It's Halloween but it feels like Christmas! Oops, did I really say the C word?!
Blame The Kiwi Co. for bewitching me so early as I rushed home from Trick or Treating just to get my hands on their newest release, Black Honey!
I unpacked this amazing set to marvel on the gorgeous BOM Pantyhose and Tights, that will fit under all your bottoms, with gorgeous Halloweeny prints that are matched by the cutest tops, also with themed prints, and available in a dark and light pack. The Snakes Pantyhose really grabbed me and was the item that guided my sultry, shadow-kissed Kiwi ensemble.

A Puff Adder, one of our venomous snakes, is said to be responsible for 3/4 of all human snakebite deaths in Africa every year. It hisses when alarmed and will seldom move out of the away unless it is overly bothered. It is a specialist rodent eater that lies on game trails, waiting for prey to ambush. As it is prominently diurnal, it clashes with humans as they go on their daily activities.

Just two days ago, this beautiful RHK was found by one of our team member hence it was made available during our "An Overview of Snakebite Management in Malaysia" seminar.
The red-headed krait (Bungarus flaviceps) is a large venomous elapid snake with dramatic coloration. The red-headed krait can grow to a length of up to 7 feet (2.1 m). It lives in lowland rain forest, including those on islands, but it is considered uncommon. It feeds primarily on specific snakes, probably semiaquatic and fossorial snakes. In Southeast Asia, the red-headed krait occurs in Malaysia, Thailand, and Sumatra, with a subspecies in Borneo. The venom potency is little-studied, as bites from this species are extremely rare.

I've been hinting at it in my previous two shots today, and then finally it appeared: a Tasmanian Tiger Snake (Notechis scutatus), commonly known as a black tiger snake because the banding is not as prominent as on the Australian mainland.

Now this one is clearly a juvenile, no more than about 40 cms long. It looked rather beautiful, even though I knew that somewhere nearby "Momma" was lurking. I missed getting a shot first time around as we walked down the path to the Barnbougle beach. It was barely a metre in front of me and already scurrying into the grass before I could get my camera ready. I had a similar experience at Bell Bouy Beach a couple of years back as I watched a juvenile pass within centimetres of my feet (it pays to wear shoes, because although their fangs are not as developed as an adult, the strength of venom is equally deadly).
Anyway, on the way back, not long after the "snake hole" picture, I saw it once again on the path in the sunlight. This time I got reasonably close and took the shot. Snakes are protected species in Tasmania, but this little creature was safe with me. More people die each year playing lawn bowls than die from snake bite (of course the age demographic is a factor) - despite the fact that Australia has some of the most venomous snakes in the world.
Tiger snakes usually shy away unless they feel threatened, and the best way to get on is to learn to live with them. As it is, their habitats are being destroyed in urban areas, so anything we can do to assist them to survive the better. They play an important role in the ecosystem. And in this seaside area with a plentiful supply of fresh water as well, the tiger snakes seemed to be doing well. And by the way, no golfer here has been bitten yet.

"Cloudy Hilltop Wildflowers" by Patti Deters. Late summer wildflowers stand prettily against a dramatic sky with a Cumulonimbus thundercloud and light from the setting sun. The yellow Mexican hat (Ratibida columnifera) is also known as prairie coneflower or thimble flower. The distinctive sombrero shape of the droopy yellow petals and tall center make it one of the easier to identify wildflowers. This field of native flora was enjoyed along a hiking trail at Spring Lake Park Reserve in Hastings, Minnesota. The trail starts out in a restored prairie along the top of the bluffs. Mexican hat, like most native wildflowers, are highly attractive to pollinators. The flower itself is deer resistant but other animals and birds like the flower seed. The plant can be used as a medicinal herb to make a type of tea to treat snakebites and reduce poison ivy symptoms. Length: 0.8-0.9 m but max. length is reported to be in the range of 2.1m (7 ft).
Description: The red-headed krait is a large venomous elapid snake with dramatic coloration. The head and tail are bright red while the rest of the upper body is black. The lower body (ventral) coloration of its head and tail are red while the rest of its ventral scales (neck to the anal scale) are white.
Currently two subspecies are recognised :
(i) B. f. flaviceps (refer to photo), which occurs throughout lowland and lower montane, and
(ii) B. f. baluensis. lower montane & montane form has banded tail (lower body) is decorated with black and white bands found only in Borneo.
Diet: Feed primarily on snakes and opportunistically feed on rodents, frogs, and other smaller reptiles (skink, gecko, lizards).
Distribution: Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malay Peninsula (and Borneo) and Indonesia.
Effect of snakebite: Krait venom appears to function primarily as a neurotoxin, preventing communication across neuromuscular synapses, causing paralysis and death by asphyxiation because the victims can no longer breathe on their own
Behavior: Nocturnal and partially aquatic. During daytime, RHK is sluggish, lethargic, and extremely inoffensive however during night time, RHK are normally active (hunting mode) hence quite dangerous.

