This was my first time visiting this famous location and it far exceeded my expectation. There are so many special shots available along this stretch of the Snake River. I worked as fast as I could to take advantage of the excellent soft morning light but still took time to have a seat on a near by bench and just take in the grandeur of this location. Since the park roads had just opened a few days earlier I had the whole place to myself for most of the morning.

I' m not a winter person.
It is snowing now, though hardly a blizzard. The ground is mostly covered, but still teases that it might now be permanent. Ha!
I may, sometime soon, actually go out and photograph snow and ice...but not today. So I offer this winter scene from the past...Looking out my front door.
About 3 or 4 miles south of where I live is a little road side summer campground. It is locally known as Frog Gap located on a farmers field where summer campers have the privilege of literally camping just across the fence from the cow's pasture. At the base of the trees in the background you can see the fire pits as well as the barb wire fence that separates the campers from the cow pasture.

I've seen a number of Little Blue Herons over the years (not to be confused with a normal Blue Heron...different species), and I always find them so pretty, especially when they're in their full blue phase as seen here. The color is just such a stunning mix of blues and purples. When I saw this one perched up on a tree at Green Cay Wetlands in Florida last week with a variety of differently colored trees behind it, I knew I could set up a special shot. The distance from the bird to the background tree line was enough that I could really get a nice bokeh, and thankfully, the boardwalk in this area was almost eye height with the heron. I ended up finding multiple angles leading to number of very colorful backdrops, but this was one of my favorites. Photography, while often about looking for pretty subjects, can also be just as much about looking for something equally as beautiful to put behind or around your subject.

Every year as I made a calendar of my photography I made a special shot for the cover. This was one a few years back - taken when I was living in Shinyokohama. You can see the Nissan Stadium (where they had the finals to the 2002 World Cup) and Mt Fuji in the background. It was tough coming up with all those ideas but looking back, wish I had changed more than just my hat for each pose.

Back in 2015 Frank and John and I met up in Arizona copper country. After two days of railfanning the Copper Basin we headed down to San Manuel on good authority that the SMARRCO would be running a train up to the interchange. We were there early and the train was on duty and out a bit after 0900 for its two hour northbound journey. After chasing it all the way north to the interchange we watched them exchange loaded hoppers for empties and then got them at a couple spots headed back south. Here they are just having departed the Hayden interchange as they approach the yard limit board and the North Cam Rio grade crossing. The rear of the train is just coming off the south end of the 1000 ft long Gila River Bridge. The colorful striations of the massive tailings pile from the ASARCO's Hayden copper concentrator and smelter complex
These are special shots for me as the SMA was a railroad I always wanted to shoot, but then it shut down before I ever had the opportunity to visot. I was drawn to it after seeing photos in one of my very first issues of Trains Magazine when I was a young fan. After shutting down in 1999 with the closing of the giant underground San Manuel Copper mine the future looked bleak when the smelter was demolished and the mine haul railroad was scrapped.
I thought I'd never get to see it and my opportunities to admire it would be confined to books like my love of the New Haven and the Milwaukee. But, by a miraculous twist of fate the line was reborn in 2013 to once again hall copper ore. Given the fickle nature of global commodities it turned out that its second life was pretty fleeting. I read that the railroad shut down again in January 2016 by then owner Capstone Mining and most if not all of the equipment has been shipped out. I feel pretty fortunate to have had this opportunity and who knows if the SMARRCO will get a third life?

These were not severe storms. In fact it was about 100F and humid. Normal for us here this time of year. We were right on the edge of a passing front. Day 3 of 3 for storms in south central Nebraska.
These small spurts of cells were trying to form, and one did eventually, but wasn't able to catch up or get into position to get that special shot. There were a few good captures from this day but not many.

The temps rose enough to let the chickens out of the coop. Not afraid of the snow, they enjoyed running around flapping their wings and scratching in the plowed driveway. I am sure they are happier when foraging is better, but they sure seem to enjoy being outside now.

Teeen days. And still it works pretty well, I guess. Of course that's not a special shot, but I'm in love with the colours. Didn't want to annoy my furball again, and the weather was nice for about 30 minutes, so I went out aaand came straight back again because the sky turned grey. ) : Autumn is my favourite season, the real (!) autumn with those amazing colours, not the grey and dark autumn.

There are six different species of flamingo. The greater flamingo has the widest distribution of them all. Flamingos are found in wetland habitats; on coastal lagoons, mud flats and inland at large shallow lakes which may be very saline (salty) or highly alkaline (caustic, high pH). Flamingos stand up to 150 cm high, on long legs. The head is a peculiar shape - and when feeding, the bill is placed in the water upside down. Flamingos are gregarious birds, living in groups called flocks or 'stands' numbering from a few individuals to tens of thousands. Whether feeding or nesting they remain closely packed together. Pairs are monogamous - they stay together for life.
I have found out that there are flamingos freely living in Kuwait some time ago, unfortunately I didnt get a chance to capture the view till now. I know that this is not particularly special shot as it was taken in the middle of the day but I post it anyway just to show that there is more to Kuwait than a person would think. As for the timing - We had no other choice that day because you can capture these beautiful birds when the tide is high and they are close to the shore. High tide was after 11AM which is not the optimum time for photography anywhere, and especially not under the bright hot arabian sun. This shot is a resize of 50% crop as I only had 70-200mm lens with me and it was not enough. I will watch the tide movements from now on to go there in better time of a day.

A prayer wheel is a cylindrical "wheel" on a spindle made from metal, wood, stone, leather or coarse cotton. Traditionally, the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum is written in Sanskrit on the outside of the wheel. Also sometimes depicted are Dakinis, Protectors and very often the 8 auspicious symbols Ashtamangala. According to the Tibetan Buddhist tradition based on the lineage texts regarding prayer wheels, spinning such a wheel will have much the same meritorious effect as orally reciting the prayers.

The absence of light can be just as interesting as its presence. Here, I was playing with a dark corner of Upper Antelope Canyon, which was only partially lit from the sun above this amazing place. The rock formation, with beautiful, almost sensual curves accented by the magnificent shadows... it was as if it spoke to me. I knew this would be a special shot, even out of a series of many beautiful shots. This shot is unique within a place that is unique in its own right.
