CSXT 2814, GP38-2, leads CSXT 2675, GP38-2, north on the Saginaw Sub past the searchlight signals at South Grand Blanc. This Plymouth to Flint turn local is heading for it's next industry of Clean Harbor, at Atwood Junction. The train would end up dying in Flint's McGrew yard this trip.
With the winter months quickly approaching here’s a shot from February of 2018 of a Westbound sand train blasting through Morris, Illinois on the former Rock Island.
With a chance of a significant snow total coming Sunday night into Monday, here’s a throwback shot to 2015 in Mazon on the Santa Fe.
A BNSF SD70Ace leads a California bound Z train through the snow in the outskirts of Mazon, Illinois.
A BNSF AC44 leads Z-WSPNBY West through Mazon, IL. You don’t always see the BNSF AC44’s hauling stacks. They’re almost always in coal service.

It was exactly two years ago yesterday that I posted my 'I'm gonna start taking pictures of birds' announcement. www.flickr.com/photos/25973579@N07/3621113058/in/set-7215... The first shot I posted made Explore. I was both surprised, and embarrassed, because it wasn't very good. www.flickr.com/photos/25973579@N07/3653311490/in/set-7215... I recently looked back over some of those early shots from the Summer of 2009 and literally cringed at the sight of them. They were horrible!! I almost wore the letters off my Delete key getting rid of them!
The above shot is a far cry from those early ones, however I must post a disclaimer here. Do not expect my future birds-in-flight shots to be this good. But as pleased as I am with this lucky capture, there are lots of birds-in-flight shots on Flickr for me to strive toward including those by one of my contacts, vidterry www.flickr.com/photos/17084494@N03, who wrote on my original 'bird announcement' two years ago: "You've been exposed to the 'disease', and now it is progressing towards a full-blown illness. Photographing birds will take every minute you make available, and every dollar you wish to spend. (and perhaps some you hadn't planned on at all.)". Boy, was he right!!! - - - Be sure to check out his site sometime!
So... what have I learned over the last two years??
1. Photographing birds, especially in flight, is a LOT harder than it looks and a lot harder than I thought it would be.
2. Light truly is 'everything'.
3. A bird in flight can be in focus as far as the outter edges being sharp, but without good details within the bird, the picture isn't very good.
4. Not all flapping wing formations are aesthetically pretty.
5. Many shots of a bird in flight will be good - of the bird itself, but there is a branch in front of its face as it flies by, or another bird flies right in its path as you click the shutter, or you only got its feet and tail feathers in the shot, or its beak is chopped off, or my personal favorite... your neighbor decides to park his red pickup truck right behind the feeder so it is in the background of every shot you take that day!
6. I have LOTS more to learn!

Q32103 heads south past the cantilever signals at North Grand Blanc with CSXT 8089/8557/8243. The train of 123x40 mixed freight is headed for Toledo Stanley, coming from McGrew Yard in Flint.
In what is my last shot of the year 2017, it's fitting it's a trio of SD40s and a GE, since that has dominated my adventures this year.
Here BNSF 1940 leads a CSX Tier 4 and two H1 SD40s on the H-DILNTW1-28A.
The wind was blowing and the snow was falling and the temperatures were at 0. It was a perfect storm.
So long 2017, thanks for all of the amazing times trackside. Happy New Year!
12-23-22 Marissa, IL. On the way to Wyoming for Christmas, I had some time to kill on the way. Checking heritageunits i saw the post that the IC unit was nearby. Off I went and caught them heading up the Prairie State Energy Campus branch to deliver some cars.
Trying shots indoor, this is shot in the afternoon with light to the right from windows . Me laying on the floor and shooting away ! A lot of blurred photo's but this one looks okay to me :)
Always nice to see these paws in rest :)
50mm lens ; 1/50 sec ; f/1.8 ; iso 200 ; exp. bias -1.00 , forgot to change that after snowshots !!!
Let me know what you think about the compo, would it have been better to see more in focus of Xziva ???
For many people the winter officially ends this weekend although there are different points of view to this subject...
So I think this will be my last snowshot of this winter. I still have many more but I might keep them for next winter because here in Holland snow is not so sure in wintertime....;-)

This is one of my more troublesome photographs. I had a vision of how the tauntaun should gallop in the thick snow, I shot it twice and didn't get it right. I was never truly happy with what I had posted from the photoshoots in 2010 and 2011 (from which this frame is from).
I recently went thru the old photos of my "Lego on Hoth" -theme looking for images I could re-edit for square format for my Instagram account. Many of the people there apparently had not seen these old snowshots, so it was okay to recycle some of them for a new audience, so to speak.
While going thru the images I found this unpublished rejected frame. It has a problem on the left (the snow spray looks bad), but when cropped for square the problem goes away nicely.
Now, after three years, with colours tweaked, this feels pretty much perfect for me, this is how tauntauns gallop in thick snow. In Lego.
HESR 702-17 comes into CN's Durand Yard, in Durand, MI with 38 cars for interchange. Powering the train are consecutively numbered SD40-2s HESR 3390 and 3391.
1-6-2022 Nashville, TN. WeGo Star.....Cough Cough Music City Star train #93 tiptoes into Nashville as the snow has covered and frozen alot of switches and especially the roads. The sun has just dipped below the horizon and night is fast approaching but I just had to wait in the 26 degree temps.

When the rebels had set up their base on the icy planet of Hoth they had to find a way to move about in the hostile sub-zero environment. They discovered the Tauntaun, a strong beast indigenous to Hoth, docile enough to be domesticated for use as mounts.
But first they had to be caught.
A special group of five animal handlers did the footwork on every single Tauntaun used. First, three handlers cornered the beast, then a "whisperer" made contact and, almost magically, soothed it for the "saddler" to do his job.
Sounds easy? Well, it wasn't. It all had to take place during the first hour after the sunrise. See, right before the Tauntauns began their daily search for food there was a moment when the beasts were still a bit drowsy after a good night's sleep. That was the best and only moment to catch them. The problem was that you never knew where they slept.
I'm happy with this photograph. It was an experiment trying to combine two of the techniques I've discovered when making the snowshots. It worked beautifully and I had very little to fix in Photoshop afterwards.
EDIT: From my "Small Scenes from a Big Galaxy" (2015) book: "I'm happy with this photograph. It worked beautifully and had very little to fix in Photoshop. The room I shot this in, however, was all white after I had created a baking powder blizzard with a hairdryer. In fact, virtually our entire apartment was white because I had forgotten to close the doors behind me. This was the messiest photoshoot I've ever had".
