Having photographed the cascade of pink leaves earlier in the week, someone on facebook identified this plant as a spindle (euonymus europaea) and I confirmed it this morning by finding these fruit.
The wood is apparently very hard, which made it ideal for making wool spinning spindles, hence the common name.

Believed to be Euonymus europaeus, a British native tree. Has unusual shaped berries that are attractive to birds. Some interesting old herbal information can be found here. Whisby Nature Park, Lincolnshire, UK.
Spindle berries. The old lady who used to own the steep rough bit of land laughingly known as our garden told me that the spindle tree grows here. By dint of cutting most other things right back, and the spindles back quite a lot, I sometimes get a good Autumn show of these lovely pinky red things. The actual berries are deep yellow, and buried inside the "Cardinals' Hats".

My first temari-learner's ball- not bad but I did not cover the ball with enough string before starting the spindles. I am not close to another temari person so my learning has been long distance and books.
The commemorative plaque. Hopefully this is legible. They've tried to rid the world of this amazing monument: www.savethespindle.com/. David Bermant was the commissioner of the sculpture and partial partner in the development of Cermak Plaza where it resides. Judy Baar Topinka has said that the Spindle was the "pipe dream of a gentleman who felt he could impose his taste in art on others." What a bitch.
East Indian Rosewood is the gorgeous wood used to craft the whorl on this Tibetan support spindle. The shaft is Cocobolo.
