Who named this town, anyway?

The lovely breakfast spread at my Amsterdam B&B. There was also french pressed coffee. I got to breakfast 'late' the first day and there were no more seats so I had return at a later time. But when I returned later, all the other guests had left the table. :( So I was determined to be one of the first ones the next day. And by being one of the first ones, I got to take a picture of the spread before the other guests arrived. (Amsterdam, The Netherlands May 2010)

Phenax hirtus is a new, fast-spreading plant in the nettle family (Uriticaeae). It looks something like the native māmaki (Pipturus albidus). The plant has been discovered in the Kaloko Mauka area of Hawai'i Island and looks like it is becoming invasive. If sighted on Hawai'i Island, please contact the Big Island Invasive Species Committee www.biisc.org/report-a-pest-2/.

See www.biisc.org/phenax/ for more information.

Jag Jive Hogmanay Dance 2010

A rusting hulk outside Tilbury environment centre painted (from the factory) in the sickest shade of lime green one could imagine. During the 70s and 80s this machine was used to receive and spread coal on the extensive storage fields at Tilbury Power Station but after decommissioning was left to rust away for our pleasure.

This industrial monolith lists to the left rather like a whale on a beach, and seen as most of its superstructure is rusted to the point of collapse, is totally fucked. However behind identical spreaders carve up the coal fields, making a real racket as they flatten it, neaten it and prepare it for combustion. Basically a huge iron Ford Mondeo, this is truly and industrial beast.

There was a story today that Denmark had banned Marmite because it has added vitamins, which had the UK press in a mild uproar. It turns out to not be quite true www.thegrocer.co.uk/Articles.aspx?page=articles&ID=21...
