to the borough of Ville Marie, which will have to approve it before demolition permits are issued, borough mayor Benoit Labonte said.
The company is well known in Montreal as a landlord. Last year, it invested $25 million to renovate the Gordon Brown building on de Maisonneuve Blvd., turning it from an industrial property and hub of the local fur industry into a modern office block.
Spectra's offices now occupy two floors of the building.
The city of Montreal backs the plan to rebrand the downtown area between Bleury and St. Laurent Blvd. as the Quartier des Spectacles.
The idea is to clean up the area and encourage new development with an emphasis on cultural entreprises.
The Spectrum has always figured in those plans, though Labonte says the disappearance of one club won't have a major impact on the district overall.
"We want to encourage culture in a broader sense," Labonte said. "We need a mix of activities with a cultural flavour."
The city already has moved to expropriate a building housing a peep show at St. Laurent and Ste. Catherine as part of that cleanup.
There is no question of offering that site to Spectra, Labonte said. "Giving the land away, that's not in the cards."
SIDEV is in pre-leasing discussions with Best Buy, a big-box home electronic chain, to be an anchor tenant in its planned 50,000-square-foot retail building.
According to Benatar, there is keen interest among both retail and office tenants.
"This is a strategic location, especially with the new hall for the Montreal Symphony Orchestra planned for the area," Benatar said. "The block is ready for redevelopment."
David Burak couldn't agree more. His family owns five buildings on SIDEV's block, stretching from four doors east of the Spectrum to the corner of Jeanne Mance.
More than four years ago, the provincial government placed a reserve on the properties, in the event it needed the land as part of the Place des Festivals. That reserve expired last summer.
The block has fallen on hard times in recent years, with tenants moving out because of the uncertainty. Squeegee kids and squatters have moved in, setting up makeshift shelters in the abandoned doorways.
"SIDEV's plan is good for me, good for the street and good for the city," Burak said from behind the cash register at his women's clothing shop, Eve & Zoe. "They seem like people who know what they are doing."
But not everyone is happy about the redevelopment. The owner of Restaurant Vagabondo says he has operated his business for 20 years. Like the Spectrum, he has been served with an eviction notice.
"I've invested tens of thousands of dollars in this restaurant over the years. If I wanted to sell it as a business, I could get $150,000 easily. But I won't be able to sell. I'll walk away with nothing," said the man, who spoke on condition that his name not be used.
"The little guy always gets hit hardest."

My first time using this film, 5 pack of 120 format is $11.95 plus shipping. 100' of 35mm is $30. I really like the Xtreme 400, so naturally I gave this a try. In no way did I expect a grain like this, very coarse grain laid on a thin acetate that curled up after one pass of the squeegee. Another issue is the backing paper ink offsetting and exposing the image. Customer service tried to explain that this is reported when using MF cameras with a window on the back to count frames (like a Holga). Not the case here, the RB is completely sealed, meaning the offset came from cheap ink and not thin backing paper. In the end I was issued a credit that I used to get more Xtreme 400. This stuff is going to have it's place now that I know to expect the unexpected.

Notes: In 1905 Thomas Manly (d. 1932) of London introduced the Ozobrome process, which was a modification of his earlier Ozotype, patented in 1898. The process was based on a carbon printing method proposed in 1873 by Auguste Marion (1835–1917) and the discovery, made in 1889 by Ernest Howard Farmer (1856–1944), that dichromates were reduced by contact with finely divided metallic silver in the presence of gelatin, which in turn caused the gelatin to become insoluble. The Ozobrome process differed slightly from the carbon process. The pigment paper (called Ozobrome Pigment Plaster) was not exposed to light through a negative but was squeegeed firmly to the surface of a wet gelatin silver bromide print immediately after it had been soaked in a sensitizing and bleaching bath (called Ozobrome Pigmenting Solution). A chemical reaction took place that simultaneously bleached the bromide print and hardened the pigmented gelatin in situ, in proportion to the amount of silver contained in the image. The bromide print was stripped, and the pigment paper was then squeegeed onto a sheet of transfer paper for development in hot water, where the unhardened gelatin was washed off (Manly 1907). The principal advantages of Ozobrome over carbon were that prints could be made without the direct action of light and without enlarged negatives. pigment papers; two grades of bromide paper, fast and slow; sensitizing solution; transparent support; and temporary and final transfer papers. The process received good reviews and was thought to be the first ‘to bring the production of three color printing within the capacity of the ordinary amateur’ (Coe 1978: 104). Manners traveled to New York in 1925 to promote his process in the United States, only returning to England in 1928. Raydex materials remained available until the late 1920s.” (source: Sylvie Penichon, Twentieth Century Colour Photographs)
In 1913 Samuel Manners (1871−1954) of London acquired the rights to the Ozobrome process and promoted it as a three-color process under he name Raydex (Coote 1993: 76) (Fig. 3.18). Raydex materials included

