Well, it's called Viper's Bugloss. 'Bugloss' is from the Greek for ox-tongue; it refers to the rough, spiny leaves of our plant; 'Viper' refers to the viperiform of the ripe seeds which resemble a snake's head. Following the theory of natural resemblance, it was believed that Echium vulgare could be used an an antidote to snakebites. Mioreover, for what reason I don't know, a syrup made from this plant was thought to drive away melancholy.
Notice the two-pronged pistil, which does look like a snake's forked tongue...
Henricus (father) and Abraham (son) Munting, seventeenth-century professors of botany of the university at Groningen, both list Echium vulgare among their plants. The elder Munting is clearly particular about its color, calling it Echium vulgare fl. coeruleo; 'sky-blue', in his description, Abraham leaves out the color although he does mention the red of other Echiums... Perhaps he just didn't like blue.

Back in my hiking days, I would pass three rattlesnake dens every time I passed by Bullfrog Pond, Sulphur Springs Pond, and Mustard Field Trail leading to the acorn woodpecker families. I knew enough about rattlers and, more important, I had emergency hospital in memory dial in the car and in my cell.
Still, when I look back, eight feet is a bit close to a pit viper. On a hot day, however, even vipers need a break and would prefer to sit in a nest - like this one excavated into the wall of a trail and holding six rattlers - than come after me plus a rattler would rather give notice and rattle than waste venom on something he's not going to eat. Besides, I am known to be high in sugar and salt, and that is unhealthy for humans and snakes alike.
The western diamondback rattlesnake or Texas diamond-back (Crotalus atrox) is a venomous rattlesnake species found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is likely responsible for the majority of snakebite fatalities in northern Mexico and the greatest number of snakebites in the U.S. It lives in elevations from below sea level up to 6,500 feet (2,000 m). This species ranges throughout the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) and northern half of Mexico. Other common names for this species include western diamond-backed rattlesnake,[3] adobe snake, Arizona diamond rattlesnake, coon tail, desert diamond-back, desert diamond rattlesnake, fierce rattlesnake, spitting rattlesnake, buzz tail, Texan rattlesnake, Texas diamond-back, and Texas rattler.
Adults grow to four feet and are rather "stubby." The greatest number of buttons on the rattle is eight to ten. And, again, the rattlesnake would prefer not to bite, and although there's no rule, but I have yet to come too close to a diamondback where I didn't get sufficient warning ... like a heart attack or BP that went from 120/60 to 220/180. There are four or five species of snakes on Mt. Diablo. The diamondback is the only viper. The Western Kingsnake is a constrictor (please do not buy Kingsnakes for pets unless you realize their value to the habitat and the responsibility for care and feeding for 20-30 years!!! (Same advice goes double for parrots. I have been to too many places where people have let their pets "loose" or, frankly, abandoned them, and they are not adapted to a natural environment. Western Diamondbacks live 15-25 years.
Well, I've already started, so here's a brief list of the snakes on Mt. Diablo: Gopher Snake, Pacific Gopher Snake to the venomous Western Rattlesnake (subspecies = Northern Pacific Rattlesnake), to the endangered Alameda Whipsnake, of which Mount Diablo is one of the last remaining safe habitats. Lizards include Western Fence Lizard, Western Skink, California Whiptail, Horned Lizard. I have never seen a whipsnake and it's looking like I never will.
P.S. It took over 20 minutes to get this shot with the tongue flicking. The tongue, btw, is purple.

The game of Snow snake actually does exist, but not in Iceland.
It was still snowing a lot today and just about anything could have hidden in those white swirls running across the land.

A harmless Green Water Snake seen on a night drive in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. Photo identified by the African Snakebite Institute.
Six hours at the hospital for medical observation including, EKG, several bloodtests, check of blood pressare, thats what I had to go through to get this shot. I lost focus for ”one” second and was bitten just above my knee. Lesson learned, never loose the respect for wild animals and never loose focus.
Behind Blue Eyes.
Snakes shed their skin as they grow.
In the process, the snake's eyes become dark blue or cloudy. It's generally a sign that liquid is building up between the eye and the eye cap, which is part of the snake's skin.

