Annnnd there was no power for the rest of the party. We survived on sunlight borrowed from the state of Maryland a full month ago. Camping lights that were already charged! These things are $5 a pop. We ordered 10 more after the party.

BACKSTORY: 9/30: Rainbow Party #3: Yellow: The No Evite Late-Nite-BDSM Experiment: 21 people: Clint & Carolyn, Dave, Jess, Akira, Puppy, Svetlana, Paul & Katina, Evan, Wolf & Callan, Christi, Javier, Celia & Ben & Jeremy, Melisse, Sideshow Bob, Lisa, Alex. 7:30PM start time, but it took quite awhile before Svetlana showed up, and quite a bit longer (midnight) before the majority of the guests arrived. Clint's turmeric-dyed pants matched the yellow All shirt quite well. 4-5 Simpsons episodes playing at once, in tribute of yellow. Svetlana assembled the glow-in-the-dark triceratops; Wolfie assembled the human skeleton. The $~2 yardsale bowling alley (6 pins, 5 frames) was promptly destroyed by Callan throwing the ball instead of bowling it. Sideshow Bob brought his Violet Wand kit to show Clint, so we had 3 violet wands in the house. Yellow dress was almost universal -- but we missed Svetlana's bumblebee outfit :) The power went out around midnight, just as a lot of people were arriving. That didn't stop anything, and that didn't stop the 2AM light-BDSM scenes from happening either. Then Clint brought out as many battery powered things as possible. And then the Tazapper & TENS unit toys. At one point Clint lost his drink on the main road -- hiking around to try to identify the source of the power failure -- and it took awhile to find it in the dark. That cup almost escaped! It was the night of its life! For friends, The Facebook event page is at www.facebook.com/events/1618621541769405/

I had some old lights that I used to have around the patio at my old house. They were looking a little worse for the wear so I decided to spruce them up & give them to my sister for her house. I used a colour called 'hammered copper' because her porch is brown & I thought it would look better than black. I liked the way they turned out so I went ahead and painted all the little lights I had for her, too. She was pretty happy when she came home from out of town to find them around her front porch.
Several years ago when both Kathy’s and my Mothers were living with us before they died, Kathy’s Mom had to have a couple lights on all of the time in her room. I took the two small solar panels that I had acquired after my brother died and put them up on the roof. I ran wires down to a panel on the wall close to the battery box that is outside. The gauges tell me how much juice is going into or out of the batteries. I have another fuse panel and small wires ran through them to all of the rooms in the house. I am using LED lights in all of the lights so the battery will last for several days if it is cloudy for several days. Most of the LED’s are highly directional with a 15°angle of bright light, a few are more like a 60° angle so they are not as bright. I made the fixtures so they can turn to any spot in the room. You can aim them and set in a chair and read very easy in the beam of bright light. The rest of the room does have light from it but not like an incandescent bulb. I can light over 10 LED bulbs and not use the power that one car incandescent parking light uses. We have found them very handy when the power has gone out for several days. We use it every night as I have red LEDs in several rooms for night lights. That way we keep the system up and going. Something you don’t use, you don’t keep up.

Weird that something that used to be a joke is now actually a really useful shipping product, you know?
The landlord installed these a few weeks ago. I spent most of my free time yesterday processing photos from the weekend and then reading the deluge of comments when I posted them on Facebook, so I didn't really do any useful shooting. So here's a picture taken two feet from my front door.
Women Rewarded Solar Lights for Adult Literacy
Solar Lantern Distribution To Adult Women PEP TANDOALLAHYAR Oct12th, 2017
Pakistan has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world. The general understanding of literacy in Pakistan is the ability to read and write and unluckily, millions of people in Pakistan are dispossessed of even this. The situation seems even worse when we look into the urban-rural divide. In rural Sindh, women are most deprived of education due to cultural customs which has created gender inequality and has deprived women to have a voice in the society. Through Adult Literacy Education, Primary Education project PEP is on to change that.
Female Adult Literacy program was initiated in 2016. At present PEP is running 26 Female Adult Literacy (FAL) Centers with 316 Female Adult Literacy members (Adult Students) in different areas of rural Sindh as follows,

A close-up of my "solution" to the cracked-step problem: A cinder block counterweight. Solar light added to reduce tripping hazard; I may paint this thing bright yellow.
First I had to go at it with a weed wacker. For weeks we'd kick the dirt down as we walked over them. Finally, Carolyn & I got on our hands and knees and manually scooped all the dirt off of them. WE DID OUR JOB TOO WELL; the middle stone is cracked, and we removed so much dirt it started to rock. Now people are going to hurt themselves! I put a cinder block on it to hold it down, but now someone may trip on the cinder block! So we moved a solar light into the block, and I may buy a can of yellow spray paint to make the block yellow. "Hey! Don't trip on me! I'm here to KEEP you from tripping by keeping the stone from rocking when you step on it!"
cinder block, house maintenance, solar lights, stairs, stone stairs, walkway.
There I Fixed It.

Went out after the sun went down and took this photo. I just love the pretty patterns the solar lights make on the walkway.
Today, we have had beautiful sunshine and it's been lovely and warm but unfortunately I was scrambling around for today's challenge!
However, my wife is out this evening but I told her I would leave a light on for her .... in fact, this little bulb hanging in the garden accompanied with a few others will certainly light up when it's dark ~ it's a solar light!
Our Daily Challenge ~ Leave The Light On ....
Thanks to everyone who views this photo, adds a note, leaves a comment and of course BIG thanks to anyone who chooses to favourite my photo .... thanks to you all.
It was 11.45pm and I still hadn't taken a photo......... then I remembered I'd bought these solar powered lights for the garden.......... poor Andrex was the 'willing' model!
(He'll do anything for food!)
These were a pain to clean and recondition, but they lit our driveway rather well, until the new construction gave us some permanent light.

See that waterfall on the steps? Some 10 years ago -- in one of the first big rainstorms we had while we lived at Casa Clarolyntopiastan -- it seemed that this patio was flooding. As it adjoins my house, and has a nice big foundation/concrete crack at the corner that retains the most water -- I really didn't want this water to start running into my house. There are 2 drains in the patio, but one has been filled with concrete for some reason. The other is farther over. (I had to unclog it during this flood.)
So I went out there, around 2000, with an axe, in the middle of a thudnerstorm, and chopped away at the concrete hump at thop of the steps, until there was a path for the water to drain. Sparks flew off the concrete as my axe hit it, bouncing off my face in the rain. I felt like Thor.
And yes, that's a $3 Home Depot solar light in a patio table umbrella base. Makes it so you can see in this patio during the night. No side light on the house. It's always been VERY dark there.
draining, flooding.

BACKSTORY: Hurricane Irene was a hurri-lame. But the storm AFTER it? That was a doozy. Not nearly as much wind, but way, way, way more water. Fortunately our house has been around awhile, so previous landowners already shaped the property in such a way that it's almost impossible to flood our house. The crookedness of the foundation alone would mean that any flooding would go out our back kitchen door instead of standing in the house. (Except for the fact that the door is currently painted shut...grrr.) Sometimes weakness is a strength.