Montblanc Andy Warhol pens. Great Characters Edition.
The Great Characters Edition Andy Warhol is paying tribute to one of the major proponents of the Pop Art Movement. With his striking works, Andy Warhol broke down the barriers between ‘high art’ and ‘commercial art’ and made a sensation turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. The complementary contrast between the cobalt blue precious resin of the barrel and the narrow orange rings on the cone and forepart reflect the colour variations in Warhol’s Colored Campbell’s Soup can series from 1965, which are also carefully worked into the stainless steel cap. A dollar sign is finely engraved on the handcrafted, rhodium-coated gold nib of the fountain pen, while the squeegee he used in silkscreen printing is captured in the design of the clip. The cap ring of the edition is adorned with an engraving of Warhol’s signature.

Andy Warhol
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1928 to an Eastern European immigrant family, Andy Warhol made a sensation turning the ordinary into the extraordinary. With his striking works, Andy Warhol broke down the barriers between ‘high art’ and ‘commercial art’. He defied traditional assumptions about what art is and how art is made and forever changed the established criteria for what we define as art. Warhol’s images of trivial objects, whose provocative presentation make one forget their insignificance, are instantly recognised by art collectors and the general public all over the world, bringing phenomenal prices at art auctions. Andy Warhol achieved something only a very few artists have achieved: he not only became a legend within his lifetime, but also a contemporary cultural icon that continues to inspire us today.
Andy Warhol Limited Edition 1928
The impetus for the design of the Limited Edition 1928 comes from Warhol’s powerful work Flowers, 1964. 4 flower motifs in characteristically bold colours are placed in the style of this work in a 2 by 2 formation on the cap. The silkscreen printing technique Warhol mastered and refined is recalled in the clip, which is shaped like a squeegee. As a reference to the on-going commentary on commercialism made by Warhol’s art, the cone is embellished with one of Warhol’s chosen symbols for this discourse: the barcode. The dollar sign engraved on the handcrafted 750 gold nib is from his 1981 Dollar Signs series. In a tribute to Warhol’s legendary studio The Silver Factory, the barrel is silver coloured. This Edition is limited to 1928 pieces in honour of the year of Andy Warhol’s birth.
As the preeminent American artist of the 20th Century, Andy Warhol challenged the world to see art differently. Since its founding in 1987 in accordance with Andy Warhol’s will, The Andy Warhol Foundation has established itself as among the leading funders of contemporary art in the United States having distributed nearly $250,000,000 in grants supporting the creation, presentation and documentation of contemporary visual arts, particularly work that is experimental, under-recognized or challenging in nature. The foundation’s ongoing efforts to protect and enhance its founder’s creative legacy ensure that Warhol’s inventive, open-minded spirit will have a profound impact on the visual arts for generations to come. Proceeds the foundation receives from licensing projects such as this contribute to the Foundation’s endowment from which it distributes grants. 11/09/2025. Cuxton, UK. The Princess of Wales during a visit to the Marina Mill in Cuxton, Kent, a family business that specialises in hand designing and screen- printing furnishing fabrics. The Princess spent time with Design Director Tandine Rawkins, and observed how she free-hand sketches all the artwork for every design. Her Royal Highness then moved to the printing room and had the opportunity to take part in screen-printing a design on fabric by pushing coloured dyes through an engraved silk-screen using a squeegee. The Princess also observed the last step in the production process where the printed fabric is fed through a conveyor oven, which heat-fixes the print to the basecloth. An ice resurfacer is a vehicle or hand-pushed device used to clean and smooth the surface of an ice sheet, usually in an ice rink. The first ice resurfacer was developed by Frank Zamboni in 1949 in the city of Paramount, California. Zamboni is an internationally registered trademark.
The first ice-resurfacer was the brainchild of Frank J. Zamboni, who was originally in the refrigeration business. He provided services to businesses such as dairy farms and produce vendors. Zamboni created a plant for making ice blocks that could be used in refrigeration techniques. As the demand for ice blocks waned, he looked for another way to capitalize on his expertise with ice.
Ice resurfacers are generally composed of a snow container, hot water tanks, a wash water tank, the conditioner, and a board brush. The engine or motor of the vehicle is responsible both for propelling the resurfacer and also powering the hydraulics that control the various functions, such as lowering the conditioner or raising the snow dump.
Most of the actual resurfacing components are contained in a heavy device at the rear of the machine, known as the "conditioner". The conditioner is hydraulically lowered to the ice surface, its weight providing the friction necessary for a large, sharp blade (similar to those used in industrial paper cutters) to shave off the top layer of ice. A horizontal auger collects these ice shavings, or snow, and funnels them to a vertical auger at the center of the conditioner. The shavings are then carried upward and sprayed into a large snow container, which takes up most of the volume of the resurfacer. In early models, a paddle-and-chain conveyor was used instead of a second, vertical auger. The height of the blade can be adjusted by the driver, allowing deeper or shallower cuts. This is useful for keeping the ice sheet level, improving the quality of the cut, and preventing the snow container from overflowing.
Wash water can be used to further improve the quality of the ice by removing debris and snow from deep skate-blade cuts. Located directly in front of the blade, nozzles forcefully spray water into the ice surface, loosening deep debris. Runners on either side of the conditioner contain the spray, while a rubber squeegee at the rear of the conditioner allows a vacuum nozzle to pick up excess water. This water is then filtered through a screen and recirculated.
Finally, a layer of hot water (60 °C to 70 °C, 140 °F to 160 °F) is laid down to fill in the remaining grooves in the ice. The hot water is released through a sprinkler pipe at the rear of the conditioner, which wets the cloth towel that is dragged behind the resurfacer. The towel ensures a smooth, controlled deposition of water. Hot water is used because it slightly melts the layer of ice below it, forming a stronger bond when frozen. This limits chipping and cracking, providing a more enjoyable skating surface. The water used in many rinks is also filtered and treated before being heated to remove any minerals or chemicals in the water. These impurities can otherwise make the ice brittle, soft, give it undesirable odors, or change the color and clarity.