At Pastor Charles Calvin's house, there is much preparation for the Thanksgiving meal. Before the guests begin arriving, Pastor Calvin seizes a moment to be alone with God, in His Word.
"The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock; And exalted be the God of my salvation, The God who executes vengeance for me, And subdues peoples under me. He delivers me from my enemies; Surely You lift me above those who rise up against me; You rescue me from the violent man. Therefore I will give thanks to You among the nations, O Lord, And I will sing praises to Your name." Psalm 18:46-49
"Lord, I thank You for Your kind protection. Here we are, about to celebrate another Thanksgiving, another day set aside to acknowledge our express gratitude to You, and You alone.
Father, this old chest beside me. It has things in it that are special to us in this life and, though it is old now, it has faithfully kept the contents secure.
How much more, Father, have you protected us? Not only have you secured us for this life, but in Your salvation through Christ Jesus, for all eternity. And that is the far greater. You have protected us thus far and whatever dangers You allow to come our way in the future, and whatever may befall, I thank you that the greater has been done, and our souls are safe.
Lord, we cannot number the protections we know, and then the ways You have protected from things we do not know are greater still. Thank you, Father, for Your gracious protection on me and my family."

Because of man’s sin and the subsequent curse that poisoned the perfection of God’s creation, the world is often a dangerous place. People suffer every day from natural disasters, crime, car accidents, poor health, and more. It’s natural to seek protection from the pain and sorrow of life. Does the Bible promise us the protection of God when we become part of His eternal family?
There are many verses in God’s Word that seem to promise God’s physical protection. For example, Psalm 121:3 says, “He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber.” In verse 7 the psalmist declares, “The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life.” As Israel entered the Promised Land, God promised them that He would never leave or forsake them (Deuteronomy 31:6).
At first glance, it does seem that God promises to protect His children from harm. But if that were the case, why do so many Christians around the world struggle with persecution, illness, loss, accidents, and injuries? We all know Christians whose “foot” has “slipped.” Is God breaking His promise, or are we missing something?
First of all, we should interpret the Old Testament promises of physical safety in the context of the Mosaic Covenant. As the children of Israel were obedient to the covenant, God promised them various material and physical blessings—on their crops, livestock, children, etc. (Deuteronomy 28). The Old Covenant was very much concerned with earthly blessings, and physical protection was among them. This was the basis for Hezekiah’s prayer when he was smitten with a fatal illness (2 Kings 20:1–6). Throughout the Old Testament, we see God protecting His people in order to bring His plans to pass (e.g., Exodus 1:22—2:10; 1 Kings 17:1–6; Jonah 1).
It is important to understand that we are under the New Covenant, not the Old. God does not promise to keep believers in Christ from all physical harm. There are certainly times when He does mercifully shield us from situations where we would sustain injury or loss. Paul and Luke’s survival of the shipwreck in Acts 27 and Paul’s imperviousness to the snakebite in Acts 28 are cases in point. Today, however, God’s promises to believers usually refer to spiritual protection.
When we believe in Jesus Christ for salvation, the Holy Spirit immediately enters our lives. We are sealed for eternity and brought under God’s spiritual protection from that moment on. This means that, regardless of our future sins or the schemes of Satan, we will never lose the salvation God has granted (2 Timothy 1:12). There is nothing that can ever separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:38–39). In addition, we are given freedom from the dominion of sin—we are no longer slaves to sinful thoughts, desires, and actions, but are born into a new life of holiness (Romans 6:22).
Throughout our lives, God will continue to “guard [our] hearts and [our] minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7), providing the strength, peace, and perseverance we need to make it through any test or trial. His Spirit grows in us fruit that will strengthen our Christian walk (Galatians 5:22–23), and He provides us with powerful tools with which we can fend off the enemy’s spiritual attacks (Ephesians 6:10–17).
There is nothing wrong with asking for physical protection from God, as long as we realize He does not always see fit to grant it. He knows we are strengthened by the trials that come our way, and in each physical trial, we are assured of His spiritual protection. So, rather than seeking complete physical protection from God, we can agree with James when he says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance” (James 1:2–3).

