For the last two nights Squeegee and Barrymore have been shut out of my bedroom because one of them (probably More-More) threw up on my bed the day after I did all the laundry! It was not a pleasant experience, and thank God I had a waterproof mattress protector on there!

Squeegee has always slept with me on the bed. He's quite demanding about being in the place of honor, right next to the easiest exit, and will fight Barrymore for the "land rights"! Barrymore was shut out for years because he was Mom's cat, and I knew that the two wouldn't get along. When I took Tigger in, though BOTH of them were banned until I could socialize them. Now that Tigger is gone, the two fight like brothers, and sometimes it makes getting to sleep a royal pain!

With both of my cats getting on in years, I will probably relent, since it would break my heart to wake up one morning and find one gone and not having been able to get to me. I have to admit, though, it's been nice to sleep through the night without the two of them spatting or hocking up furballs, lol! When they bore through my soul with those piercing, sad eyes of theirs, though, it's hard to maintain any resolve!

This squeegee kid got furious with me for taking his picture. A bit of situational irony considering that he was inflicting himself on drivers. He raced over and started shouting at me to "delete the f***ing picture", and was shoving me, blocking my way until some people in cars told him they'd call the police.

Top of Page 1 and bottom of Page 2 of the Programme (This is a repeat of the title page.) This programme was produced with a typewritten stencil on a mimeograph machine.

Small scale publishing without print shop facilities in the 1960s:

Multiple copies were produced by cutting a master stencil page on an ordinary mechanical typewriter with its ribbon disabled. The finished stencil was attached to the cylinder of a hand-cranked mimeograph machine, which squeegeed black ink through the stencil onto newsprint paper.

This Republic Programme is an example of the typical quality available at the time. The same method was used to produce tests for the classes we taught.

(Discoloration of the paper is due to yellowing with age, plus some sort of a spilled liquid.)

Another duplication process, Ditto, or spirit duplication, was also popular at the time. The Ditto master was also made on a typewriter, and was used in a process which transferred purple dye to shiny paper. Both Ditto and mimeographs were commonly used in American schools, but Ditto wasn't available where we were stationed in Northern Malawi.

My first go at trying to get the Sabattier effect. Apparently you're supposed to remove your film partway through development, carefully squeegee the excess fluid off, and then expose it to a low amount of light for a few seconds. I guess. I just grabbed the film with some tongs and held it up to the stove light, which was blazing halogen. Didn't bother with the squeegee part, so that's how I got all of the bubbles and weirdness. Anyway, I didn't get much Sabattier-ness going on, but it's still kind of cool. Poor Savoy looks like it's gone through hell.

This pic was taken with my Hannakube pinhole camera, probably a minute or a minute and a half exposure.

11/09/2025. Cuxton, UK. The Princess of Wales during a visit to the Marina Mill in Cuxton, Kent, a family business that specialises in hand designing and screen- printing furnishing fabrics. The Princess spent time with Design Director Tandine Rawkins, and observed how she free-hand sketches all the artwork for every design. Her Royal Highness then moved to the printing room and had the opportunity to take part in screen-printing a design on fabric by pushing coloured dyes through an engraved silk-screen using a squeegee. The Princess also observed the last step in the production process where the printed fabric is fed through a conveyor oven, which heat-fixes the print to the basecloth. The 1 and only Sir Vival. The brainchild of a Worcester Mass inventor who was determined to build the world's safest car. In the early fifties he modified a '47 Hudson and built a car that was in 2 sections, the engine in front connected to the passenger compartment in back via an articulated joint. For maximum visibility the driver sat in the raised turret area surrounded by 360 degree glass cylinder that rotated thru vertical squeegees so the driver wouldn't have to view the road obscured by wiper blades. The car was featured in every auto and mechanical mag of the day. He displayed it at several world's fairs including the NY fair of 64.

Coloured Mindplein / Colored Mind square

Toen gingen we tien keer zo snel.'

Turning a grey-grey, forgotten sports field square into an artistically colorful place where the neighborhood sports and develops: a dream of artist duo Bruce and Linda. Now work in progress, and almost done.

