This patch of bare rock is at Scoville Point on Isle Royale's eastern end. This was my favorite spot on the island, and is one of my top five favorite spots on the planet. I really loved it here. But the bareness of this point embodies a particular fear of the National Park Service, as the predator-prey study of the island's wolves and moose reaches its final conclusion. Long story short: the prey wins.
I saw an article some time last week about the Isle Royale wolves that showed just how dire things had gotten. (Here it is if you want to take a look.) Lake Superior finally got a couple of good years of ice, but that wasn't enough to entice any new wolves onto the island. Things went the other way, in fact, as one of the wolves left (and was promptly shot by some Ontarian, because people are idiots). This left three wolves on the island at the start of this winter. There was very little ice this year, and now the scientists say the number of wolves has dropped to just two. This means it's too late for the National Park Service to introduce new wolves so that this genetic line can recover. They can introduce new wolves if they want, but it would be a completely new pack without any of the genetic adaptations the Isle Royale wolves have made over the last 70 years. The new pack would likely just kill the two wolves that are left rather than incorporating them into their group. The line of Isle Royale wolves descended from that single female and two males who crossed over in 1940 is done.
This still leaves the question of what to do about the moose, whose only control now will be disease, weather, and limitations on their food supply. Wolf numbers fell too low around the time I took this picture to provide any real control on moose numbers, and the moose population has been growing steadily. The Park Service expects this to once more decimate the island's vegetation, and it may very well lead to deforestation. The fir forests are already stressed by the effect of climate change. An explosion of moose could be a nail in a fir coffin.
So the park service really has just two options. It can bring a new batch of wolves to the island, or it can leave it be and let the moose do what they will.

A quick solution to the problem of my wonderful FIL's overestimation of the size of our dining table (and hence gifting me a too-large cutting mat, which then resulted in my using it on the floor, and I am too old for that)... one $16.99 piece of plywood (or something like that) from Home Depot, with three cuts (done at the store for a few cents each) to make two 3x3 squares. Voila! I can fairly easily carry each square up and down the stairs, and now I can use the cutting mat on the table! Still a temporary solution, since the table is not exactly the right height, but a lot better than sitting on the floor, bruising my knees and making my back ache. He's a genius, that husband of mine (it was all his idea).

This is my solution to the new gearbox mount problem, hack the doughnut down to a D shape. I've also notched the top a little as it was still fouling a plastic cover under the output shaft.
I'll have to hammerite the exposed bits bit I think by sticking with the 80mm doughnut and just losing the overhang I'll retain good lateral stability which is where the biggest force will be both from the torque down the prop shaft and the G force on hard cornering