Location: Peninsular Malaysia.
Also known as Malayan ground pit viper, Malayan ground snake, "Malayan moccasin".
Distribution: Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia (Java), Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, southern Myanmmar.
Reproduction: Oviparous and the eggs are guarded by the female after deposition.
This is the snake that causes the most snakebites in Malaysia yearly. In northern Malaysia it is responsible for some 700 incidents of snakebite annually with a mortality rate of about 2 percent (U.S. Navy. 1991. Remarkably sedentary, it has often been found in the same spot several hours after an incident involving humans, hence its locally called Ular Kapak Bodoh (meaning stupid pit viper) .
Toxicity: Highly venomous (can be lethal)
Its venom causes severe pain and local swelling and sometimes tissue necrosis, but deaths are not common. Unfortunately many victims are left with dysfunctional or amputated limbs due to the lack of anti-venom and early treatment.
The fer-de-lance or Labaria (Bothrops atrox) is the most common venomous snake in Guyana. As a result, it is also responsible for more snakebites than other vipers and elapids. This little fella was found during our recent survey in the Kanuku Mountains and was the most docile individual I have ever worked with.

Ah! Salsifiy! I was reminded of its exquisite taste this morning as I was ambling through the pleasant Botanical Garden of Amsterdam and stopped to admire these yellows, verging on orange marmalades.
Salsify's long black, tuberous, carrot-like roots don't mature until the Autumn; and then it's a bit of a sticky job to divest them of their black skin (best to do this with the roots under water). This delicacy had been grown in Spain already in the sixteenth century and in much of Europe by the mid-seventeenth century. It was seen in Syria by the first post-medieval scientific traveller, botanist and anthropologist to visit the Near and Middle East. Leonhard Rauwolff's (1535-1596) trip (1573-1596) was financed by family members in the hope that he would bring back financially viable botanical products to Germany. He kept a notebook of his journey from Marseilles-Tripoli in Lebanon-Aleppo-Baghdad-Mosul-Jerusalem and back to Europe, and he published his findings and observations once he was safely back home.
In the marketplace of Aleppo Rauwolff saw Salsify - called by him Eppich (a name also used for other plants) - and he notes the local name as: Corton (which is remarkably close to 'Scorzonera'); it's eaten with salt and pepper. He says it's cultivated in that area and especially in the Lebanese mountains near 'Cedars of the Lebanon'. In Europe it went by the scientific name Scorzonera, apparently because it could be used to treat snakebites (a parallel to Serpentaria in Classical Antiquity, of course).
Much as I enjoy Salsify, I've never taken a bite of its leaves or flowers. But our Marmalade Hoverfly, Episyrphus balteatus, seems about to enjoy a Taste of its Pollen.
Sage was initially used for the treatment of snakebite and protecting against evil. But in modern day research, whether smelled, or consumed, it can increase recall abilities and memory retention which helps with concentration. Also, it is great used in many savory dishes!
. . . is the state plant of Texas. It has a multitude of purposes, from snakebite poultice to jelly. Nopalitos, the "pads" of the cactus, peeled and sliced, are available fresh at my local market for use in all manner of regional recipes.
AKA, the greatest piece of Scooby-Doo media ever put to screen.
(except Mystery Incorporated but that's an argument for another day)
I had originally planned/photographed a much smaller group shot for this, but a Scooby tale of this calibre felt deserving of something a little bigger. I also wanted to include the rest of the gang in their outfits from the movie but decided just to go with Shaggy and Scooby since I didn't have the right parts.
Anyway, from left to right we have:
Assorted zombies, Snakebite Scruggs, Detective Beau Neville, Werecat-Simone, Lena, Jacques, Morgan Moonscar and some more zoms
Let me know what you think!
I had a shoot with Nienke/Dingelientje a while ago,
as I really want to do more work with models, but I'm still a little shy with directing and not so sure of my work. Practice, practice.
There will be a blog post with more photos, but just sharing this one here.

