This is my current spindle drive with its' three belts and multiple idler pulleys. Buried in the frame in the back corner is the spindle drive motor - it's a whopping 60 watt motor. It's fine for an engraver, but I use it as a CNC mill/router. That motor's gotta go, I've got a 1Hp Bosch trim router that is just waiting to take the place of the original spindle. The last thing the original spindle will do is machine its' replacement.

My class spindle purchased during lessons with Diane Mulholland. Spindle is made from Cherry - not sure what wood the shaft is made from.

I handmade these for Mom. Last time I visited, she was fascinated by my spindle, and said maybe she'd like to try it. But I'd brought my spendy one with me, and when she asked what it had cost me I think my answer put her off. So I decided to make her a few spindles from cheap supplies, to show her it could be done, and to give her something guilt-free to experiment with.

Unknown woods, but there are two kinds. I think it is the Anne Boleyn model, which is redwood burl and bloodwood.

Despite it's compact size, this spindle weighs a whopping 2 ounces. I'm loving how this spindle seems to spin forever and ever. On the spindle is grey Shetland, from Spunky Eclectic. Of all the fibers I've tried so far, I think I'm liking Shetland the best. It has a really classic, sturdy feel to it.

Sweet Gum Spindle 1 - bottom side view. The wood came from a tree branch that fell in my neighborhood. I kicked off a branch and turned out some spindle whorls from a burly section.

The wonderful orange fruit bursting from the bright pink cases are one of those colourful Autumn sights I look for.

in the photo, it looks like there is a line on the shaft where the wood is darker, but that isn't the case in person. I think it is there because the spindle is thicker there and the light is reflected differently by the wood in that layer of the grain.