According to local residents Linda van der Vleuten and Bruce Tsai-Meu-Chong, the basketball and football fields on the Colored Mindplein (corner Heemraadssingel-Essenburgsingel) looked desolate and neglected. They thought, wouldn't it be nice if this place could bustle? The designer duo submitted a plan to the CityLab010 municipal program that encourages residents to dream of a better city. And they received a subsidy - also from other funds - to realize their plan.

Huge colorful floor painting

Bruce Tsai-Meu-Chong: 'Our dream idea involves an enormous colorful floor painting, so that the squares look much more attractive. But that doesn't mean you have a bustling neighborhood spot. Together with 3X3 Unites, Panna Knockout and Concrete Lions, we train leaders from the neighborhood to take other young people in tow, to set up a network together. A community. For a real neighborhood feeling with a future. It's all about getting people involved. For example, we had students from the Marnix Gymnasium help design the floor painting.'

The idea is called Rebound, a term known from both basketball and football. 'But now we use it symbolically,' says Linda van der Vleuten, 'in the sense of rebounding or revitalizing. As an impulse for the neighbourhood.'

Splash, smear and roll

For the painting of 2500 square meters, the artists use a coarse, non-slip sports field paint, with sand in it. 'One field with three men costs an average of a week's work,' says Tsai-Meu-Chong. “It was very slow in the beginning. Until the paint supplier gave us tips on how to do it. Don't roll like you do with a wall at home. But first a splash of paint on the ground, spread it out with a squeegee and only then roll. Then we went ten times faster.'

The makeover should be ready this month (August 2021), and there will be a festive opening. 'We hope', says Van der Vleuten, 'that Rebound will also mean the start of a further improvement in the decoration for the sports field. For example, new baskets and new, but also more benches and garbage cans. We also invite the whole of Rotterdam to come and see how we are doing things here. Everyone is welcome to come and play sports and neighborhoods.'

Typography Example from a class I taught

Abstract marbling effect produced in our junior school Science Club.

A layer of shaving foam is spread across the base of a tray, then liquid poster paints are dropped on the surface. The paints do not sink into the fluid, even thought they have a higher density, because the many small bubbles in the shaving foam affect how the liquid flows. The paint blobs are then swirled across the surface using a toothpick, and a print of the patttern is taken by laying a sheet of paper across the top. The excess foam is removed with a squeegee, revealing the pattern.

A fun mix of art and (bathroom cabinet) science.

It is fun to squeegee until you look down and see that for some reason the squeegee has bled some weird purple squeegee blood the same color as the handle all over your fingers.

Hip bucket to hold an applicator and upto two squeegees.Strong and durable, with quick-release belt clip.

SQUEEGEE AND INK

2020

2013

For all the technical errors with my developing, this is the shot that convinced me I have the right developer...if nothing else. This was made with a Bronica SQ-Ai and Zenzanon PS80mm.

Film was Rollei Retro 80S, which seems to have a very soft emulsion (hence the scratches). That being said, Exactol Lux (the developer) is a tannign developer so it could be the scratches are magnified by the developer. It could, of course, be the squeegee was too enthusiastic, which would be a shame given the drying mark.

Nonetheless...I like the actual shot, and I like the developer.

Moving the epoxy around the glass cloth with a rubber edged squeegee.

These are prints in progress of a commissioned project I'm working on. I'm making a print/art piece for a woman who is turning 70. The print will contain blueprints, photos and text about an historic house she grew up in on Lake Michigan. The house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright's brother. I have squeegeed a screen over watercolor washes and also two gocco printed background "washes". So far so good.

Hrrrrrmmmmpppphhh! ExCUSE me, but I'd like to set the record straight. I am the undisputed owner of the house, person, and all the food, and yes, even the catnip, although I can't seem to find any lately since my pet, the human, won't give it to me. (I DO get a tad grouchy with the peons when I have it. Sigh...)

My name is Squeegee. I don't have the brawn that Barrymore and Tigger have, so I make up for it with my cunning and ability to instigate. I haven't been able to figure out how to do that without getting bitten yet, but I think I've almost got it down. Another 12 years or so and I should be the master!

Anyway, don't let the others fool you. It's mine, I tell you; all MINE! I know you believe me, because who could look in these eyes and NOT believe?! Yup. I've still got it.