The stone structure appearing in each and every pictorial treatise of Istanbul (rather Turkey), has two very captivating tales associated with it. The name `Maiden`s Tower` has its roots in the more popular story relating a maiden`s misfortune. According to this tale, a beautiful Byzantine princess was once quartered in this tower. It is said that soothsayers had predicted her early death by snakebite. Her father, Emperor Constantine who loved her dearly, built an extended castle (near the spot where the present tower exists) and placed her there to avert the fatal end. Eventually the girl died of snakebite, which entered the castle in a grape basket.

Also known as chain viper, Indian Russell's viper, common Russell's viper, seven pacer, chain snake, and scissors snake.
RV is a species of venomous snake in the family Viperidae. Daboia is a monotypic (single) genus of venomous Old World vipers.
Distribution: throughout the Indian subcontinent, Myanmmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, southern China and Taiwan.
The species was named in honor of Patrick Russell (1726–1805),[3] a Scottish herpetologist who first described many of India's snakes, and the name of the genus is from the Hindi word meaning "that lies hid", or "the lurker". Apart from being a member of the big four snakes in India, Daboia is also one of the genera responsible for causing the most snakebite incidents and deaths among all venomous snakes on account of many factors, such as their wide distribution, generally aggressive demeanor, and frequent occurrence in highly populated areas.

Habitat: Tend to avoid dense forests. The snake is mostly found in open, grassy or bushy areas, but may also be found in second growth forests (scrub jungles), on forested plantations and farmland.

Binomial Name
Trimeresurus albolabris
The green tree viper is any of about 25 species of tree-dwelling Asian pit vipers that belong to the genus Trimeresurus. Most of these snakes are green or yellow, and some have bright markings. They have round, golden eyes with vertical pupils, and their prehensile, or grasping, tails are usually coiled tightly around a branch. Adults are rarely more than 3 feet (0.9 meter) in length. Their venom is relatively weak, but their fangs are exceptionally long, and a bite can penetrate deeply.
Snake Knotweed got the name because of the snake-like appearance of its roots, which were formerly used as an antidote to snakebites. Today, the root is folk medicine mainly used to treat diarrhea. The leaves taste mild-sour and are suitable for consumption.
Location: Northern Peninsular Malaysia
Toxicity: Highly venomous
Also known as Malayan ground pit viper, Malayan pit viper, Malayan ground snake, Malayan moccasin.
Distribution: Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Java, Indonesian to certain extend Nepal.
In general, this species has a reputation for being ill-tempered (not this particular specimen though) and quick to strike. In northern Malaysia it is responsible for some 700 incidents of snakebite annually with a mortality rate of about 2%. Remarkably sedentary, it can often be found in the same spot several hours after an incident involving humans.
Venom: Severe pain and local swelling and sometimes tissue necrosis, but deaths are not common. Unfortunately many victims are left with dysfunctional or amputated limbs due to the lack of education (villagers still seek help of shaman or traditional village style treatment) and early treatment.
Breeding habits: This species is oviparous and the eggs are guarded by the female after deposition.

The Black-headed heron (Ardea melanocephala) is large wading bird of sub-Saharan Africa. Similar in behavior to the Great blue heron, the Black-headed can often be found alone, hunting with slow, purposeful movements. Its diet consists most commonly of insects, reptiles, small mammals, frogs and birds. The venomous puff adder was on the menu on this day in central Serengeti National Park. Due partly to its large population, the puff adder is responsible for the highest number of snakebite fatalities in Africa. However, although poisonous when it enters the bloodstream, venom is not generally toxic when swallowed. Instead the venom is quickly broken down by stomach acids rendering it harmless. It is also thought that some animals are immune to the venom in the snakes they typically feed on. That could also be the case with the heron and the adder.
