40166 speeds through Llandudno Junction on 29th August 1980 with the 1246 Holyhead to Euston service.

I think this may well be another one of Alan Knight's shots that I have in my possession. A cracking photo but a pity the image isn't better - it's a scan off a damaged print, however it's still worth putting up here of a long gone scene on the North Wales coast. This was occasionally a 40 and I think was non-stop from Holyhead to Chester after it had connected with the boat from Dublin.

After the cropped shot, here is a full size shot of the train seen in the previous image, but nearer.

Retro car racing. MG MGB. Year 1970.

I got in a bit of a hurry heading home and never even looked at my speedometer until I noticed him make a quick u-turn behind me. I would like to publicly thank my wife for not telling the officer, "He always drives this fast when he's been drinking!"

While attending the annual Railroad Days model railroad, toy, & antique tractor fair at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, IL, word came in that the Norfolk Southern 8100, the Nickel Plate heritage unit, was leading an empty oil train up the BNSF Brookfield Sub on its way to Galesburg. With not much hesitation, we went out looking for it.

With 8100 on the move, we chased it north of Galesburg. Here it crosses the gravel Knox Road 2000 N.

On the 27th May 2019 the container ship 'Titan' (2016, 153,500DWT) heads down the English Channel whilst heading from Rotterdam to the Suez Canal.

The vessel is 369m long and with a capacity of 14,000 containers is relatively small today. Built by Samsung Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries the ship is operated by Costamare Shipping. This is about as close as big ships get crossing in the Channel.

Speeding through Old Square in Birmingham is West Midlands Travel MCW D912 NDA in shiny silver Timesaver livery, 2912 is working the 963 service to Gannow. The bus is passing Lewis's store, at that time much in need of a clean, it got cleaned when it was re-used and refurbished. In the present day Old Square 2912 would be about where the Tony Hancock sculpture is now situated.

Getting a sharp shot of Chili running is seriously difficult - he's much faster than my autofocus. Here we were playing a game with him on a path near our house. I was lying on the floor on my stomach about 50m away from Jessi to get this shot. Jessi occupied him while I set up the camera and focus. When I was ready, I called him and as you can see, he came flying towards me while I fired a couple of bursts off. We had to repeat the excercise about 5 times to get a good one.

I take photos for fun and for my business blog (Say No! to the Office), food company website (The Tapas Lunch Company) and Spanish food portal (Spanish Food World).

A vision that won't be with us for much longer. A FGW Class 43 HST is seen at speed as it passes parallel with the MNLPS support coach at Reading station.

HMS Ardent, a Type 21-class frigate, at sea in the Gulf of Oman during the Royal Navy's first full Operation Armilla deployment in 1980-81. I took this from the ship's own Lynx helicopter as we returned after a sortie. A member of the ship's standing sea fire party (wearing his red surcoat) can be seen on the focsle and a member of the flight-deck team can be seen aft.

The Type 21 frigate or Amazon class frigate was a Royal Navy general-purpose escort designed by Yarrows in the late 1960s, built in the 1970s and that served throughout the 1980s into the 1990s. The class was designed to fulfil a requirement for a relatively cheap yet modern general-purpose escort vessel to fill a projected gap in the number of escort hulls in the fleet. The unmistakably yacht-like and rakish lines were indicative of their commercial design. Their handsome looks combined with their impressive handling and acceleration lent itself to the class nickname of Porsches. The design was partially funded by the Royal Australian Navy who had originally intended to buy five vessels, but in the event did not purchase any.

The first of the eight built, HMS Amazon, entered service in May 1974. They were the first design to enter Royal Navy service which used solely gas-turbine propulsion, as opposed to the steam turbines or diesel engines of their predecessors. The design made use of large amounts of aluminium alloy in the superstructure to lower topweight but worries later surfaced about resilience to fire, particularly following a major fire aboard Amazon in 1977.

As originally built, the design made use of a lot of 'off the shelf' technology, such as the Sea Cat missile, the Wasp ASW helicopter and marinised Rolls-Royce aircraft engines. Yet it also featured modern electronics such as the CAAIS (Computer Assisted Action Information System) system to integrate the ship's weapons and sensor systems and provide the crew with all the relevant information they required to fight the ship, as and when they needed it. The Wasp was replaced by the vastly more capable multi-mission Westland Lynx. Ship-launched ASW torpedoes were also fitted.

All of the class except Amazon, took part in the Falklands War of 1982 and two were lost - Ardent and Antelope. They were heavily involved, performing extensive shore-bombardment missions and providing ASW and AAW duties for the task force. The remaining members of the class were sold to Pakistan in the early 1990s.

The white nose is not part of the normal livery. Since these trains are just re-pained french TGVs, I think the front panel has been replaced with one from a TGV, hence the light grey colour with a navy blue stripe.
