Medicinal property = antidote for snakebite

I travelled far north to take in the sights

My heart set on seeing the Northern Lights

Down on the Strand I met a drunken rechabite

As he staggered around looking to fight

A warning to all not to drink snakebite

With eyes bright red and cheeks pasty white

I inquired of him about the Northern Lights

They`re sitting right there are you a blind wee skite

And as much as he was wrong he was also right

So I just smiled and ignored his hurtful slight

Because in the head I knew he wasn`t right

That`s the benefit of X-ray specs and having a second sight

Yellow-bellied Water Snake, Wildwood Lake, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Title quote by W.C. Fields

Prince Albert is one hell of a place

A wintry shot with LittleKitty, taken a couple of weeks ago. She's subtly raising her skirt, giving us a peak of her bare skin.

The Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake is the most common venomous snake in Florida, and is responsible for more human snakebite than any other snake. It is found throughout the state.

Also known as the ground rattler, the snake is grey in color with black blotches all over its body, including the underside. There is a series of nearly circular black markings on the middle of the back, with a dotted brick-red to orange line running right down the center of the back, between each black blotch.

These snakes only attain a length of 2½ feet, but average around a foot in length. Their small size & moderately mild venom keeps them from being a serious threat to human life, but the bite is still extremely painful.

I found this rather large specimen at least two and one half feet long crossing the road, at Three Lakes WMA in Osceola County, Florida.

As most of you already know The Worm is an

alien in a dogs costume. ..... True Story .....

And furthermore many of you know about the snake

encounter she had the other day. Bit Twice !

I was up all night with her till around 6AM then we both

fell asleep till 8AM. At 9AM The Worm was fed and she

had a very robust appetite.

Now please pay close attention here ...................

See back behind her where there's some green grass ?

That's where photo no# 2 starts and stops ......................

OK, It's 3PM and we just returned from the Dog Dr.

There was two small holes in her belly where a set

of fangs went in but after the dead skin was cut away

yesterday it has now expanded to the size of a

BiC Lighter + laying on it's side.

Dr says it looks good and to bring her back Monday.

So The Worm is eating pretty good and her open wound

is clean with no infections. The bite on her knee looks OK

as the swelling has gone down with no infection also.

Tomorrow morning I'll be heading out to The Dog Palace.

There will be a bunch of stuff packed on my body and on

the bike too. Another 10 kilos of dog kibble will be ridding

between my legs and dropped off with The Nuns................

Right now I need a nap badly ...................;-)

Thank You.

As far as I know, this plant has no actual medicinal value but a tea from the leaves has been used to treat snakebites and upset stomachs. It's corms (roots) are edible. It's U.S.A. range is ND to TX east to NY and FL.

From Wiki:

Echinacea angustifolia was widely used by the North American Plains Indians for its general medicinal qualities. Echinacea was one of the basic antimicrobial herbs of eclectic medicine from the mid 19th century through the early 20th century, and its use was documented for snakebite, anthrax, and for relief of pain. In the 1930s echinacea became popular in both Europe and America as a herbal medicine. According to Wallace Sampson, MD, its modern day use as a treatment for the common cold began when a Swiss herbal supplement maker was "erroneously told" that echinacea was used for cold prevention by Native American tribes who lived in the area of South Dakota Although Native American tribes didn't use echinacea to prevent the common cold, some of the tribes did use echinacea to treat some of the symptoms that could be caused by the common cold: The Kiowa used it for coughs and sore throats, the Cheyenne for sore throats, the Pawnee for headaches, and many tribes used it as an analgesic, including the Sioux from South Dakota.

Native Americans learned of Echinacea angustifolia by observing elk seeking out the plants and consuming them when sick or wounded, and identified those plants as elk root.

Varanasi, India

Every day, 200-300 bodies are cremated in Varanasi. I saw about 10 fires burning at a time, each being a cremation. Only married men and women are cremated. Holy men, pregnant women, children, lepers, and people killed by snakebite cannot be cremated. These bodies are instead taken by boat and sunk directly in the Ganges (from what I understand, around 50 bodies per day). The cremation must take place within 24 hours of death. According to Hindu belief, if a person is cremated they achieve instant nirvana from the cycle of death and rebirth.

A little bit about the process. Before being cremated, the bodies are bathed in the Ganges river by family members and then wrapped in a piece of cloth. They are then placed on top of the pyre and are doused in oil and sandalwood dust. The pyre is then lit by the closest male family member, using an eternal flame believed to have been started by the Lord Shiva. It takes around 750 lbs. of wood per cremation, and the process takes around 3 hours. Because the ribs of men and the hip bones of women often don't completely burn away, they are deposited into the Ganges.

Varanasi is the considered the holiest city in India, and is therefore the most desired location to be cremated. Only the wealthy families can afford to have family members cremated here. The funeral pyres are very expensive and if a poor family can't afford an entire pyre, the body is often not fully cremated.

This was my first encounter with a snake while bush-walking with the camera in Yunnan and it is quite a mesmerizingly beautiful creature. Snakes (and the potential implications of encountering snakes) is not something I have paid much heed to here unlike in Australia where it pays to be extremely vigilant anywhere you go. I am sure I have been close to snakes on numerous occasions without seeing them. This one paid me little attention and as you can see I got quite close, perhaps foolishly. The tree vipers are quite venomous with a potent haemotoxin and the most common cause of snakebite in Taiwan, for example.
