Red sprites above the thunderstorms in the southeast Aegean Sea, as captured from the eastern suburbs of Athens, Greece and at a distance of 250-400km away, during the night of December 4, 2021.
“About Sprite Lightning”
Sprites are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high above thunderstorm clouds, or cumulonimbus, giving rise to a quite varied range of visual shapes flickering in the night sky. They are usually triggered by the discharges of positive lightning between an underlying thundercloud and the ground. Sprites appear as luminous reddish-orange flashes. They often occur in clusters above the troposphere at an altitude range of 50–90 km (31–56 mi).
Sprites are sometimes inaccurately called upper-atmospheric lightning. However, sprites are cold plasma phenomena that lack the hot channel temperatures of tropospheric lightning, so they are more akin to fluorescent tube discharges than to lightning discharges.
Summer time is best to capture this phenomenon and much more like galaxy’s ring and planets and I’m exploring and working on it, so wait and watch for more wonders.

Although there was no indication in people.ee.duke.edu/~cummer/cmc/new6 of sprite activity, a extremely active, continuous lightning display was occurring to my north from dusk through 11:30PM when more clouds moved into my area.
I was attempting to capture some pre-peak activity of the Perseids Meteor Shower, when this lightning storm appeared. In nearly two hours, a recorded at least 15 sprite events. These images are the better ones.
Used Nikon d7100, Nikkor 35mm f/1.4 @ f/2.8 (not f/5.6), iso 1600, and exposure of 10s. Photoshop was used to increase contrast and reduce some noise (grainness).

Blue Sprite is not widespread in Hong Kong but fairly common in Wetland Park. Thoraxes of the males are greenish-blue in colour with black stripes. It can be found around aquatic plants in streams and water ponds, and is commonly seen along the Stream Walk in Wetland Park during summer.
A modified 1996 spi Mini Sprite on the Cumbria Classic Minis owners club stand during the West Cumbria Vintage Club Rally at Hayes Castle Farm, Distington. Owned by Sam Drake, of Whitehaven, it was one of 12 Minis representing the club, which welcomes the owners of examples built between 1959 and 2000, at the 34th annual event.
