Snowdrift Metallic

August 2, 2025

There is a lake by my house that I never seem to be able to get to. It is only open from 8 am to sunset, which makes weekdays impossible. Most Saturdays are now working (my choice, not complaining!). But Dusk is a nice relaxing time to go. The snow is actually really pretty when you don't have to shovel it.

The snow is building up behind our house again. I shoveled the top of the pile away from the hot water heater exhaust vent again but now the snow is actually pressing against the big window in the back and almost fully covered the back door (which we almost never use, even in the summer). If I were silly enough, I could have easily climbed on to the roof (the roof line was about at hip level on me). A very warm storm has moved in and it's been raining for most of the night, leaving thick sheaves of ice on the sidewalk. I haven't seen the back of the house yet...

Wonder of March, an important snow storm give us a lot of snow precipitation. Under the heavy wind from the East, some snowdrifts raised on the road (in some place over 2,5 meters). And put our region under a red alert by the weather forecast..

The quotidian life stops for a few moments and the landscape is completely different. Bringing us the mountain's air to the sea. For the greatest happiness.

Three days after the storm, they still hadn't plowed. But I didn't care. Before the Blizzard of '79, the city never plowed side streets -- that's where I learned my winter driving skills as a teenager.

Liz and Roger decided to see how deep the snow was by taking a more direct line from the rocky outcrop where we had sheltered for a bite to eat.

In early February, we had snow and winds which, as usual, created a huge drift across the driveway in front of our house. It had already been cleared twice, but had rapidly filled in again as the wind continued to blow. This time, the third, was successful, and we were finally able to get our truck out of the garage and go to town! (17-02-05-6358)

"A snowdrift is a deposit of snow sculpted by wind into a mound during a snowstorm. Snowdrifts resemble sand dunes and are formed in a similar manner, namely, by wind moving light snow and depositing it when the wind has virtually stopped, usually against a stationary object. Snow normally crests and slopes off toward the surface on the windward side of a large object. On the leeward side, areas near the object are a bit lower than surrounding areas, but are generally flatter." (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowdrift)

March in Norway. One of the hardest and coldest winters that anyone can remember. Global warming does not necessarily mean that everywhere gets warmer.

Wed Dec 01, 2010

This morning another foot, or so, of fresh snow overnight has given us a total depth of 51cm (21").

I do not recall ever seeing snow of this depth in my life (born 1945). 1947 snow may have been deeper in Leeds - where I was then.

We are at only 63 metres above sea level.

Nearly all schools in Edinburgh closed for 2nd consecutive day. Unprecedented, but everyone is afraid of being sued these days.

I love the patterns the wind carves into snow. You can see the snow blowing in the background.
