Made and Bottled by Orca Beverage Soda Works
Mukilteo, Washington
A good friend of mine stopped over the other day to give me this root beer. He is a bit of a root beer connoisseur. 24 years ago he stopped drinking alcohol after being involved in a serious car accident. He discovered root beer shortly after and that has been his drink of choice ever since.
He collects different root beers and keeps a bottle of every new root beer he has had. He also homebrews, bottles and kegs the different root beers that he makes.
This is after a few days in Prague, including Halloween. Yeah, I know. I missed it. The original goal here was to fly back to Stuttgart, train to Heidelberg, meet Ebil and Carsten, and then go our separate ways. Maria would fly back to Milan and I would go back to Freiburg to see Anne for a few more days.
So we were late to the airport for a million reasons. Then, on the bus, I realized that I had left my passport under the mattress of the downtown hotel bed. Great Idea, Matt. No one will find it there -- including YOU. Enough of the third person. So I jumped off the bus in a "save yourself, Maria" moment and tried to taxi back to the hotel to grab the passport.
We were already too far out of town and all taxis already had airport folks in them. Realizing that I was completely fucked, I jumped on the next airport-bound bus and went to make sure that Maria could board alright. On the way, I realized that I had all of our flight information, so good thing I went back (Maria knows some KGB hitmen). I caught her at the counter five minutes before the scheduled takeoff. Chinese fire drill time.
The black backpack in the background was all I brought for my 6 week trip. But I bought so much contraband in southern Italy and Prague (silver bag) that I ended up having to get another bag. Maria had some of my stuff in her giant duffle bag here, I had some of her stuff, and she still had to give me some presents to deliver to her mom, Tatyana, in the states. Three minutes of clown college and we got it all straight. Then we said goodbye and she ran to her gate. It was that fast. Three minutes later, I realized I was in the Czech republic by myself and I kind of freaked out and got really excited at the same time.
I went back to grab the passport and then searched for a tourist-unfriendly bar with a good window seat view. One pint told me I should relax. Another pint told me to try to get back to Germany NOW. The third pint thought I should have another pint. Then the fourth pint, the wisest and my favorite, said I should take my time and swing by Cesky Krumlov on the way to Austria and back to Freiburg. Dad had strongly recommended Cesky Krumlov. So I did that. Mayhem insued.

Originally built in 1667, it is the largest temple of Zen Buddhism in Guizhou Province. It features majesty and sobriety. Hongfu means to develop Buddha's spirits and to benefit mankind. Today it is rated as one of the 142 National Key Temple Sscenic Areas as well as the Key Cultural Relic Preservation in Guizhou Province.
'Hongfu' is Chinese for 'good fortune', which is an apt name for the temple considering its history. It was in 1672 when Chisong, a monk during the Ming Dynasty founded the temple. It had very poor beginnings, being little more than a small hut, but Chisong was determined that it should become a revered shrine and through his persistence many local officials gave their support. In time the temple was to become the most important Buddhist temple in the area.
When you visit the temple, on entering the gate, you will first see the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower on both sides. The bronze bell weighs more than 3,000 jin in Chinese measurement (equal to about 3,300 pounds), and was cast in 1469 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
On entering the first hall named Heavenly King Hall, you can see the carved statues of Maitreya Buddha and the four Heavenly Kings. On its walls there are also steles of sutra and huge paintings. The second main hall is the Bodhisattva Hall dedicated to Skanda Bodhisattva, and Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara with 32 arms. Inside the third hall named Mahavira Hall there are gilded statues of Sakyamuni, juuhachi rakan (or the 18 arhats), and others. There's also a jade Buddha statue that is from Rangoon, the capital of Burma. It is 1.5 meters (4.92 feet) high and weighs 900 kilograms (1984 pounds). The statue is made out of choice jade and looks beneficent but solemn, and it stands among more than 10 other jade statues of Bodhisattva and Maitreya.
Besides these superb halls, the temple is also adorned with galleries, pools, and springs, which are of high artistic value. In recent years many prominent people have visited the temple and in accordance with Chinese tradition have left poetry in praise of the inspiring architecture and its setting. A stroll through the temple compound will enable you to enjoy its peaceful environment while reflecting upon its splendid past.

