The spiral galaxy NGC 5907, sometimes known as the "Splinter Galaxy" because of its unusual appearance, is located in the constellation Draco. It is fairly bright, and appears elongated because it has an edge-on alignment when viewed from Earth. It also has a strong set of dust lanes, visible in this image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope as red features. The central lane is so pronounced at visible light wavelengths, where it blocks our view of the starlight, that the galaxy was once mistaken for two objects and given two entries in the original New General Catalogue. The catalogue, published by J.L.E. Dreyer in 1888, was an attempt to collect a complete list of all nebulae and star clusters known at the time.

NGC 5907's special orientation and close proximity to Earth have made it a popular target for observation by both professional and amateur astronomers. Over the last decade, ever-improving infrared instrumentation have allowed scientists to detect light from the galaxy that was until now hidden by dust. Recent observations using Spitzer's InfraRed Array Camera at infrared wavelengths from 3-10 microns resulted in the discovery of a significant and potentially massive thick stellar disk. This is the first time that a thick disk has been detected and characterized in the infrared.

This image is composed of images obtained at four wavelengths: 3.6 microns (blue), 4.5 microns (green), 5.8 microns (orange) and 8 microns (red). The contribution from starlight has been subtracted from the 5.8 and 8 micron images to enhance the visibility of the dust features.

The first arrow to the left is a huge sliver/splinter I drove through my finger today while wiping down wood. The 2nd arrow is where in partially came out. The 3rd arrow is the result of Peel Away 1 getting on my skin and me not realizing what it was. It was a tiny pit melted into my skin and is now a big hard lump. Freaky.

paris catacombs.

This is the underbelly of a slide. The slide had a few small holes in it that allowed the bright sunlight above to beam through. It's amazing how light can make its way into and through small spaces. The phenomena of being in a dark room, then ever-so-slightly opening a curtain to let some light in; or light coming into a dark room from underneath a doorway in a lighted hallway.... this is amazing to me.

I took this photo while on a photo walk with Thomas Hawk, a special guest of Marc Silber. We were at the Peninsula School in Menlo Park, California.

Check out the show: www.silberstudios.tv/videos/thomas-hawk-photowalk You'll see Thomas Hawk sliding down this slide, taking pictures all along.

Wood, metal and glass collide. The aftermath of the destruction of my car by a vicious wind and ice storm, April 12th, 2013.

I loved the way that the broken glass looked. [fall '10]

One more photo of the Big Bear Geocaching Trip before I leave for Europe.

While sitting in the car waiting for the others, I saw this tall, splintered pine tree. There was no evidence of a lightening strike. We found it odd that such a mighty tree could just split and then exist in this condition. From where I was sitting, this must have been about 12 feet high at the top of the split.

Well, I'll be gone for a few weeks. I may or may not post while I'm gone, so I bid you all a nice weekend and next couple of weeks.

Empty.......empty beaches, something impossible to find in Florida, even with a hurricane on the way. But here in this remote area on the northwestern Pacific side of Panama, even on a 90 degree sun filled day, not hardly a soul was to be found. Well maybe two souls. I found two people on the beach, both American and from Destin, Florida..........what a small world.

Splinter is a 4-month old pitbull puppy who's under Give a Dog a Bone's care for a pending cruelty case. He has demodex and is in the isolation ward. Since the ward is empty except for him we let out for exercise, training and fun in the run.
