I took this photo of what I'll call the spindle for an anchor chain at the Marquette Maritime Museum. You can see the water levels by the different colors there in the background.
This was my first spindle full of yarn. It ended up in this yarn: www.flickr.com/photos/kidandkid/7693194946/in/photostream

My first spindle plied yarn! :) 90 yards bulky weight. I love this plying spindle, and the half-hitch works well, especially after adding a rubber band on the shaft to help keep it from slipping. Maybe with more experience I won't need the rubber band, but for now it removed all frustration with dropping it.
Greensleeves, 40 grams (1.4 oz) **$40**
Unknown woods, but there are two kinds. I think it is the Anne Boleyn model, which is redwood burl and bloodwood.

shaft: 7.5"

This is my first attempt at making a supported spindle. It's about nine inches long and made of a while cherry tree that came down in a storm a few years ago. The stone is fossilized coral.
After using it some I've made some adjustments. Thinned down the shaft some, made the point sharper and straightened the bottom bit. No photo of the improved spindle yet. I'll get around to it some day. :D
Purchased from Threadsthrutime on etsy. 6 1/2" shaft, 4" arms, weight 1.4oz/39g. Bloodwood shaft, Honduran Rosewood arms. Comparable in size to a Jenkins Turkish Delight but with a slightly longer shaft (by about an inch).
Purchased from / made by Butterfly Girl Designs, in her Etsy Shop. I switched out the shafts on these two, and like them better that way.
This one is totally my spindle, as anyone who knows me will guess immediately. I love owls! I will make more like this, though, I'm sure. I've spun on it already (see the sunset/gryffindor yarn), and it actually will spin pretty fine, so I'm really pleased with it.
Sweet Gum Spindle 2 - bottom side view. The wood came from a tree branch that fell in my neighborhood. I kicked off a branch and turned out some spindle whorls from a burly section.