THE EXPANSION OF NOTHINGNESS
One of my biggest ambitions as a creative is to help people achieve sobriety based on my own independent recovery of 25 years thus far on 17/08/24. I have decided to look in to ways of selling my art, songs and literature to make both: a modest income and also realise my ambition to reach and encourage others. cheers. C. Allen

The Collection is Kusmi Tea’s new launch in time for Christmas, offering a selection of miniatures of the tea house’s bestsellers. Cosfibel created a winning coffret for the assortment.
Sobriety and refinement
Kusmi Tea is launching 'The Collection', a coffret featuring the brand’s most beloved teas. The famed tea house asked Cosfibel to create a case with detailed finishing.
Constructed of mounted board with a hinge, covered in white ply paper with a matte film, the only decoration on the pure and simple packaging is the hot-stamped silver logo on the cover. When opened, the brand’s elegant «coat of arms» appears in debossing.
Inside the coffret, the round, small-format boxes are enveloped like jewels in thermoformed inserts covered in an EVA wedge sleeve, rather than simple flocking. The same impeccable results were called on for all aspects of the pack: EVA tinting, to give a bright white shade and bring out the colored boxes, the adjusted blanks for the inserts, the clasp’s perfect finishing and the board’s thickness.
All of these elements make for a sumptous gift coffret that becomes a true keepsake!
The best of Kusmi Tea
'The Collection' offers 15 miniature loose tea blends packaged in the brand’s famed round coloured metal boxes.
The coffret brings a concentrate of Kusmi Tea’s specialties: wellness teas, exclusive blends and green and black teas.
“The Collection” also includes a box of paper filters.
Price: €69

“Drunken antics led man to suicide”
Drunken antics, coupled with serious depression, were of growing concern to his family and prompted at least one doctor to advocate for complete sobriety.
But Arthur Dempsey struggled to go without and continued to drink himself into a series of unfortunate situations.
His obvious problems with the bottle kept him away from basic day to day duties including overall maintenance of the Arch Hill Hotel where he was licensee.
Authorities grew increasingly concerned at the state of the building and ordered him to make necessary repairs.
Things reached a head on July 17, 1901, when police were called to a disturbance at the premises and found Dempsey in the midst of a drunken melt down.
The 46 year-old had pushed his wife Jessie out of the pub and was accusing her of immoral behaviour.
Attending officers included details of the evening's events in a subsequent report to a committee set up to consider liquor licensing renewal applications.
References were made to the "filthy language" used by Dempsey during the incident and his failure to do any of the repair work previously ordered.
The entire saga was reported in daily newspapers and a mortified Dempsey responded by apologising to his wife through the public notices of next available editions.
It was all too much for his employer, brewery company Hancock & Co, whose directors had already aired their concerns about his drinking habits.
Manager Ernest Davis, who would later be Mayor of Auckland, summoned Dempsey to his office and told him his days at the hotel were over.
Davis feared it was just a matter of time before his troubled employee would lose his license and hoped to avoid the obvious problems such a development would bring.
Dempsey's response did not seem unusual for a man who's working days were numbered:
"Send me up three casks of beer," he said. "It's the last order I will ever give you."
But it soon became clear that his words had sinister overtones.
Dempsey's body was found floating face down under the bow of a scow berthed at the end of Albert Street in the city on the morning of September 4.
It was a harbour board employee who made the grisly discovery and summoned police who transferred the corpse to the Auckland morgue.
An inquest was held at the Criterion Hotel a day later where Dempsey's doctor and employer were among those called in to comment.
The cause of death, coroner Thomas Gresham ruled, was suicide.
But the last word came from Dempsey in a letter that arrived in Ernest Davis's letterbox.
"Dear Sir," it said, "You always treated me kindly and I thank you for it. Be kind enough to treat my wife and children in a gentlemanly manner."

"All God's children need travelling shoes
Drive your problems from here
All good people read good books
Now your conscience is clear
I hear you talk girl
Now your conscience is clear
In the morning I wipe my brow
Wipe the miles away
I like to think I can be so willed
And never do what you say
I'll never hear you
And never do what you say
(CHORUS)
Look my eyes are just holograms
Look your love has drawn red from my hands
From my hands you know you'll never be
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety
We just poked a little pie
For the fun people had at night
Late at night don't need hostility
The timid smile and pause to free
I don't care about their different thoughts
Different thoughts are good for me
Up in arms and chaste and whole
All God's children took their toll
Repeat CHORUS
Cup of tea, take time to think, yea
Time to risk a life, a life, a life
Sweet and handsome
Soft and porky
You pig out 'til you've seen the light
Pig out 'til you've seen the light
Half the people read the papers
Read them good and well
Pretty people, nervous people
People have got to sell
News you have to sell
Repeat CHORUS
More than twist in my sobriety
More than twist in my sobriety"
Tanita Tikaram ~ 1996
This song haunts me. The singer's voice, the lyrics (opening line is from a poem by Maya Angelou, incidentally), the single cover (see last image), just about everything about Twist In My Sobriety is just compelling.
Far too compelling to ignore, Twist In My Sobriety the earrings came to be. Deceptively simple but extremely time-intensive, these staples are true labors of love.
Triple wrapped Fine 999 Silver in hair-thin gauges of 22, 26 and 30 Gauge to crawl and slither across hammered curvaceous hoops.