Cleaning windows, mirrors, and other glass around your home isn’t a difficult task, but getting it done without streaks can be a challenge. These tips will help you get your glass surfaces sparkling clean.
1. Clean Top to Bottom
If you really want your window or mirror to be streak free, clean from top to bottom. Begin at the top and work your way down to make sure that no drips will happen on the glass surfaces that are already perfectly cleaned.
2. Use a squeegee.
It’s amazing what a difference this one simple tool makes on glass. Having to rewipe areas of glass is a guarantee that you’ll have streaks. Using a squeegee makes it effortless to polish each section of the window. A long handled squeegee is a must if you’ll be doing tall windows, and it will do double duty in cleaning shower walls as well.
3. Wash windows on a cloudy day.
The sun can prematurely dry the window wash, leaving residue and streaks. Wait for a cloudy day to wash your windows and you’ll end up with a brilliant streak-free shine.
4. Clean corners with cotton swabs.
No matter how hard you try, residue seems to buildup in the corners of our glass. It can be very difficult to get to that residue, unless you have the right tool. Try using a cotton swab to clean those hard to reach areas of the windows in your home.
5. Try an old t-shirt.
Try washing windows with an old worn t-shirt. Old t-shirts won’t have any lint residue and they are just absorbent enough to get a window polished clean.
6. Avoid woodwork.
Many glass and window cleaners can cause damage to the framed wood areas of our mirrors and windows. Be careful not to allow drips onto the wood that can damage these surfaces. Avoid spraying too much cleaner at once. Instead spray the window in small sections working from the top down to the bottom of the glass.
7. Try homemade window cleaner.
Mix together 1 cup rubbing alcohol, 1 cup water, and 1 tablespoon vinegar. Using isopropyl alcohol and white vinegar together makes a quickly evaporating spray glass and mirror cleaner that competes with national brands. This can also be used to give a nice shine to hard tiles, chrome, and other surfaces.
8. Use newspapers, or don’t.
There are many people who love to use newspapers to polish their glass surfaces. It does work and can work well, but many people don’t like getting newsprint on their hands. The newspaper also doesn’t hold up very well when it gets wet. But it’s worth giving it a try.

I decided to try an experiment with these shirts. I got cheap sheer polyester ($1.99 per yard) and stretched it in an embroidery hoop. I coated it with diazo and let it dry. Burned the screen in the sun and rinsed it. I printed it using an old credit card as a squeegee! Very cheap silk screening!
7.365 Now i'm just waiting for the emulsion to get here so I can coat my screens. $20 for 20 screens is much better than $20 for 2 screens anyways. Now to order some more screens... This year will be the year of screen printing!

At the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, the seals of American Trail are ready to splash down and make their big debut ! To help the seals acclimate to their new surroundings, animal care staff added 24,000 pounds of salt to the 125,000 gallon pool last week. Yesterday, three gray seals—Gunther, Kara and Kjya—and two harbor seals—Luke and Squeegee—entered the water together for the first time and explored their new digs. Visitors can view the seals up close and watch training and feeding demonstrations at 11:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. every day. The Zoo’s elderly gray seal, Selkie, is expected to join the other seals in the coming weeks. To follow the latest updates, follow the Zoo on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #PinnipedParty.

Whatever, the scraping thing that you use to wipe windows. Squeeee, geeeee. Hilarious.