Indian Russell's viper, Daboia. russelii
The single species, D. russelii, is found in Asia throughout the Indian subcontinent, much of Southeast Asia, southern China and Taiwan. The species was named in honor of Patrick Russell (1726–1805), a Scottish herpetologist who first described many of India's snakes.
Apart from being a member of the big four snakes in India, Daboia is also one of the species responsible for causing the most snakebite incidents and deaths among all venomous snakes on account of many factors, such as their wide distribution, generally aggressive demeanor, and frequent occurrence in highly populated areas.

A slowly changing light on the trees and the house. The installation is inspired by Orpheus and Eurydice, a tragic love story from Greek mythology. When Eurydice died from a snakebite, Orpheus descended into the underworld of Hades, to recover his lost wife.
It is one of the temporary light installations during the event "Lights in Alingsås 2024" – the theme of the year is "The Magical World of Mythology".
Alingsås Municipality organises the event Lights in Alingsås every autumn. Since 2000 the municipality has worked with the PLDA (Professional Lighting Designers´ Association). Every year in september/october leading international lighting designers come to Alingsås to hold a week´s workshop with participants from all over the world. Together they light a number of buildings and locations around the town centre. Around 70,000 people come every year to see the designs during the month-long event.

The saw-scaled viper (SSV) (Echis carinatus) is considered to be a highly venomous snake in Sri Lanka despite any published clinical justification. Being a rarity, the clinical profile of SSV bites is not well established in Sri Lanka. In a medical study, a samples of 48 (N=48) SSV bites cases from the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, the majority (65%) of victims had evidence of local envenoming at the site of the bite; however, 29% showed spontaneous bleeding and 71% had coagulopathy. There were no deaths in the series.
It is the smallest member of the big four snakes that are responsible for causing the most snakebite cases and deaths, due to various factors including their frequent occurrence in highly populated regions, and their inconspicuous nature.
The size of E. carinatus ranges between 38 and 80 cm (15 and 31 in) in total length (body + tail), but usually no more than 60 cm (24 in).

Garuda is a large mythical bird or bird-like creature that appears in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology. He carries the Hindu god Vishnu on his back.
He has a human torso and arms, with wIngs, legs and clawed feet of a bird. He is depicted either with the head of a bird, or human head with beak. His wings are so large they darken the sky and flapping wings can cause hurricanes.
Garuda attacks snakelike Nagas and in some stories wears Nagas as jewelry.
Hindus believe he can protect people against snakes, snakebites and other poisons.

just us two (not a "tour"), our backpacks and sense of adventure.
we have been in burma before, but this time we spent more time in this beautiful country.
we had an amazing time on our trip.

EXPLANATION OF THIS PIECE:
in burma there is the belief among boys and men (and their families) that a tattoo will prevent death from snake bites or being shot by a gun. the tattoo is often the burmese alphabet (in some form).
we met a man whose mother tattooed him when he was a young boy. he was subsequently bitten by a snake...and did not die. he attributes this to the protection of the tattoo. he has never been shot by a gun, although he has ventured into some dangerous areas in burma.

Like all vipers, it is venomous. It is considered a leading cause of snakebite within its range.
The redback spider (Latrodectus hasseltii) is a species of highly venomous spider believed to originate in the South Australian or adjacent Western Australian deserts, but now found throughout Australia, Southeast Asia and New Zealand, with colonies elsewhere outside Australia.
It is a member of the cosmopolitan genus Latrodectus, the widow spiders. The adult female is easily recognised by her spherical black body with a prominent red stripe on the upper side of her abdomen and an hourglass-shaped red/orange streak on the underside. Females usually have a body length of about 10 millimetres (0.4 in), while the male is much smaller, being only 3–4 mm (0.12–0.16 in) long.
Mainly nocturnal, the female redback lives in an untidy web in a warm sheltered location, commonly near or inside human residences. It preys on insects, spiders and small vertebrates that become ensnared in its web. It kills its prey by injecting a complex venom through its two fangs when it bites, before wrapping them in silk and sucking out the liquefied insides.
Often, it first squirts its victim with what resembles 'superglue' from its spinnerets, immobilising the prey by sticking the victim's limbs and appendages to its own body. The redback spider then trusses the victim with silk. Once its prey is restrained, it is bitten repeatedly on the head, body and leg segments and is then hauled back to the redback spider's retreat. Sometimes a potentially dangerous victim can be left to struggle for hours until it is exhausted enough to approach safely.
Male spiders and spiderlings often live on the periphery of the female spiders' web and steal leftovers. Other species of spider and parasitoid wasps prey on this species. The redback is one of few arachnids that usually display sexual cannibalism while mating.
After mating sperm is stored in the spermathecae, organs of the female reproductive tract, and can be used up to two years later to fertilise several clutches of eggs. Each clutch averages 250 eggs and is housed in a round white silken egg sac.
The redback spider has a widespread distribution in Australia, and inadvertent introductions have led to established colonies in New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Japan and greenhouses in Belgium.
The redback is one of the few spider species that can be seriously harmful to humans, and its liking for habitats in built structures has led it to being responsible for a large number of serious spider bites in Australia. Predominantly neurotoxic to vertebrates, the venom gives rise to the syndrome of latrodectism in humans; this starts with pain around the bite site, which typically becomes severe and progresses up the bitten limb and persists for over 24 hours.
Sweating in localised patches of skin occasionally occurs and is highly indicative of latrodectism. Generalised symptoms of nausea, vomiting, headache, and agitation may also occur and indicate severe envenomation. An antivenom has been available since 1956.
It was widely reported that bushwalker Jayden Burleigh died of redback spider bite in 2016. However Isbister et al. have suggested patients for whom antivenom is considered should be fully informed "there is considerable weight of evidence to suggest it is no better than placebo", and in light of a risk of anaphylaxis and serum sickness, "routine use of the antivenom is therefore not recommended".
As of the 2013 (updated 2014) edition of the Snakebite & Spiderbite Clinical Management Guidelines from NSW HEALTH (latest available in 2017), Red-back spider bites were considered not life-threatening but capable of causing severe pain and systemic symptoms that could continue for hours to days

