There really is no other way to describe this one other than getting lucky. Shooting while riding Splash is always a crapshot for me, and this time it worked out in my favor. I cannot wait to be there in 54 days!! Thanks for lookin', and have a great day!

WDW Photography December Photo Trip

Here's what I hope is a different take on this great scene from Splash Mountain. I dunno how, but I rode this three times and got the front each time without even asking. I just got lucky I guess!

Splash Mountain for as long as I can remember it has been a state of disrepair. Until this past trip that is... Wow what a difference this last refurb made. Everything was working great and looked wonderful. I just hope they keep it up. Enjoy this shot from the very newly refurbished Splash Mountain and thanks for looking.

*EDIT*

A quick rant. Nikon customer service is the absolute worst. Trying to get my 24-70 2.8 repaired has been an absolute nightmare. I approved and paid for my lens to be repaired and the status updated that I had approved. The next day Nikon changes their repair system online and now they can't find anything about my approval. I call yesterday, they tell me it can take an extra business day to show up their system and to call back today. I call back today, no change and they have the audacity to tell me to wait til tomorrow and if they don't show anything in their system then they'll take my payment again. Escalating to a supervisor did no good. So, an additional 3 days wasted, my initial payment disappeared into thin air and no closer to even getting my 24-70 into the shop let alone back to me. I love Nikon products but I hate their service. Every single time I have to deal with them it's a nightmare. Thanks for nothing Nikon.

Where's your Laughing Place? A very popular ride at Disneyland, Splash Mountain has been photographed thousands of times. I wanted to try something different with this shot, the day was bright and the skies were perfect. I opted to go with a bracketed HDR, and the vantage point would be from the queue line. I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by guests that did not mind waiting for me as I shot from different areas. To me this area was perfect, the rocks in the forefront gave me the image depth I wanted. Then I thought, having a log in the photo would even be better. I waited and was lucky enough to capture not one but two logs in the photo! Needless to say, this ended up being my Laughing Place!

Westernland

Tokyo Disneyland

There's a quiet area in the back of Westernland in Tokyo Disneyland that features a restaurant (The Lucky Nugget Cafe) and great river views like this. It's a bit like the awesome Hungry Bear in Disneyland's Critter Country in that its tucked away and on the water (Note: Tokyo Disneyland has a restaurant called Hungry Bear as well but it is completely different, focused on serving Japanese curry). Here the Lucky Nugget would be behind me, Westernland to the right, and Tom Sawyer Island across the water and to the left. I found both the Japanese Mark Twain Riverboat and especially Splash Mountain to be top notch. Tokyo's Splash Mountain is easily the definitive version of that attraction.

I've always shied away from what is considered dark ride photography. Not because I don't care for it, I actually find it to be one the most challenging types of "Disney" photography. I typically stay away from it because of the amount of sensor noise my camera makes at high ISO. I have a fairly new camera, the Sony A77 (equivalent in the line up to the D7000 or 7D), but I feel that Sony has crammed way too many megapixels (24) on this APS-C sensor. The result is some hefty noise after 1600 ISO and down right nasty snow after 3200 ISO. I took this photo at 1600 and F1.8. I've also applied quite a bit of nose reduction in Lightroom.

I've been a Sony Alpha shooter for years, but lately I've been feeling the tug to make the jump.

I was really excited to ride Splash Mountain this past trip as they had just finished renovating and man what a difference. Everything looked great and was working fantastic. Splash Mountain is finally back to it's original show quality. Let's just hope it stays that way. Thanks for looking everyone!

Once again, we are heading over to everybody's laughing place, Splash Mountain. I really enjoy when the sun is setting in the Magic Kingdom because it allows for some really nice photos. Most of the time you get these real nice orange or pink skies. Where is your favorite place to shoot a sunset in Walt Disney World? Have a great day!

Well when I said I was out of usable night shots to post I thought it was true. I tried editing this shot no less than a dozen times since we returned from our last Disney trip and they all ended with horrible results. This last time I abandoned trying to make an HDR work and focused on a single 30 second exposure. This was my result. Thanks for looking!

Technical: 1 shot, 9 adjustment layers.

P.S. View on large if you have time. It looks way better on a dark background.

the way i see her

It’s been quite some time since I looked at my Disneyland catalog and I realized I still have many untouched photos from that trip. So, I guess I’m going to start mixing some Disneyland back into my feed as I go through them again. I keep my Walt Disney World photos in a separate Lightroom Catalog from my Disneyland ones (I separate catalogs by locations) so I just need to remind myself to switch back and forth instead of always perusing the Walt Disney World one for new shots to edit.

BIG THUNDER THURSDAY!

In honour of Big Thunder Thursday Im posting this shot of…Splash Mountain.

Well a shot of Big Thunder Mountain would have been way too obvious, dontcha think?

I went back and forth on the flare. I liked it at first, then felt that it wasn’t clean or crisp enough to contribute to the shot so I took it out and cropped the light contamination on the upper left. Then I felt the shot was lacking so I put it back in.

Ultimately I think it’s just kind of an odd angle of Splash but I liked the sky and the colours.

And now I’m wondering about losing the flare again, LOL.

Yes I do take pictures while on rides. And no I wasn't worried about my camera getting wet. It's Splash Proof. Taken on Splash Mountain.

