An old tree near Long Point, Sandy Bay Beach, Tasmania.

Finally got away for a week, to the south of England. We mainly visited old cathedrals and abbeys but did some exploration of the New Forest, the largest area of woodland in England about half way along the south coast. Stumbled across these trees on a hillside which I thought looked really dramatic. The one on the right seems to have been split in half by lightening. It was a grey, overcast day so done this in black and white, as best I can.

This big, old tree looked fine to the casual passerby, but the decision to cut it down was apparently justified, confirmed by the extensive rot seen in the cross section of the stump. But adjacent to that was this fascinating texture, highlighted by sunlight.

Intentional failure to see the big picture

A splintered tree, near a reservoir.

There was a boy,

Who had thought,

He would grow

Into a successful, wise, sincere,

Fulfilled, happy and respected man.

Yet he stayed but a useless boy.

No-one had thought to tell him:

Grown-ups are never grown up.

Perhaps if they had,

He wouldn’t have felt

Such a useless failure.

The shell of an old mill rots along a hydropower canal off the Shetucket River in Norwich, Ct. The bricklayers did a good job with this one: The walls stand mostly straight around deep piles of rubble that used to be the floors and roof.

Back in 2015 I briefly poked my head into the only intact building on this end of the complex, then poked it right back out. Nothing to see inside … except perhaps the rainbow bridge to eternity, should something give way above or below an unlucky photographer.

That said, there appeared to be no new collapses between 2015 and 2017.

Ice on Lammas Meadow, Walthamstow Marshes. It looks like the water level dropped before it could freeze to an adequate depth to walk on - other areas were much stronger, although still tempting fate.

Yesterday I did Splinter too, mostly because of Tenor Penny and Markus Ronge - thank you guys for the inspiration. And yes, I know Splinter looks a bit like Alf too :D Still, I'm very proud of his head :)))