This was my first encounter with a snake while bush-walking with the camera in Yunnan and it is quite a mesmerizingly beautiful creature. Snakes (and the potential implications of encountering snakes) had not been something I had paid much heed to here unlike in Australia where it pays to be extremely vigilant anywhere you go.
Since then, my awareness is usually more finely tuned and they are certainly present but I am sure I have been close to snakes on numerous occasions without seeing them.
This one paid me little attention and as you can see I got quite close, perhaps foolishly. Yes, these images are not zoomed or cropped. I was literally that close. The tree vipers are quite venomous with a potent haemotoxin (in hindsight) and the most common cause of snakebite in Taiwan, for example.

Well, it's called Viper's Bugloss. 'Bugloss' is from the Greek for ox-tongue; it refers to the rough, spiny leaves of our plant; 'Viper' refers to the viperiform of the ripe seeds which resemble a snake's head. Following the theory of natural resemblance, it was believed that Echium vulgare could be used an an antidote to snakebites. Mioreover, for what reason I don't know, a syrup made from this plant was thought to drive away melancholy.
Notice the two-pronged pistil, which does look like a snake's forked tongue...
Henricus (father) and Abraham (son) Munting, seventeenth-century professors of botany of the university at Groningen, both list Echium vulgare among their plants. The elder Munting is clearly particular about its color, calling it Echium vulgare fl. coeruleo; 'sky-blue', in his description, Abraham leaves out the color although he does mention the red of other Echiums... Perhaps he just didn't like blue.

Back in my hiking days, I would pass three rattlesnake dens every time I passed by Bullfrog Pond, Sulphur Springs Pond, and Mustard Field Trail leading to the acorn woodpecker families. I knew enough about rattlers and, more important, I had emergency hospital in memory dial in the car and in my cell.
Still, when I look back, eight feet is a bit close to a pit viper. On a hot day, however, even vipers need a break and would prefer to sit in a nest - like this one excavated into the wall of a trail and holding six rattlers - than come after me plus a rattler would rather give notice and rattle than waste venom on something he's not going to eat. Besides, I am known to be high in sugar and salt, and that is unhealthy for humans and snakes alike.
The western diamondback rattlesnake or Texas diamond-back (Crotalus atrox) is a venomous rattlesnake species found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is likely responsible for the majority of snakebite fatalities in northern Mexico and the greatest number of snakebites in the U.S. It lives in elevations from below sea level up to 6,500 feet (2,000 m). This species ranges throughout the southwestern United States (Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas) and northern half of Mexico. Other common names for this species include western diamond-backed rattlesnake,[3] adobe snake, Arizona diamond rattlesnake, coon tail, desert diamond-back, desert diamond rattlesnake, fierce rattlesnake, spitting rattlesnake, buzz tail, Texan rattlesnake, Texas diamond-back, and Texas rattler.
Adults grow to four feet and are rather "stubby." The greatest number of buttons on the rattle is eight to ten. And, again, the rattlesnake would prefer not to bite, and although there's no rule, but I have yet to come too close to a diamondback where I didn't get sufficient warning ... like a heart attack or BP that went from 120/60 to 220/180. There are four or five species of snakes on Mt. Diablo. The diamondback is the only viper. The Western Kingsnake is a constrictor (please do not buy Kingsnakes for pets unless you realize their value to the habitat and the responsibility for care and feeding for 20-30 years!!! (Same advice goes double for parrots. I have been to too many places where people have let their pets "loose" or, frankly, abandoned them, and they are not adapted to a natural environment. Western Diamondbacks live 15-25 years.
Well, I've already started, so here's a brief list of the snakes on Mt. Diablo: Gopher Snake, Pacific Gopher Snake to the venomous Western Rattlesnake (subspecies = Northern Pacific Rattlesnake), to the endangered Alameda Whipsnake, of which Mount Diablo is one of the last remaining safe habitats. Lizards include Western Fence Lizard, Western Skink, California Whiptail, Horned Lizard. I have never seen a whipsnake and it's looking like I never will.
P.S. It took over 20 minutes to get this shot with the tongue flicking. The tongue, btw, is purple.
Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake.
