A 1980s view in the typically dingy back streets of Lhasa. Solid housing, but they must be freezing in the long Tibetan winter.
This was in the vicinity of the Jokhang Temple, and so I guess it still exists, although a glimpse at Google maps shows an explosion of development in the city. Gone are the peaceful almost rural walks down by the Lhasa River with the Potala Palace dominating the skyline, and I see some of the outlying temples have been virtually engulfed by the urban sprawl.

The Original Perch Rock
Perch Rock, New Brighton Lighthouse, sits next to the fort, it was originally, a wooden "Perch", hence its name. A large post held a light on top and was supported by a sort of tripod. It was erected on the Black Rock in 1683 by the Liverpool Corporation.
When foreign ships, passed the old perch, they were charged sixpence for its respect and to keep it in repair. But it was often washed away and a boat had to be launched to recover it from Bootle Bay. In February 1821, the pilot boat "Liver" crashed into the perch and carried it away. It has been said that it was washed away in March 1824 and not recovered until the December.
However the cost of replacing it all the time grew too expensive and it was decided to build a new one.
Construction of the Lighthouse
The foundation stone of the new lighthouse was laid on 8th June 1827 by Thomas Littledale, Mayor of Liverpool. It was designed on the lines of Eddystone by Mr. Foster and built of marble rock from Anglesey by Tomkinson & Company. It rises 90 feet above the rocks and is considered to be a masterpiece of craftsmanship. The granite cost 1/6d a cubic foot.
Each piece of stone is interlocked into the next. The whole stonework, when finished , was coated with what is known as "Puzzellani" a volcanic substance from Mount Etna which, with age, becomes rock hard. The first 45 feet is solid. A spiral staircase leads to where the keeper lived and then on to the lantern house. The revolving light was said to be the first in the country. It cost £27,500 to construct.
The Lighthouse In Use
Work was only possible at low tide and it was not completed until 1830. Its first light shone on the 1st March of that yea and consisted of two white flashes, followed by one red, with a range of 14 miles. The light was 77 feet above the half-tide level. It was eventually electrically connected to the mainland.
The Lighthouse last shone its light on 1st October 1973 as it was no longer needed on account of the radar system operating in the River.

Pattern is called Dancing Ribbons.
The ribbon center is paper pieced.There are 18 sections with 16 pieces each!
Made one of these for myself and loved it so much I had to share. I used only solids and Kona white. I quilting circles out from the center. Can't wait to send it to its new home!
Dense ice has encroached upon the entire surface of this pond, now thick enough to walk on, at lease around the margins. The greenish color is caused by it's density, containing very little trapped air within it's structure.
Golden evening sun hits the Night Gas right on the nose as they roll through Eddy after holding the main for a meet.
In Japan there are different sizes available. They sale the small, medium & large versions. In Japan they are actually Solid Markers. There is no hole in the middle where you crank it up. The Japanese versions have removable sections so that you do not have deal with twisting them to get a writable surface. You can see on the large version these removable sections.
Snapped this old solider on Remembrance Sunday 6 years ago, still one of my favourite images ever. A gentleman and a hero.

It is the American Thanksgiving Holiday today and I wish all my American Family members and Friends a wonderful weekend. This holiday takes place every 4th Thursday in November and is a very large holiday with many families getting together. Airlines are booked solidly for this weekend holiday, sometimes for months ahead. In the US it is often a bigger celebration even than Christmas.
NB: Canadians celebrated their Thanksgiving on the First Monday in October. It is always confusing and it would be nice if we had the holiday on the same day. Thanks to all for your good wishes; I have family in the USA so it is appreciated.
