Messing with GIMP effects - split tone process

This a study exploring Spit Toning. Split toning is a technique that applies different colors to two ranges of tone in an image. This composition is made up of the same spool of thread, same color, but different photographs with different colors applied to the shadows and the highlights. The fisrt picture in the grid is the actual color, the last is a black & white with a hint of blue added.

A week ago, I went to a party at a friends house/ranch in celebration of Super Bowl XLVII. My friends own three horses and, while I was there, it was feeding time for the horses. So, I decided to walk out and try to take some interesting shots of the horses as they were eating. Now for those of you who know a lot about horses, you all know that it is extremely hard to get a horses attention during feeding time - they LOVE their food. I was popping off shots as they had their heads in the food buckets happily eating away. This is the shot that I liked the best. It is just a shot of the top forehead, forelock, and ears of the youngest horse whose name is Bonnie. This shot was originally black and white but, after a little bit of playing around with the image in the “develop” mode in Lightroom, I decided that the Split Tone effect worked the best for this image.

Split toned barn & tractor

b'cuz I like both shots but seemed redundant to post separately and I didn't really like how the color came out in original image so... ✔

Messing around with split toning

The original color image of this abandoned barn was not so interesting. Colors, contrast too harsh. Hence I turned it into a split tone image.

Thanks to Gavin Hoey for explaining the technique at
