Forficula auricularia also known as Earwigs

The darker stuff is wet

The sand I found close to my location was composed of mostly clay and therefore does not hold a lot of water. It is also in very close proximity to a limestone quarry, and therefore believe it holds a high concentration. The organisms around the soil collected are limited mostly to grasses and other small plants. The area also contains a high flying insect population along with many coastal birds. It does not see large animal traffic. Because it is so close to the lake, the elevation slowly declines and therefore I believe that there could be high erosion in this area. The various nutrients and particles found within this soil will most likely end up in the lake, and therefore whatever this soil contains must be closely monitored so it does not receive a large amount of chemicals that will be later deposited in Lake Erie. Soil is an important attribute to any ecosystem, because the nutrients, chemicals, and other particles that it holds are not fixed. Instead, through water runoff and erosion, they will be carried and deposited into local areas such as watersheds.

(a) Since the ball of soil broke in my hand it is a loamy sand. (b)the soil hinders water flow and nutrient movement because it is mostly sand and tightly packed less water is able to travel through it.

Soil extraction area - required removal of junk (twigs, leaves) that sit ontop of soil

Third times a charm and still breaks...conclusion it is a loamy sand!

Building a custom home means knowing the soil type for Lake City home foundations is key. Different soils affect stability and durability, so understanding what’s beneath your feet is a must.

Here’s the quick soil rundown:

🌾 Sandy soil—fast draining but unstable

Clay soil—swells with water, shrinks when dry

🌿 Loam—ideal but sensitive to drainage

🌱 Organic—needs extra preparation

This is just a picture of the area from where I gathered the soil.

a) I think the soil at my location is sandy loam.

b) Being that the soil is a type a loam it is generally good for absorption of water and nutrients.

c) Organisms in the area were mostly plants and some lady bugs.

d) The plants affect the soil quality because they use up the nutrients in the soil.

e) There is a possibility that the soil can be eroded because it is close to the salt pond. The soil may be deposited into other areas of the park, which I feel would not have a bad effect.

f) Knowing the texture of soil let's us know how water is absorbed and moved in an area and also what type of organisms would grow there.

My Question relates to what types of animals like clay loam soil the best or prefer it the most? Because my location has a lot of slugs and spiders, does this mean that my soil is a very good source of organic debris so they can break it down?

Also, do animals exist in the same woodlot, but farther down where human activities are not around or do they sense human activity from far away and tend to stay, themselves, far away?

Soil is a farmer’s true identity. Until and unless he doesn’t know what kind of soil is, he cannot know what he can grow. He should get a regular report from a soil testing lab to know each and everything about the soil so that he can fix it and condition it for great yields every time. After all, good soil means good yield which means happy farmers. And, this in turn means a well-fed society. Hence, it is very important to study what type of soil is there in a particular region or land. In fact, the lack of information thereof, we have lost a great deal of fertile land for agriculture. This is the risk we cannot take in the times when we have greater number of mouths to feed.
