First of all, apologies for not having been around. I’ve been following his example of staring into the distance and striving for a complete state of comatose oblivion. And obviously, this worked rather well for me and him. Even though I recently picked up the camera again, did not really find anything worthwhile to record. My lack of motivation was and is a contributing factor.
Merry Christmas to all of you and having the best of intentions to post some more. Same as last year, I still dislike Christmas songs intensely, so I am using this one as an alternate.

Gerhard Richter exhibition, Folkwang Museum Essen
Gerhard Richter fertigte die 48 Portraits für den deutschen Pavillon der Venedig Biennale im Jahr 1972 an. Für den Hauptraum des Pavillons schafft Gerhard Richter 48 einzelne Portraits historischer Persönlichkeiten: Schriftsteller, Wissenschaftler, Komponisten und Philosophen finden sich darunter; Politiker und Künstler sind hingegen nicht vertreten. Neben einigen weniger bekannten Personen, zählen Franz Kafka, Thomas Mann, Albert Einstein und Oscar Wilde zu den berühmtesten.
Bei den 48 Portraits handelt es sich ausschließlich um männliche, weiße Mitteleuropäer und Amerikaner, die zwischen 1824 und 1904 geboren wurden. Richter wählte diese aus 270 Portraitfotos aus, die er Enzyklopädien und Lexika entnahm und in seinem Atlas [Tafeln: 30 bis 41] sammelte.
Die Gemälde sind direkt nach den Fotovorlagen im Atlas entstanden, wobei die Wahl eines einheitlichen Bildformats (70 x 55 cm) und formal ähnlicher Vorlagen die Uniformität in den Vordergrund rücken. Auch die Verwendung von Graustufen und eine weiche Umsetzung der Gesichter, die kaum Falten oder Unebenheiten zeigen, lassen die Bilder als homogene Einheit erscheinen.
Häufig wird versucht, die 48 Portraits in Bezug auf Richters persönliche Geschichte und Vorstellungen zu deuten. Die Individualiät der Dargestellten scheint für Richter allerdings eine untergeordnete Rolle zu spielen, da er durch die malerische Umsetzung eine Homogenisierung vornahm: „Mich interessiert die sprachlose Sprache dieser Bilder: Köpfe, obwohl voll von Literatur und Philosophie, werden ganz unliterarisch, die Literatur wird aufgehoben, die Persönlichkeiten werden anonym. Darum geht es mir.“
Der deutsche Pavillon auf der Biennale in Venedig wurde im Jahr 1938 umgebaut und spiegelt daher die Architektur des nationalsozialistischen Deutschlands wider. Im Rahmen dieser schmucklosen und monumentalen Architektur ruft die Wahl der Gattung des Portraits Assoziationen zu Herrscherbildnissen in totalitären Regimen hervor. Die Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Portraits jedoch sowie der Verzicht auf Abbildungen von Politikern stehen dem entgegen. Architektur und Bildzyklus scheinen sich somit gegenseitig zu ergänzen.
Die Tatsache, dass keine Frauen in die Serie der 48 Portraits aufgenommen wurden, führte zu vielen Spekulationen. Im Nachhinein erklärt Richter selbst diesen Sachverhalt wie folgt: „Viel eher würde ich das Vaterproblem sehen können. Und das ist ja auch ein typisch deutsches Nachkriegsproblem, dass die Väter fehlten, in vielerlei Hinsicht, also ganz weg waren, oder beschädigt waren, auf jeden Fall ihren Status, ihren Wert verloren hatten. Das erzeugt eine Unruhe und eine Unsicherheit, die sicherlich dazu beitrug, dass ich die 48 Männer malte.“
Die Werkgruppe der 48 Portraits lässt keine Rückschlüsse auf Richters persönliche Wertschätzung für bestimmte Personen zu: „(…) ich wollte keine Ideologie, kein Thema nahelegen. Ich wollte reine, ideologisch undeutbare Bilder“ kommentiert Gerhard Richter. Dennoch ist die Arbeit im Zusammenhang mit ihrer Entstehungszeit und mit dem Ort, für den sie entstanden ist, zu sehen und ist somit unweigerlich mit der Geschichte des Künstlers verwoben.

Looking Close... on Friday! theme Round in Vertical Photo
It's back to bubble time! I particularly liked the subtlety of this bubble caught on some moss. It looks quite space agey, it’s also looks like it’s on life support, or perhaps it’s a new method for harvesting oxygen?
I tried out some new ideas for the theme but disappointment and a lack of time meant that I had to ditch the project ...for now.