I love these little signs in the queue for Splash Mountain, my favorite attraction in the Magic Kingdom, especially after its lengthy refurbishment that fixed all the effects and brought the attraction back up to speed. Thanks for looking!

Splash Mountain is one of my favorite rides and one of the reasons is it is a great blend of a fun ride with a great story... in my opinion most of the rides at Disney either are a "fun ride" where the focus is the ride itself and the story takes a back seat (for example Space Mountain) or the ride itself isn't anything special but it has a great story/expierance (Fantasyland Dark Rides, Haunted Mansion, PotC, etc)... Splash is one of the best at balancing those two and provides both a fun ride and a great story/expierance.

As a photographer splash has been somewhat frustrating... while it seems like it is much brighter than rides like Peter Pan's Flight and Pirates it can still be pretty difficult to photograph and I end up with few pictures I am really happy with. I have taken many pictures of this scene but have never really had one that I thought was a great picture... I think this one has to be my best so far... it still could be better... but compared to lots of others... I am pretty happy with it :)

Just another beautiful (but miserably hot) sunset over the Rivers of America.

This was shot on a really fun evening with lots of flickr friends, Gregg Cooper, WJ McIntosh, Cory & Kory, Dan & Patti who were all there celebrating Justin's birthday (even though I never saw him). I was also there with good friends Larry & Rebecca who are nice enough to pose for me in all the crazy things that I want to photograph with them. And they never complain!

Every trip to Disney World thousands of photos. Of these probably 30-40% are dark ride photos. For some reason though I end up sharing very few of them so I keep asking myself why I'm even bothering to shoot all those photos if I'm never going to share them. Well I'm going to try and change that. I'm going back through multiple trips of shots and finding some of my favorite unprocessed dark ride shots to share. I've got literally hundreds if not thousands that have never even been touched.

This was shot with the Nikon D810 and Sigma 24 1.4. I had heard great things about this lens unfortunately I was using a rental and my experience was less than stellar. I had focusing issues throughout the trip that made me have a much higher throw away count than usual for my dark ride shots. This was even after calibrating the lens with the Sigma dock. I'm sure I just got a bad copy from the rental company but it left a bad taste in my mouth for Sigma lenses and now I will probably only stick with the first party Nikon lenses in the future. Editing was very straight forward with some Nik Color Efex Pro Contrast along with some denoising in the shadows area. I made some saturation adjustments and sharpened the photo to finish it off.

As you can see by another clouds tone mapped shot, this day was not the best for shooting because the clouds made everything look gloomy. Although they do look awesome when tone mapped, Disney isn't supposed to be gloomy. It's supposed to be the Happiest Place on Earth!

Thanks for viewing and have a magical day!

I think I have a new friend in the LAB color technique in Adobe CS3. I tried and tried to make it work over the weekend only to find I was using the wrong technique. I love color, I love the pop effect. LAB Color... I believe this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

If I ever wanted to party on a riverboat, I think this is the boat on which I would most want to party. The various "Brer Animals" on the boat look like they're having such a good time, singing and dancing.

A late night troll-free visit into the Magic Kingdom, no rides but a good three hours to explore the opportunities with the camera and managed to nail this shot of Splash Mountain. My other targets just didn't work out as well as this, very pleased with this HDR shot. The ride was actually broken as I took the exposures for this shot, you can see the boats stacking under the roof left of the mountain - that probably helped to get the shot right because the flash from the ride photograph down the drop would have made getting the exposures right even trickier.

Every second of every minute of every day puts me that much closer to being back at Tokyo Disneyland in February.

up front and in your face!

yes I've dared where 'very' few have dared before. I took my poor ol Nikon DSLR aboard a ride that can very easily end its life...and the life of the Tokina lens attached to it, but I was in an adventurous mood and I was trying to get something a heck of a lot more up close than the usual fare. So I braved it and hopped on this log flume hoping for the best. and yes, the camera did get a couple of drops...but the lens came out pretty clear (even more so as I cleaned the crap out of it right after) and it survived..you just have to know when you can hide it under..I've been on this ride so many times that I know when its a good time and when its time to duck and cover.

this was the last shot I took right before the water cannon shot up...boy did I react with split second reflexes and an 'oh shit!' to boot. fun times haha!

My oh my what a wonderful night. I had to shoot this location 2 times. The 1st time I forgot to set my ISO at 100 and when bracketing it just changed the ISO for different exposures. I didn't realize this until I got clear across the park to Space Mountain. Luckily I found this out before I went back to the hotel for the night and I was able to go back and take the image correctly.

...intentionally underexposed in post processing to attempt to accentuate the natural lighting that caught my eye while framing this shot.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you're having a great day!

All I can say to everyone is be nice. This shot took me forever to get the colors right and I'm still not even 100% happy with the outcome. Splash Mountain in WDW was not built with the photographers in mind.

When Ryan and I were shooting this night we were planning on shooting from straight on here, but the water canon and the breeze blowing east made that not possible.

I finally decided to try and shoot on Splash Mountain. I brought a large plastic bag to pop my camera into during any time it may get wet and it worked great! Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Sometimes it's a winter-y day, sometimes it's a summer day. But at the bottom of Splash Mountain, it's always a Golden Day with these three fellows leading everyone to a blissful rendition of "The Song of the South".
