For Looking Close…on Friday, a view of my spice rack. Nothing fancy, I’ve had this spice rack for over 50 years. Of course, the spices themselves are much more current than the rack! Many spice containers have come and gone in those years! 😀🌶

Nicknamed "The Spice Bears," these 3 North American Black Bears, now 7 years old, were rescued from Alaska after their mother was lost in a human-wildlife conflict. Seen at the Greater Vancouver Zoo in Aldergrove, British Columbia. (24-02-16-0800

Although they are called Black Bears, their colour can be various shades of brown, reddish-brown, black, or even white, as seen in the Kermode bear of coastal British Columbia.

Spice Finches, also known as Nutmeg Mannikins, are widely distributed throughout India, Southern Asia, Ceylon, and Malaysia.

Spice Finches reach a size of 4 3/4" (12 cm). They have a bluish-black bill. The head, throat, and neck are a chestnut brown, going into a chocolate brown on the top and sides of the neck, and usually darker on the head. The under parts are a whitish buff. The breast and sides are a brown with a dark brown scalloped edging to the feathers.

The Spice Finch gather in small groups in the wild. They are very peaceful and sometimes their groups will be mixed with a variety of other small birds. Spice Finches are very hardy and dealers in India have been known to dye this little bird different colors, especially green, and offer them for sale as "painted finches". This must not be confused with the real Painted Finch(Emblema picta)! This information was taken fromhttp://animal-world.com

Taken at old Portsmouth

Some spices from different countries, Black pepper from Kampot, Cambodia, Flower of salt from Castro Marin , Portugal, Anise from Egypt, Oregano from Sardegna. All those spices were bought there !

Originally, the term “spices” was understood to mean the natural parts of a type of plant which, because of their special aroma, are used as a flavor-enhancing addition to food. Spices can be obtained from roots, onions, bark, leaves, herbs, flowers, fruits or seeds.

It was market day in the storybook village of Lourmarin in the Luberon region of Provence, France so I snapped away at the colorful tables of spices and herbs.

#MacroMondays

#Seeds

The nearby Asian grocery store sells delicious fresh black pepper (so it's still soft and green, with a floral taste), and I wondered if peppercorns (thinking of the shrivelled black peppercorns) really are seeds. During my research, I learned that the dried fruit of Piper nigrum technically isn't a seed anymore because one can't grow pepper with it. But one could do so with the fresh green peppercorns. These aren't the same as what we know as "green pepper" because for that, the unripe (unripe as a plant, but already ripe to eat) peppercorns are freeze-dried or cured in a salty brine to preserve the green colour. The actual seed is the white pit or "stone" (not sure what the correct term is) that you can find when you crack the soft green outer "shell" of the still unripe peppercorn open. That white seed is, processed from the ripened peppercorns (red in colour), what we know as "white pepper".

So I carefully scratched a fresh peppercorn with a sharp knife and then gently peeled a little bit of the green outer shell off the white seed. To get as close as possible, I used the extension tubes and the Raynox DCR-250 close-up lens. As usual, focusing with this setup was a little tricky. At first, I almost immediately had the peppercorn in focus, but later on, the camera really struggled a lot, the lenses' motor pumped back and forth, and manual focusing wasn't any easier. I should use the extension tubes more often. Or finally get the Laowa 2x Ultra macro (GAS, anyone?).

Setup: I know this would have looked good against black, but this is what I do most of the time, so once again I used the small matte, gold-coloured piece of cardboard as backdrop to achieve a softer, lighter look. One might call this a "mid-key" setup ;). Lights used were a natural light photo lamp from above and two LED lights from the left and the right. I also used a green bottle as colour filter which I put in front of the right LED to highlight the fresh green colour of the peppercorn's outer shell.

HMM, Everyone, and have a great week ahead!
